I'm playing in a league that (in addition to normal scoring) gives RBs and WR/TEs a point for each first down they make, and QBs an extra 0.5 for each first down. I'm trying to figure out how to adjust for that within VBD and DD.

My thoughts:

RB -- give them .15 points instead of .10 points for each rushing yard (they'd pick up ~5 first downs in a 100-yard game) and an extra .33 points for each reception (one out of three catches out of the backfield would yield a first down)

WR/TE -- give them an extra .9 for each reception, figuring 9 out of 10 times they catch it they pick up a first down. Adjust TE down to .8 because they have shorter patterns in general.

QB -- give them an extra 0.5 per completion because 50% of completed passes pick up a first down.

Any feedback on these numbers or a different way to do it would be much appreciated.

Just did a quick analysis. Looks like I was spot on with the QB at .5 per completion. Based on preseason stats, that's just about perfect.

For RBs, it actually is closer to 6 first downs per 100 yards (or another .06 points per yard) and for WRs it is actually down to an average of .6-.65 points per completion. (TO was the highest and he was only at .75). I was surprised. Didn't quite get a good read on how much to do for RB completions for 1st downs, but the WR data means my .33 is too high.

Any other thoughts?

There was an article posted that talks about points per first down. Maybe it will help. Pasquino article
