The Dropoff values are calculated based on the Average Draft Position Data. For example if you pick 6th in a 12 team league, the "Spots between Picks", would be 13 in a serpentine draft (Round 1 pick 1.06 and Round 2 pick 2.07). Now if you set your Spots to Look Ahead to 13 and click update, it will calculate how many of each position will be taken in the next 13 picks. For example, it could calculate that 9 RBs, 3 WRs, and 1 QB will be taken in the next 13 picks. These are your dropoff values. It is essentially saying, that if you wait to your next pick to take a RB, 9 of them are going to be gone. Likewise 3 WRs and 1 QB are going to be gone too. So the next step is to determine how many points you will lose by waiting. Lets say that at 1.06 that you could have Edge at 330 Fantasy Points, and then if you count down 9 RBs you see that Domanick Davis is at 260 points. The Drop Value is the difference of these two (330-260) equals 70 points. It does this calculation for each position, and then recommends the player based on the highest Drop Value.
Now with that out of the way... here is how I generally use it. I leave the Auto Look Ahead box checked. When it recommends a player, a RB for example, I look at the Player Pool RB tab and see which running backs are in the same class (similar VBD numbers) of the one it is recommending. I then pick the one I like best out of this bunch. I also look at the other positions with high DVBD numbers or close to the one that is being recommended. For example if the RB DVBD number was 35 and the WR DVBD number was 30, then I'll also look at the WRs in the same class... and then pick which RB or WR I like best.
