timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (3 Viewers)

It's hard to get too serious here. I put a lot of time and effort into the England category and since then it has been very slow progress overall, so I've taken it slow with the Sex/Adultery category. If other judges had posted their scores quicker I would definitely have got off my backside and watched the remaining movies as a matter of priority.

As it is I'm watching when I can and I'm 80% through. If people didn't pick 3 hour snore fests like Dr Zhivago, then my task would have been easier.

For fight category, I'll turn that one over much quicker, but before I put in the effort I'd like a few more categories judged.

We're watching the historical people movies as fast as we can. Some are great, and some are not so hot. Since we came late to this game, it takes time.

Um, the draft is going to finish even if I have to judge all remaining cats. I'm just that way. The Rannouses are pitching in. So let's not worry about the other categories being judged. You've had over three months.

I'm doing my 2 and given the pace of the other judging I'm not going to bust a gut devoting every spare moment to doing so.

I'll get er done soon enough

OK, I've had enough of this ####.

You remaining judges have until Friday to post the exact date your results will be posted, and it needs to be within 2 weeks from now. Starting this weekend I'm going to start judging whatever's left over. I'll just start at the top of the list and work my way down. If either I don't get a post from you OR you fail to keep your promise within the two week period, your category is on the list.

My rankings may be crappy but they're better than no rankings. I intend to finish this draft and move on to the next one. No matter what, this draft WILL be done by mid August.

Multiples will be up within 2 weeks from now, sooner if anyone has seen Sunshine and can help me out.

Some, but not all, judges have spoken for their categories in the last two weeks:

- JML for Adultery/Sex Movies (60% done on Friday 6/21) and for Fight Scenes

- Aerial Assault for Dream Sequences (finished) and Courtroom Scenes

- Nick Vermeil for Multiple Performances (looking for help judging an unseen film)

- Tremendous Upside for Spies (90% finished on Saturday 6/29)

- Tiananmen Tank for Monologues (only write-ups pending as of Monday 6/24)

- Kumerica for Dramatic Actors in Comedic Roles (write-ups 60% done on Friday 6/21)

- Bobby Layne dropped Portrayal of a Real/Historical Person this past Monday. Val & Mrs. Rannous considering taking it on..

- Val Rannous picked up Gambling Scene from Scott Norwood

...

Finally, Tim declared the following categories still up for grabs:

- Rock and Roll Movie

- No Idea What This Movie is About

- "Shooting a Movie" Scene

- Portrayal of a Real/Historical Person (if the Rannouses aren't taking it)
I'm guessing this is the latest update?

I can take gambling scene (if Val doesn't have time), spies (if TUp can send me the 90% done, or from scratch if he's MIA), and portrayal of a real/historical character.

I won't promise lengthy writeups, but I have seen all the movies, and can whip together rankings semi-quickly.

I'm going to take Rock N' Roll Movies. I've seen about 80% of them and will watch the rest. I'll try and finish in the two week time frame.

Jzilla showed back up after a lengthy absence and said he could do his two cats but it may take some time. Not sure that he's been back since. I'll start putting something together, at the risk that he may show back up and still want the category. If he does I'll gladly step aside and let him have it.

I can’t promise lengthy write ups or anything fancy but will try and give my reasons and offer some semblance of objectivity.

Just a note. If this draft had been done after it released, I would have taken Man of Steel for superhero movie.

Damn I loved that show.

I have. It's an OK movie. Follows a Jewish family in Budapest from about 1890-1960s. There was always some secret treasure involved, if I recall correctly. Fiennes plays the male from each of 3 generations- I know he is a champion fencer at one point, subjected to anti-Semitism. (The scenes right before World War II in which the family, knowing they are doomed but still dressed to the nines for dinner, are especially powerful.) Later he plays a Communist working for the Russians. He's always great, but the movie, while having an epic feel, lacks empathy.

Don't know it that helps...

Thanks, guys. So long as it's posted within the next two weeks, that would be great.

Dear Mr Bossy Boots,

I intend to have started posting my rankings by just before the 2 weeks from the date of your post for both Fight Scene and Sex/Adultery.

I will alternate the topics ie 1 point for Fight, then 1 point for Sex/Adultery, then 2 points for Fight Scene, then 2 points for Sex/Adultery

I will then strangle a chicken.

Let me know if any of these are inaccurate. I plan on going through the thread for selection motivation and scenes selected, so if you haven't already described what you wanted, now would be a good time.

charvik, I would have PMed you but I'm getting the error where it says you can't receive messages. Any, following was my message...

I couldn't find the scene I wanted from 'Let it Ride' on youtube -- it's the final scene when he wins big. I know that that one scene doesn't necessarily have him making the bet (at least from memory) but the result of the bet is what I'd say is the definition of "having a good day". I hope you at least have seen the movie, and I apologize for not being able to find the scene on youtube (or anywhere else) -- thanks for judging.

Thanks, I cleared out PMs now... I guess the board upgrade messed that up as I had 50+ conversation marked as deleted (but not removed).I'm very familiar with the scene, and own the movie as well, so no problems.

I'm pretty sure the Rannous' have stated that they have already started viewing the movies they haven't seen in "real/historical person".

I don't care who ends up judging it - but just giving you a head's up before you put too much work into it.

Thanks, appreciate it!

Tup said he was 90% done with spies as well, so starting with gambling scene unless I hear from Val that he still wants it.

Ok. Here we go on Multiple Performances. There were quite a few I hadn't seen and Tim on Dr. Octopus helped me out with two of them. Here is the criteria.

The selections in category covered a wide range of genres and time periods as well as number of characters so I had to apply science to the rankings. I ranked each movie from 1-10 in 4 categories and weighted the categories as follows:

Number of characters played: 10%

Movie quality (an average of my personal feelings and Rotten Tomatoes score): 25%

Quality of performances: 40%

Relevance of multiple characters to plot: 25%

Away we go.....

Michael J. Fox, Back to the Future Part 2

Look, I like this movie ok and I love Michael J. Fox but no one would ever confuse him for a character actor. When you cast him in a role, you do it because playing Michael J. Fox is enough. Putting a funny jacket on a guy and having him talk in a high voice is no way to create a character. Playing his own daughter is laughable. It was completely unnecessary for him to play these additional characters.

3 Characters, 6.7 movie rating, 1 on performance, 4 on relevance to plot

Total score 3.38

1 point

Hillary Duff, The Lizzie McGuire Movie

I had to fast forward. Not a good movie and the acting is woof.

2 Characters, 4.5 movie rating, 4 on performance, 7 for relevance to plot

Total score 4.68

2 points

Richard Pryor, Which Way is Up

Before I watched this I thought it might score higher since I love Pryor. This movie is not good. There could have been something here but it’s just kind of a mess.

3 Characters, 3 movie rating, 5 on performance, 7 on relevance

Total score 4.8

3 points

Tom Hanks, Polar Express

One of my most hated animated movies ever. The motion capture is creepy as all get out. The performances here are meh and suffer from being just voice work (Yes, I realize he did the motion capture. Doesn’t help).

6 characters, 4.8 movie rating, 5 on performances, 6 on relevance to plot.

Total score 5.3

4 points

Mike Meyers, So I Married an Axe Murder.

My pick and kind of a punt. Love this movie and the performance. It suffers in the category for the number of characters played and the relevance to plot.

2 Characters, 6 movie rating, 8 performance, 4 relevance to plot.

Jack Lemmon, The Great Race

Not two of Jack’s better roles. He only plays the two characters and it isn’t really necessary to do so. The movie is entertaining enough and Natalie Wood is smoking here. Still it a low scorer against the remaining selections.

2 Characters, 7.35 movie rating, 7 on performance and 6 on relevance.

Total score 6.34

6 points

Buster Keaton, Playhouse

I wasn’t familiar with this Keaton but he is great as usual. However it’s kind of two movies in one short with all of the multiple characters showing up in an opening dream. The technical aspect for the era is more impressive than the actual performance and when the film moves past the multiples, Keaton is better.

14 Characters (could have been more, but I grouped them where appropriate), 6 movie rating, 7 performance, 3 relevance.

Total score 6.45

7 points

Eddie Murphy, The Nutty Professor

Good performances in a bad movie and a handful of unnecessary characters at the family dinner table. The only two characters that are necessary are really two sides of the same person. Still, Murphy is great but this is the lower of his two selections.

7 Characters, 5.75 movie rating, 8 performance, 5 relevance.

Total score: 6.59

8 points

Armie Hammer, The Social Network

Hammer does an okay job with important but rarely seen characters in a pretty good movie. But can anyone honestly tell me which brother is which? Is that the point? These roles could have been played by anybody, or any actual twins.

2 Characters, 8.3 movie rating, 6 on Performance, 8 relevance

Total score: 6.68

9 points

Halle Berry, Cloud Atlas

Special guest judging. I haven’t seen it though I have read the book. I can’t imagine it making a good movie.

7 Characters, 6.4 movie rating, 6 performance, 8 relevance

Total score 6.7

10 points

Kenneth Branagh, Dead Again

I’ve never been a fan of this movie. I’ve always felt it was an over the top (which is saying something) rip off of a Brian DePalma film. Branagh overacts here in my opinion brings it down.

2 Characters, 7.1 movie rating, 6 performance, 10 relevance.

Total score 6.88

11 points

Ed Norton, Leaves of Grass

Once again a good performance in a pretty forgettable movie. On the quality of Norton’s performance, the selection ranks the highest of the middling picks in the category. The films and performances above it are just so much better.

2 characters, 5.55 movie ranking, 7 performance, 10 relevance.

Total score 6.89

12 points

Mel Brooks, History of the World Part 1

So many good lines and scenes in a classic comedy. Mel may not be the most gifted character creator on the list but he is consistently hilarious.

5 Characters, 7.1 movie rating, 7 performance, 8 relevance

Total Score 7.08

13 Points

Tony Randal, 7 Faces of Dr. Lao

This was on TV again last night. It’s a very strange but entertaining film. Randal is great creating a wide range of wild characters, even if it is borderline racist. I like it.

8 Characters, 8.5 movie rating, 7 performance, 6 relevance

Total Score 7.23

14 points

Eddie Murphy, Coming to America

Some of the funniest performances out of Murphy in my opinion. I will watch this movie anytime it is on. It suffers from the relevance of his characters but is boosted by his character creation.

4 characters, 7.9 movie rating, 9 performance, 5 relevance

Total Score 7.23 (tie with Tony Randal, break goes to my preferred film)

This is my Coming To America pick?
Yes, sorry about that. Updated now.

Hillary Duff, The Lizzie McGuire Movie

I had to fast forward. Not a good movie and the acting is woof.

2 Characters, 4.5 movie rating, 4 on performance, 7 for relevance to plot

2 points
One more point than I was anticipating. :pickle:

Ralph Fiennes, Sunshine

Another guest ranking, I was unable to see this one.

3 Characters, 6.7 movie ranking, 8 performance and 10 relevance.

Total score 7.68

16 Points

From here on out I think all of the picks and rankings are obvious except for 1... which was a pleasant surprise.

Jeremy Irons, Dead Ringers

Irons is terrific as usual in this creepy flick. I don’t particular care for the movie but the Rotten Tomatoes average gives it a boost. Hard to deny the quality of the performance.

2 Characters, 7.15 movie rating, 8 performance, 10 relevance

Total Score: 7.69

17 points

Mike Meyers, Austin Powers

Meyers best film and characters. Not much more to say.

2 characters, 7.5 movie rating, 8 performance, 10 relevance

Total score 7.78

18 Points

Peter Sellers, The Mouse that Roared

The lesser known Sellers multiple. I didn’t think I had seen it until I started watching it and it all came back to me. It’s a great premise and I enjoyed it the second time around. Sellers does not slip into these characters as easily as his other selection in the category.

3 Characters, 8.95 Movie ranking, 7 performance, 10 relevance

Total score 7.84

19 points

Alec Guinness, Kind Hearts and Coronets

Obi Wan creates several characters pretty flawlessly in this one. He plays different genders (way better than Michael J fox) and several different generations. His makeup, posture and voice work all help you forget it’s the same actor.

8 Characters, 9 movie rating, 7 performance, 9 relevance

Total score 8.10

20 points

Lee Marvin, Cat Ballou

A classic western comedy and Marvin is great. Just two characters but they are pretty unforgettable. He won an academy award and it was well deserved. The Man who Shot Liberty Valence is probably the only film of his I like better.

2 Characters, 9 movie rating, 8 performance, 10 relevance

Total score 8.15

21 points

John Cleese, Monty Python and the Holy Grail

I figured this pick for number 2 until I did the math. I gave Cleese a slight nick on relevance because some of the characters are fringe. But there are few comedic actors like Cleese and the Holy Grail is my favorite of the Python films.

6 Characters, 9.75 movie rating, 9 performance, 8 relevance

Total score 8.64

22 points

Sam Rockwell, Moon

This was by far the best film in the category that I hadn’t seen. Great movie and Rockwell knocks it out of the park. Playing versions of the same character, he perfectly defines each at differing stages of their mission. He also receives bonus performance points for playing flawlessly against himself through most of the film. Technically I could have counted more characters for him, but 2 I think is the appropriate accurate number. Great pick.

2 Characters, 9 movie rating, 10 performance, 10 relevance.

Total score 8.95

23 points

Nicholas Cage, Adaptation

Cage develops two very different and compelling characters and plays well off of himself. This is my favorite Kaufman movie and it’s all because of Cage.

2 Characters, 9.05 movie rating, 10 performance, 10 relevance

Total score 8.96

24 points

Peter Sellers, Dr. Strangelove: or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Clearly the best multiple performance film of all time. There are so many great lines and scenes. Sellers is great, the film is an all time great and the characters are some of the best ever in film.

3 Characters, 10 movie ranking, 10 performance, 10 relevance.

Total score 9.3

25 points

Time Kibitzer, Peter Sellers, Dr. Strangelove - 25 points

Tiannamen Tank, Nicholas Cage, Adaptation - 24 points

Kumerica, Sam Rockwell, Moon – 23 points

jwb, John Cleese, Monty Python and the Holy Grail – 22 points

higgins, Lee Marvin, Cat Ballou – 21 points

Mrs. Rannous, Alec Guinness, Kind Hearts and Coronets – 20 points

Joffer, Peter Sellers, The mouse that Roared – 19 points

Aerial Assault, Mike Meyers, Austin Powers - 18 points

timschochet, Jeremy Irons, Dead Ringers - 17 points

krista4, Ralph Fiennes, Sunshine – 16 points

Andy Dufresne, Eddie Murphy, Coming to America – 15 points

Val Rannous, Tony Randall, 7 Faces of Dr. Lao -14 points

Mister CIA Mel Brooks, History of the World Part 1 -13 points

AcerFC, Ed Norton, Leaves of Grass – 12 points

Tremendous Upside, Kenneth Branagh, Dead Again – 11 points

Doug B, Halle Berry, Cloud Atlas – 10 points

Karma Police, Armie Hammer, The Social Network – 9 points

John Maddens Lunchbox, Eddie Murphy, The Nutty Professor – 8 points

Bobby Layne, Buster Keaton, Playhouse – 7 points

rikishiboy Jack Lemmon, The Great Race – 6 points

Nick Vermeil, Mike Meyers, So I married an Axe murder 5

Usual 21, Tom Hanks, The Polar Express – 4 points

hooter311, Richard Pryor, Which Way is Up? – 3 points

Dr. Octopus, Hillary Duff, The Lizzie McGuire Movie – 2 points

tish155, Michael J. Fox, Back to the Future 2 – 1 point

This one will knock me out of the lead, at least for a little while.

gambling scene - The Gambler
I don't know which scene was selected, and when browsing through the thread yesterday, this one didn't stand out enough for me to register. Could you please provide a clip?ETA: never mind, found the post:

The Gambler - Blackjack Scene

(Starts at 4:43)

Underrated James Caan performance here
I am guessing this was assigned to him, as he was MIA at the end of the draft.

Tup said he was 90% done with spies as well, so starting with gambling scene unless I hear from Val that he still wants it.
Val is most of the way through the gambling scenes. We are planning on finishing with historical persons this weekend.

FIngers crossed.

 OK. I can post gambling tonight, as I am done with the rankings already, but since Val wants to keep it, I'll just discard. I'll skip doing historical persons too.

Cool, will post my rankings within 15 minutes, I just need to get back to my desk.

Gambling scene:

Gambling Scene

- Needs to fit in with the movie and not be superfluous

- Needs to make sense (A bad gambling scene that doesn't make sense can ruin a movie

if you're a REAL gambler). If a movie isn't meant to make sense as a whole, then I

might give it a pass - as per the first criteria, context is important.

- Intensity and high sense of risk/reward is a plus
I have attempted to follow the original criteria, and also didn't view who picked what before judging.
