FFA Top 200 Horror Movies of All Time: #1 - Alien (9 Viewers)

Hot take: I think Train to Busan is in the running for best zombie movie ever made.
That is a hot take. I literally saw it for the first time last month.

I enjoyed it. But not in the same league as some of my highly ranked ones.
Its the only zombie movie my wife has ever said she enjoyed , which is saying something because ive had her watch all the classics with me even tho shes not a fan of the genre

#21 - Midsommar

Several friends travel to Sweden to study as anthropologists a summer festival that is held every ninety years in the remote hometown of one of them. What begins as a dream vacation in a place where the sun never sets, gradually turns into a dark nightmare as the mysterious inhabitants invite them to participate in their disturbing festive activities.

This is a brilliant horror movie in every way.

I own the A24 Deluxe 4K Directors Cut. Wow. Such amazing cinematography. The characters are all believable.

It is a total mind**** from start to finish. The horror of all of it is intense and get’s worse and worse as the festival moves on. The dread is just overwhelming.

Easily one of the best horror movies in the last 15 years.

#20 - Let the Right One In

Set in 1982 in the suburb of Blackeberg, Stockholm, twelve-year-old Oskar is a lonely outsider, bullied at school by his classmates; at home, Oskar dreams of revenge against a trio of bullies. He befriends his twelve-year-old, next-door neighbor Eli, who only appears at night in the snow-covered playground outside their building.

Love this movie. Oskar and Eli have great chemistry together with each getting something from their current friendship and from what is bound to be their co-dependent relationship for years to come. The pool scene was fabulous! I saw the American remake which is ok but was not aware there is also a series from 2022. Might check that out.

#24 - It Follows

When carefree teenager Jay sleeps with her older boyfriend for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay's friends don't believe her seemingly paranoid ravings, until they too begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her defend herself.

I really like this flick. First of all I love the 80’s vibe all over this movie with the John Carpenteresque music. So cool. Yet we know it is taking place in the modern day with that little shell text thingie......or is it?

The concept is great. And man there are some superbly creepy moments in this movie!!!!

I know I did not rank it very high......but hey it was in my top 75.
Smile was better and very similar to It Follows IMO
Smile was solid......I just gravitated a lot more to It Follows for style reasons.

80’s horror vibe which is my wheel house.
Love the characters a lot more.

Just a middle class/working class feel to all of it vs the slick Smile.

I love seeing this because not only is this movie deserving of this ranking, but I specifically asked people to rank movies they liked the best and not based on what movie "should be" ranked based on popular opinion or random IMDB lists. Our top movies on the list have a great mix of gems like this and "chalk".

I loved the constant feel of dread and the eerie soundtrack , the camera angles were very effective , and of course the premise , like i said its got that same vibe as It Follows . I heard they are making an It Follows 2 , looking forward to it.

Yup. I ranked it according to my own level of enjoyment versus the others on my list and how it fit the genre, and it had nothing to do with any other outside ranking list. A Mid-50s ranking is where it deserves to be. Seems a few others feel the same way.

Never really liked Scream. I've said before that most of the time when established, known actors are cast in a horror movie, it really takes the believability out of it for me and this movie is the poster child for that. I see this as a a slasher with Monica from Friends, Shaggy from the Scooby Doo movies, and the girl from E.T.

I know that there is technically a brilliant slasher film here. The casting just ruins it for me and I never have the urge to rewatch.

Really like this film, but at #20? That’s nuts.
I love seeing this because not only is this movie deserving of this ranking, but I specifically asked people to rank movies they liked the best and not based on what movie "should be" ranked based on popular opinion or random IMDB lists. Our top movies on the list have a great mix of gems like this and "chalk".
I just watched the original on Tubi , pretty good but the remake was better.
Ugh, strong disagree here. Did you watch a terrible English dub or something?
No i read the subtitles . It had enough good scenes to make it interesting .
I think the hardest thing about watching it in Swedish - or any movie in Swedish, for that matter - is not thinking of this guy.

It really is a difficult language to listen to.

That is criminally low- shocked really. As one of the few millenials here, I have to ride for our movie here. Deserved top 10.

Never really liked Scream. I've said before that most of the time when established, known actors are cast in a horror movie, it really takes the believability out of it for me and this movie is the poster child for that. I see this as a a slasher with Monica from Friends, Shaggy from the Scooby Doo movies, and the girl from E.T

I know you posted this before but at the time of the movie they weren't those people so it shouldn't have felt that way. Upon rewatch years later I can understand but originally they weren't known for those characters (except for Drew but she was barely in it). Friends started in 1994 and Scooby Doo wasn't until 2002 while Scream was 1996. So I guess maybe a little Monica but I don't think she was truly Monica yet.

Also I don't get why a known actor ruins a horror movie but not a comedy or drama or action, etc.

It's more a thing of how it's aged for me. It's like a relic of bad 90s actors. Also, forget about Scooby Doo, Matthew Lillard was just flat out annoying in this.

I know it's a very specific thing for me. I think for horror, a certain level of realism (within the movie's universe) is expected for it to scare me. That gets tossed out the window with an established actor playing a role, especially one well known for another role. The Ring suffers from this too (although Naomi Watts ain't bad to look at).

I think it also depends on the actor a bit.

I find that level of actor perfect for what the movie was doing. It's making a slasher while satirizing the slashers. Better actors than you find in a Jason movie but it's not a bunch of Oscar winners either. And I think Lillard is great in it. The only role he's ever properly filled. He is annoying in general but it works here IMO- maybe just because it's the first time we get his schitck. I don't know how old you are but age always plays a role here. Seeing this freshman year of HS was just the perfect age. This is the franchise for most millenials. We grew up on video store slasher rentals from the 80s and so a smart, funny, scary, clever and self aware spin on it was perfect for our generation.

Interesting. I find almost no horror movies actually scary and I tend to not actually like the ones that are truly scary. The scariest movies actually probably aren't horror, they are things like Star 80.

It’s also the reason I like found footage as much as I do. However flawed a lot of these movies are, they all seem incredibly real. It’s why Blair witch was so amazing with its marketing campaign. It made you think the horror was real.

How do you take away that sense of realism? Cast someone from Friends in a role.

I'd watch that just to see Ross gutted

haha. Ross is another example of this! Remember Band of Brothers?

Great mini-series. Worst casting in the history of film and TV.

Loved this movie, the environment, the actors, everything about it. The US remake was decent but the cheesy CGI ruined it, imo.

I agree.

I think if I was like 16, instead of 22 when Scream came out, I would have liked it more. I didn't hate it but not near my Top 75

Drew Barrymore was the most famous person in the movie and got top billing, but - whoa - she died 15 minutes in. Another movie that better not be on this list, Deep Blue Sea did a similar thing with Samuel L. Jackson (forgive the lack of spoiler tags but there are 25+ year old movies). Whatever predictability there is/was in casting a big name was totally subverted as it turned out.

Yeah, but . . . the scene with Drew Barrymore is legitimately good. It's an iconic scene that people still remember a whole generation later. I know it's mainly a comedy, but it's firmly rooted horror and doubles as good example of 90s po-mo irony.

I wasn't criticizing the scene or her lack of screen time. Her presence in the film not only enhanced it but subverted the supposed negatives of casting a big star in a horror film. The only logical explanation for not wanting a star in a horror is that it means we know their character will survive until the end, and Scream flies in the face of that, not only shocking the audience but planting seeds of doubt the next time the viewer sees a star in a horror film. Greatness that, intentionally or not, actually benefits the genre as a whole.
