That is strange. Probably worth an uninstall /reinstall. When I click on settings on the app then backup device folders, it states that my "camera" folder is automatically backed up.

I can't tell if you have Google Photos installed or are only using the Google backup option in the settings menu.  If you do not have Google Photos installed, I recommend that you install and use it.  It will back up all of your photos at a large setting to make sure that you always have a copy...

Best photography book I read is Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson. Explains the triad of aperture, shutter speed, and iso to get the desired exposure and uses photos to demonstrate changing these settings.
