For a show that people are not mentioning I would say that Gomorrah is my favorite organized crime type series I've seen in the last few years.

It's not exactly a bowl full of laughs and I'd not watch without subtitles and no dubbing but really struck out to me as a show that I did not know anyone talking about that was a very pleasant surprise to me.

Also was a big fan of Severance and can't wait for Season 2 to finally arrive. A tad slow paced but the concept is so interesting and it picks up.

These shows are not quite under the radar but just struck out to me as good shows that a lot of people I know never watched.

A few of us talked about Gomorrah.. I think Gianmarco was a big fan. I really liked the 1st season until the uncle escaped. Felt it got silly from there.

Oh, yeah, great call here. Awesome season one.

A few more I would add:

Deadwood
Justified
Narcos
Eastbound and down
The Punisher
Californication
Liked the first two. Didn’t like the third because of the Spanish and having to use subtitles, never seen the last three.

What are y’all’s TOP/Best series available now, that you’d recommend? Like, your can’t miss zOMG yes go watch it!!!1! This can be older like The Wire, or something current/current-ish.

Thought it’d be cool/helpful for those of us that aren’t as well versed in this thread. Cuz a lot of the recent ones are ‘fine’ it seems….

TIA
Deadwood is top of the list if you haven't seen it.

Should I start Suits? My 20 year old daughter loves it and says I would too.
Definitely should watch it. It's very entertaining and it's an easy watch.
Just please don't ever expect any lawyer to do anything like they do in this show ever.

I ****ing hate this show for this reason.
I object!
Strenuously?
I approve of A Few Good Men. Second best criminal lawyer movie ever. The scene where he got him six months and Dawson doesn’t care is very realistic and I’ve wanted to Cruise’s reaction so many times…
I know you've probably objected to stuff in the courtroom before, but have you ever strenuously objected?

Ozark. Bateman alone is worth it.
Ozark has some pretty awesome performances and it's one of the very few shows I've seen that does "let's flip the genders" well, but my wife and I are currently re-watching it and I can't get over how gonzo the plot is. How does the boy get to be an expert in money laundering? How do the Birds make any of these connections that allow them to get a casino up and running? How does the FBI not notice a huge poppy field that would be easily-observable from the air? Why does the cartel water-board everybody routinely? The writers really expect that audience to let a lot of things slide, and I think that only works because of how good Bateman, Julia Garner, and Charlie Tahan are IMO.

It's chock full o' goofiness. Still fun and well done.
And yeah.. the acting is great. Nobody likes the character, so nobody likes the performance - but Laura Linney is amazing in this.

Ozark was a major disappointment for me after hearing all the hype on the internets. The writers took way too many liberties but I did find it unintentionally funny at times just because of the ridiculous plot points. Apples and Oranges when comparing it to a brilliant show like Breaking Bad/BCS.

Yeah, but it has Ruth. She's worth watching even if the story is kind of out-there.

BCS is a great comparison point. That show took its time and let the story develop nice and slowly. Ozark, by way of contrast, veers from one crisis point to another from the first five minutes of S1E1 all the way through to the end, without ever taking more than 30 seconds to breathe. There is no Fly in this series, but it's also kind of exhausting when they try to make every episode be Ozymandius. (I know those are BB and not BCS, but you know what I mean).

I didn’t like the way Better Call Saul ended. As for Ozark, I liked the ending minus one exception. I won’t spoil anything.

I know this is unpopular, but I disliked the endings to both BB and BCS. BB should have ended with Ozymandius, or maybe with Walt waiting for death to claim him in NH. BCS should have ended after Lalo was defeated, or maybe with one brief epilogue episode to wrap up some loose ends. Both got too self-indulgent at the very end IMO.

I wouldn't disagree that both BB and BCS marched on a little longer than they probably should have and the endings weren't perfect but there were so many seasons of brilliance compared to a bunch of meh in Ozark. The actors could only make up for so much. The cartels and bad guys in Ozark almost felt cartoonish. Can't say the same about BB/BCS.

Finished the available season of Andor. It was good, not great. The prison episodes really dragged. Also a decent amount of suspension of critical thinking is required to get past some of the things that went on (I know it's Star Wars, but still). Some pretty good acting in this one. I think I enjoyed Skaarsgard the most. Definitely a cut above the last season of The Mandalorian and the first season of Ahsoka.

I had to flip the subtitles on and rewind the first time Luthen addressed his assistant in the gift shop by name - sounded like Leia, but was actually Kleya. There are some physical similarities there, but it didn't make sense timeline wise. Still, they really had to make her look somewhat like Leia and give her a name that close?

No, but I have seen some brand new lawyer, much like the character in the movie, do so (and basically get laughed at).

I've been trying to obtain a strip club by stealing its paper deed ever since and haven't had any luck.

Oh my.

Warrior just dropped on Netflix. Gonna give it a few days then I'm gonna fully commit. Let's roll
Couldn't sleep so I jammed through 3 episodes tonight of Warrior. Great start to a series. Got some decent foundational characters and I love the social dynamic of the battling groups. I have a quick trigger finger on movies and TV shows. I'll dump either in 10 minutes if I project no end game enjoyment. I'll definitely keep watching this. For now. Ha ha

I had the sense that Bateman intended the show to be a one-off or maybe two seasons at most, but it caught on and he was probably offered a crapload of money to keep it going.

The show started so fast and was so dense with plot that it could sustain for a dozen or twenty episodes. After that, it starts to wear thin and become repetitive.

Darlene and her shotgun was shocking the first time she used it. The third and fourth time, not so much.

I'm watching Doom Patrol (Max). I'm a little more than a season in and it's pretty fun.
It's a pretty fun show but falls way off in the later seasons, so much so that we never finished it.
i feel like this show was a victim of the world changing for me i watched the first few seasons post-heart attack during the covid world shutdown when i could give them the time they deserved and enjoyed them a lot but then the world started spinning again and i got busy and watched the last two seasons on the go never giving them time and didnt enjoy them as much thats just how it was for me anyhow still think it is a good show with great characters take that to the bank bromigos

My social media feed is having its annual slugfest over Starship Troopers, which always provides a great excuse to go back and give that one yet another rewatch. Except it's one of those shows that has somehow fallen off all the streaming platforms. It seemed like it was everywhere a few years ago, and not it's just gone. (I should just open up my wallet and pay for it on Amazon, but as soon as I do that it'll be right back on Prime Video).

If I were king for a day, I would change our IP law to make it so that copyrights all expire after, say, 30 years. Starship Troopers was released in 1997, so it would be three short years away from the public domain. Everyone involved in this movie is now old -- they made their money off of it. At some point, individual works of media need to be considered part of our shared culture and should be available to anybody who wants to broadcast them, and 30 years seems about right to me.
