its a little weird to defend the Ayatollah and the mullahs. if you don't like brutal dictators you're not exactly defending an innocent bunch.Someone comes here. They engineer a coup and put a brutal dictator in charge. They create one of the most brutal secret police organizations in the world. That group goes on to torture and murder thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of our citizens. They keep this murderous doosh in power for decades. What are you saying about them?
Not defending the Ayatollah. The Iranian people have been given real good reasons to hate us by us. The leadership uses that to their political advantage. We have a generation still living with survivors of torture, still mourning their dead, and still wondering what happened to the disappeared. And we act surprised when they don't like us.its a little weird to defend the Ayatollah and the mullahs. if you don't like brutal dictators you're not exactly defending an innocent bunch.Someone comes here. All of this is true. It's also true that, during the years of the Shah's reign, we spent hundreds of millions of dollars in Iran trying to help the government fight illiteracy, child hunger, disease, poverty, mistreatment of women. We poured millions into their infrastructure and helped cities like Tehran and Tabriz become modernized, benefiting the entire population. Does any of this make up for the bad stuff that was done as a result of our political intrigues? Maybe not. But I get a little tired of the constant refrain by progressives in this country about how terrible and evil we've been. It's simplistic and inaccurate.Someone comes here. Like Trump he didn't like to go off message. And if one studies the actual writings and speeches of the Ayatollah Khomeini, who led the revolution, the issues that NC Commish mentioned have absolutely nothing to do with his hatred of America. Rather, he hated the Shah being influenced by western culture to introduce the modernization of Iranian society, most importantly rights for women and the removal of the Mullahs (priests) from civic authority in the towns and villages. He feared that Iran would become a secular society and for that he blamed America.
Yes he did, but that of course involved the murder of perhaps 20 million people. We managed to help modernize Iran without paying such a price. But I know you knew that.Stalin modernized Russia. All of this is true. I still haven't detected the humorous part but if that was your intent I'll back out.Great. I was hoping this humorous post could be turned into a political debate.
No way we could have seen that coming.Great. I was hoping this humorous post could be turned into a political debate.
they are focus grouping, "We Hope America Breaks Its Leg", but the initial feedback is lukewarm at best.I view it as a good thing that he's going for a softer, gentler "Death to America".
