#156 - Donnie Darko

Would have been in my top 30 if I had considered it horror, but in the end left it off my list, especially after Scoresman TOLD ME TO.
Whoa

Actually only half true. I sent him a list of 10 movies that I wasn't sure about. He did say he wouldn't nix any of them but I asked which ones he thought were borderline, he responded with 5. I left 4 off my list.

I still think it’s borderline but correct I don’t think I vetoed any of the ones you sent me.

Correct, you didn't veto any. You just heavily influenced what was in my final list.

This was cool because it was a "Zoom" movie that came out really fast after COVID started and it was a new thing, but I don't think I'd have it in my top 100. I can think of a few movies that do the webcam found footage style much better.

This one just snuck into my top 75. I had a handful of movies that could have easily been my 74th movie, but had to go with Host. It came out in a time where the zoom aspect hit even harder, grounded the movie, and made it feel more real. Would it be on my list if I hadn’t watched it when I did under lockdown? Probably not, but it triggers my COVID ptsd, and that makes it a scary flick.

Early Kathryn Bigelow. Saw this on video when I was in high school. I was the guy in college that was breaking out near dark to show people in my dorm when they were all agog about Dazed and Confused or Clerks.

I'll probably give Host a shot but Near Dark definitely makes the list for this October. Never heard of that one, looks good.

It is great…..so underrated it’s not even funny…….Bill Paxton is so good in this as is Lance Hendrixson.

Just a gloomy, grimy vampire romp.

The Medium is a semi-mockumentary style movie from Thailand about a documentary crew making a film about shamans. This is a possession movie but what makes this one stand out is that it tells a possession story from a non-Christian POV.

If you thought Christian exorcisms were crazy, well you ain't seen mothing yet. This isn't a couple of priests yelling and sprinkling holy water on someone. Exorcisms in this part of the world apparently involve dozens of people, explosions, fireballs, sacrificing of farm animals and more crazy ****. It's over the top for sure, but is one of the best exorcisms I've seen on film, period. It had me shook and exhausted at the end of it.

And the leadup to it is great too. The film is a bit long-ish at just over two hours. Some people say it's a bit too long, but I feel it uses the extra time to flesh out the characters and establish the folklore in the beginning making the payoffs that much better. I feel exorcism style movies need to do this more than other subgenres. The movie uses the trope of placing cameras in a house to detect activity and it's one of the creepiest and effective uses of this trope I've seen even though it does raise the question of whether they have door locks in Thailand.

I have this ranked as high as I do because possession and found footage might be my two favorite subgenres. This might be the best melding of the two I've seen.

I need to rewatch Speak No Evil. I remember it being really effective at what it did.
Actually a little bummed I forgot it because it would have been solidly in the middle. Also, there's an American version being made with James McAvoy. I'm a sucker for his acting so will for sure check it out

As someone mentioned, I think it might be a good idea once we’re done for anyone who wants to to modify their lists with forgotten movies and maybe even discovered movies and see how it changes the top 200. Not to do another slow reveal countdown, but maybe have a modified list of the “final” 200 in the google doc.

5 might seem high, but this movie put me in the shoes of the main character for a scene (in the car, of course) in a way that never happens to me. I almost felt the way the character did for the rest of the movie.
