*** Official Jaguars Thread - Team Putting #DTWD to The Test *** (2 Viewers)

Least surprising aspect of this announcement is that PFT has totally ignored it (since it puts a wet blanket on their Jags to London/LA/STL story-lines) and the only ESPN mention is a little blog entry from their Jaguars beat reporter(DiRocco),

Doesn't fit their negative agenda.

Jags signed John Idzik. His time in Seattle and NY showed he is more of a cap guy than a personnel guy. Given the fact that the Jags need to spend a bunch of cash in next 2 years to hit 89%, it is probably a better hire than would appear at first blush. Figure Caldwell and young Polian will handle the actual personnel decisions and Idzik to manipulate cap/contracts.

I know some are all riled up about this hire, but I like it. He's a cap guy; that's what he's qualified to do.

Ian Rapoport says Jermey parnell contract will 5 yr 32 Mil. So there's your starting RT.

If the Julius Thomas rumors are true, there's your difference maker on offense.

Odrick provides DL flexibility and insurance with guys coming back form injury.

Needs still to be addressed:

Free safety

Pass-rusher (draft?)

Linebacker

Running back (personally not buying the DeMarco rumors until i see it)

Interesting. Even with huge cap space, Jags have willingness to spend but not overspend. Never players on Suh, no interest in Bulaga.

Was told by a league source that #Jaguars never had interest in OT Bryan Bulaga. After Jermey Parnell all along.

Latest rumored additions for Jaguars:

Cowboys RT Jermey Parnell

Miami DL Jared Odrick
These are solid signings. Do the Jags use a 3-4? I really liked Odrick, but he didn't fit as a 4-3 DT or DE in Miami.

Not buying it either but with the cap money the Jags have it should surprise nobody.

Wel Jags chipped away at their LB need and signed Dan Skuta from the 49ers. I assume he'll play the strong-side OTTO LB.

According to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com, the Jaguars are expected to sign San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dan Skuta after the start of free agency at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

The deal is expected to be a five-year, $20.5 million deal, per Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.
That's a lot of cash for a 29 yo. who started half a year. Good thing Chip Kelly didn't make that signing or Stephen A. would be all over him again.

The signing doesn't preclude them from signing/drafting more LB depth or frinding a Poz replacement at MLB.

A bold alternative at free safety could be Cleveland restricted free agent Tashaun Gipson. He was placed with a second-round tender by the Browns on Monday; if he signs with another team, the Browns have the right to match or take the new team’s second round pick. For the Jaguars, that would be No. 36 overall.

Ka-Ching! Shad gets the checkbook out again

@EliotShorrParks: Cross Davon House off #Eagles watch list, even though they never showed interest, which is surprising.

@EliotShorrParks: House gets $6.5 per year for 4 years from Jags, according to multiple reports. Thats a good deal for both sides.

I stopped looking at the total $, and look at the guaranteed $. I don't think Dan Skuta is going to see too much of that.

I am actually tired from all this action. This Demarco drama needs to end. Offer him more than enough or step off already.

Still and estimated $31M under the cap, with no one to extend next year.

DTWD

Jags seem to have set parameters for their free agent pickups:

- between 3 and 5 years experience

- except for Thomas have 3 to 10 games starting experience

- grade positively in analytics (all have positive grades from PFF)

The 3 to 5 years makes sense since they're basically replacing all the guys they might have had if Gene Smith hadn't produced washout draft classes.

Dave Caldwell tidbits

- Jags got 3 of their 5 main targets

- used McCourty money to get Skuta, House, and Sergio Brown

- nothing much brewing on Murray

- might look for veteran slot receiver

Red Bryant was waived today. He signed a 4 year deal for $19M last year. No dead money with his release though.

So we don't know what guys like Skuta and Brown are really earning until we see the guaranteed money/year.

More on Parnell and the o-line. The common perception is that the Jags o-line is horrible and it dooms their offense. This perception is especially present in the Julius Thomas/free agency threads.

PFF ranked the Jags o-line at 18th, above the Seahawks before free agency.

Last year saw the offense improve when rookies Luke Bowanko and Brandon Linder were inserted at center/right guard respectively. Joekel struggled at times at LT in his first full year .Beadles was somewhat underwhelming considering his contract at LG. But the biggest need was at RT. Parnell's addition is huge especially if he can allow them to run his way.

@ryanohalloran: Per @NFLPA -- #Jaguars have $31,603,095 in cap space, third-most in league behind Jets and Cleveland.

All that spending and still a ton of cap room left. I expect bargain signings for the rest of FA though. They'll once again spend big for a blue chipper next year.

As as Bortles owner, I am concerned about the God-awful amount of sacks in 2014. Do you folks feel the OL has been upgraded enough?

Enough? Hard to say, but they re-signed Pasztor and added Parnell.

Joeckel must prove he's a good LT.

Pasztor can play LG so hopefully Parnell can beat him out at RT. Pasztor has had trouble staying healthy so not sure he can be relied on as a starter.

Rookies RG Brandon Linder and C Luke Bowanko appear to have played well last year.

Barring injury the starting lineup looks ok, but they need to get some depth.

RT was a sieve last year, so Parnell helps immensely. The line was not well coached last year and it showed. Hopefully that changes this year. An offseason in the weight room will hopefully help Bowanko and Joeckel.

Parnell was played starters money. Pasztor was re-signed for depth. Sure Pasztor can play guard but if Beadles can't beat him out, something's wrong.

They need more C/G depth.
