Official Johnny Manziel Thread (2 Viewers)

I do know though, that I was an irresponsible 22 year old.

However, I also know I could have easily avoided idiotic partying for the camera for more than a few days after being handed the starting job for the rest of the year, after being given explicit instructions to do just about anything BUT be seen on camera being an idiot partying.

It seems to be a combination of idiocy and defiance. Those traits do not correlate with good NFL QB.
I disagree. You have no earthly idea how you would respond if you had NFL QB level talent and zero accountability for the entirety of your 22 years on this planet. That is the point that I find most frustrating, this notion that we can apply our completely disparate experiences to where Johnny Manziel is today. We can't and I think it is important for people to accept that rather than condemn people for not being what we think they should be.
Many others in the league before Johnny have been able to do it. I am quite confident I would have been able to do it.

You are welcome to disagree, but you are wrong.
No. I am not saying that you would or would not be able to do it. I am saying that you have no idea if you would or would not be able to do it, particularly if you had lived the same 22 years that Manziel had.

Why is this seemingly obvious observation so difficult for people to understand?

Either way, even if everything you are saying is 100% correct (which it is not but I will humor you), it doesnt matter because the reality of it is that JF is a screw up, can not follow simple rules, is very immature (dude parties like a 13 year old), and is a buffoon.

It doesnt matter WHY, it just matters that he IS

If I lived the same 22 years had, I am confident I would still have been able to avoid flying to Texas and party on camera after my coach specifically told me not to. Why is that so hard for you to understand?

Unless you are also saying if I was born with Johnny's brain also, in which case, duh, of course I would do all the same stupid things he did.

I don't disagree with your conclusion but you speak from a position of fact when you don't have enough information to do so. From the information we have we can only formulate opinion, yours may be right, I think it likely is the difference is that I am not stating it as a fact.

Just curious, but what would you need to have sitting in front of you to be able accept any of these as "facts"? Serious question.

Because there is no way to know that despite your protestations otherwise.

You have never had NFL caliber talent, you have never been granted passes for every transgression during your life, you have never been adored by hundreds of thousands of fans who think you can do no wrong etc. etc. etc. But keep thinking that you can view those things through the lens of your completely different experiences and state as a fact that you know how you would have turned out. You're wrong but it's your right to be wrong.

More time. The full story will likely come out eventually, it typically does. It may not be likely but it is possible that Pettine may be holding Manziel to a different standard than he does other players. It is possible that he feels Manziel was forced upon him and he is not invested in seeing him succeed so he can be proven right. I don't know if that is plausible but it is very possible. We don't know. Egos are enormous in that industry and not just with the players (anyone think Belichick doesn't think he is the smartest guy in football?). But all that video showed was some champagne karaoke from a player on his bye week coming off his best game (350+ yards, 73+% completions on 45 attempts, 8+ yards per attempt a TD and a Pick). It feels like a hair trigger on Pettine's part.

Manziel is likely the problem, judging from all we hear but I think people are far to quick with their absolute condemnations based upon incomplete information. Most of them are likely terrible poker players, even though they likely believe otherwise.

Whatever floats your boat. Like I said, if I had his exact brain and body, you would be correct.
You wouldn't need his exact same brain. All you would need is for your nascent brain to be developed with his exact experiences (or very similar ones). You keep viewing it from the perspective of your (almost) fully realized brain and applying that to what you know of him. You're comparing apples to space ships.

All we see on that video is Johnny doing exactly what he was told not to do. Why are you not getting that part?? And this isn't even strike 3, it is like strike 14

Can you please keep talking, I am actually laughing reading this.

Would you please post the transcript of what he was told to do an not to do? I must have missed that one.

Happy to help. Sorry you don't understand though..

Sorry, I need more time.

I can't believe this is really an argument here....the position of qb in the NFL is different than any other in all of sports. The qb is the guy who sets the tone. I remember a few years back when Romo took a Caribbean trip on the bye week. He got crucified for just taking the trip. Manziel is an idiot. He drinks too much for someone who is a leader of an NFL team and probably at one point had a coke problem (might still have it). This is why he is getting demoted. Anyone with half a brain would be laying low and spending extra time studying film.

People bring up #### like Joe Namath and Desean Jackson and they are not even remotely comparable; one played in a totally different era where many of the dudes had second jobs and what not, and the other plays a diva position , which is quite frankly a dime a dozen, so who cares if he parties?

Just think of all the top qbs in the league and think about what their reputations are as far as being devout students of the game, being demanding of others, being total hard ###es and #####. Johnny Dumb### doesn't get it. Like another person pointed out even Winston looks like he has seen the light. If you are the qb and you want to stay the qb, you have to be the first one in and the last one out; plain and simple. You can't bogart a pile of coke and then not wake up for practice.
My problem isn't with the notion that he may be all the things you say he is. My problem is with all the people who state those things as a fact.

You really should be able to back up assertions, particularly when you accuse someone of being a coke head. AFAIK the most damning evidence of cocaine is a cell phone photo which doesn't really show much of anything.
You must not have much experience with party.

Not being able to hear your alarm after a night of partying means one thing: drugs. Maybe not coke, maybe some other type of drug. Since the photo is out there I am going with coke. Also, you might not have any experience with hard drugs and you might not understand the allure and the physical longing once you have done it enough times. It just makes sense that he is on coke. I know, circumstantial evidence, but hey...how many people have been convicted on that? Lots.

Josh Gordon is a church mouse compared to JF as far as partying goes.

Strangely, Gordon might even be more responsible. He just isn't as good at not getting caught.

Here's the rub with JF for me though. Even if he were to pull a 180 inside that head, I still don't think he would be anything better than a bottom rung starting QB

The bottom line here is that the best players need to set an example for others. If your qb is not your best player or close to it your team is screwed. So having the qb portray a party boy image is detrimental to the team culture. There is no way it can work. We all know he was warned many times. In layman's terms we call it 'the straw that broke the camel's back'.

He is done.

I don't think JM is in the program. Why? I could not say, But that is probably the reason. Once you are in the drug protocol, you get surprise visits all the time.

This thread is taking on Christine Michael overtones. Yes obviously he's dynasty investment material but right now he's a third stringer who will be inactive all this year. His value should be rock bottom. I guess I see the point of arguing if his career is salvageable and whether his habits affect what he does on field, but this chapter and maybe a whole book is finished. You're going to have to wait for the sequel to see what happens next and that's going to take a long time.

Would anyone be surprised if no teams take a chance on him? If a team does sign him at no risk then they also will not have the investment the Browns have had and so also won't have the patience or persistence. His rope is getting shorter. There are very few teams where he could make a difference, and you're going to have to wait months to find out who that is.

I will say he's lucky McCown got hurt twice this year because without those Ten & Pit games all anyone would remember was the Cincy disaster in 2014. He probably showed just enough to keep some teams intrigued, but they have to gauge whether having a pr headache and potential drunk as a backup/project is really worth it.

I am really bummed that JF got demoted though. I wanted to go 2-14. We had a great shot at that with him at the helm
It's funny how Browns fans think Manziel is the reason their losing :)
I sort of had that same thought. Not sure why any true Browns fan would want to see them trotting out a what, 36 year old, QB that clearly isn't the future rather than seeing what they have in their first round pick from last year? McCown is a known commodity, you have tons of film to know exactly what you have with him. I guess they would prefer that wonderful 4-12 record rather than see what they have in JF. Odd.

One more thing that's too bad about this is we'll not get to see the football questions answered. We heard so many arguments about what Johnny was or was not going to be able to do. I wanted to see those play out.

Ditto, I really was curious to see that.

And we were just about to get a good 6 week opportunity to find out, but Manziel's immaturity and possibly his addiction issues as well torpedoed that opportunity.

i love the conspiracy theories in here.

the full story will eventually come out, and it's highly likely this kid is an even bigger screw up than we thought.

and i don't get the condemnation thing either. i don't care if the kid parties. it's not my problem.

the Browns clearly weren't happy with his preparation. end of the story, imo.

This really is the relevant part.

His employer told him that they don't want him doing it. I'm guessing they told him if he did that he'd be benched. He did it anyway.

On another team, his behavior would be less of an issue (see: Dallas Cowboys) but the Browns set the parameters and he went outside them.

We can argue if the parameters make sense but Manziel clearly doesn't want to live within them. At this point its caveat emptor.

I would love to know what was said to JF prior to the bye week. I know it was mentioned that Johnny said he would not do anything detrimental to the team. With 5 days off I don't know how detrimental going to party is for a couple of nights even with JF's track record.

Look JF has some major growing up to do and if he lied about how old the video was that is just dumb, but the partying in the first place with 5 days off is minor in the grand scheme of things even with his track record and even at his position as a qb.

The Brown's had nothing to lose starting JF going forward to finish off this season. If he sucks, then you cut and move on. If he ends up playing well and not sucking and you still don't trust him and want to move on from his antics he would at least have some type of pulse for a trade. Now you have not only wasted a 1st round pick on this guy, but you are wasting any opportunity to get any value out of that pick. There is a reason that the Browns are in this position in the first place. You have very poor leadership top to bottom. Sucks for them.

Addicts lie. Doesn't really change anything for me. He has showed that he can play, but he needs to be committed to changing.

god how i wish the draft day rumors were true and jerry jones "stole" him from us vs. taking the guard.

who knows, maybe JF learns from romo for a year and could have one a few of the 7 games they just lost w/ romo out.

tough to be a browns fan...

Serious chance he's starting for Dallas soon.
I'd take a 3rd or 4th and run like hell. But Farmer isn't smart enough to pull that off. and we're past the trade deadline.

There are still people who aren't aware that what is between the ears is just as important as the physical talents in order to be a successful NFL QB?

Baffling....

ehh, alcohol is pretty damn hard to wake up from. in fact, in my experience, which is just about every drug and every means of ingestion, alcohol still takes the top spot for worst mornings.

Check out 23 year old Favre in this video...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6gFiOKfiDg
I agree that throughout NFL history hundreds of players have gotten away with far worse than Manziel but let's be honest, while he may be talented Manziel doesn't have anywhere near the arm talent that Brett Favre did.

Then again I think they are both very close in the knucklehead arena.
Umm...Favre doesn't even come close to Johnny in the area of knucklehead. Let's do a comparison if Johnny ends up playing more than 20 years.
