Deone Bucannon (1 Viewer)

Any thoughts on Arizona drafting this kid from Washington State? I actually like him more for fantasy purposes than Pryor and Clinton-Dix. Anybody else?

Minter and Foote have different styles than Dansby and Washington, and Bowles will have to adjust. One possibility, for instance, is rookie safety Deone Bucannon replacing Foote when the Cardinals use six defensive backs.

"We have a young man in Deone who is just a natural for it," Arians said. "Sixty percent of the game is nickel (defense), and whether we have two linebackers out there or a safety and a linebacker is yet to be seen.

No way more than Pryor. Pryor will just have to blantantly suck or get injured to not be the #1 scoring rookie safety in normal scoring leagues. In MHO

Yeah I posted that a long time ago. I agree about Pryor and actually when I posted that I had drafted Bucannon but since then I actually traded Bucannon and ended up with Pryor.

I see three arguments that can be made that Bucannon should be in the same tier as Pryor:

1) he's likely to be the every down SS in Arizona from day one

2) early reports suggest he's expected to play the LB role in their dime

3) the tackle opportunity should be significant considering Arizona's LB issues

Pryor is a terrific prospect in a great situation. But so is Bucannon. Wouldn't consider it much of an upset if Bucannon outscores Pryor this year.

He's better than Pryor. Bucannon is a better athlete and a better performer. Mainstream is wrong here.

Maybe, but talent level isn't that different and I like the past history of the Jets safeties compared to that of Zona and I think Pryor is more talented then them. I still say Pryor in normal scoring leagues easily unless injuries happen. Just mho

Great post, I agree.

Buchanon is bigger, faster and tested better athletically at the combine, has an intriguingly versatile skill set (I think he led the Pac-12 in tackles one season, not just among safeties, and had 15 career INTs) and as you noted, also has a great situation. It definitely won't surprise me if he is the top rookie in redraft, or has a better career for dynasty purposes.

Also, while they are both monster hitters, Pryor may have a bit more of a concussion history, and be at greater long term risk (looking at their respective playing styles, he may be more reckless and have less regard for his body).

I would take Pryor first, but it is very close, and since he is available later (though not always by much), may not only be a nice consolation prize, but in fact offer the better value.

Exactly Bob...

I like both players quite a bit. Almost to the point of it being a coin flip between the two. But the real value here is the ability to get Bucannon later in drafts. I'd rather have Bucannon and an upgrade at another position than pay a higher premium for Pryor who I expect to be in the exact same tier.

With Washington and maybe Mathieu out a while may be better this year too.

I believe on a recent podcast they had pretty much ceded the starting job to other players --- did this look any different over the weekend, or do i have to watch it myself?

He did not start, and it looks like he might only play in sub packages this season.

He didn't start but he was in in the 1st quarter, he may not start early but think it's too early to he'll only play in sub packages too. The next game may tell us more.

Looks like Honey Badger started week three last year (13 games played, 11 started?), it will be interesting to see how Buchanon compares in his rookie season.

Played just 32 of 58 defensive snaps in week 12 vs Seattle and had 6 total tackles and sack. I expect his upside to be severely capped due to usage but if an injury occurs in that secondary and he is forced into a larger role, look out.

While he is a little smaller ....

I have been wondering if he can become what Daryl Washington was in ARI? Especially if they leave him at the ILB spot next year.

Got him in two leagues ... been killing it all season. In both drafts, almost everyone else had no idea who he was when I drafted him. Love it when that happens and the guy blows up. Thumbs up to the FBG IDPers.

Huge game last night pulled me to within striking distance for tonight. That pick 6 was the big play I needed.

He has been great all season.

What happens next season? Will he stay at LB?
My guess he stays in that same roll but it will be interesting to see if his position gets officially changed or not. It will be the key to his IDP value for sure.
Boy, it would be a surprise if he isn't changed to LB next year IMO.
I think he'll initially be changed, but with the injuries at S and him likely playing S in the preseason he'll be changed back with the second MFL position changes that come through in 2016.

I have to think that any of us are pretty much speculating

1) where he will play next year (but if you were AZ, would you move him back to S?)

2) if he will be changed (if he is playing in same role, he really is a LB and probably should be changed)

But I too have my opinion- I wouldn't move him back to S, despite the Mathieu injury, he was an absolute stud, probably team defensive MVP as the LB.

I think he will play the same role, and as he is a LB, I have to think he is re-classified as a LB next offseason. Just my opinion connecting the dots.

BTW- it is really interesting to go back and re-look at this thread in light of how these two have turned out....
