WR Martavis Bryant (1 Viewer)

Surprised that the Steelers were able to keep this so close to the vest. Probably explains why they drafted Sammy Coates. But that was months ago! So the Steelers have known about this for the last six months and knew they'd be without him for the beginning of the year? And that's why Ben talked up Markus Wheaton?

Wish we would have known this type of info before the draft! How come that weasel Adam Schefter couldn't uncover this nugget of information that would have been so helpful? Martavius is smoking away his pure talent. I also do hope this doesn't become a sad Josh Gordon or Justin Blackmon case.
No the Steelers reportedly didn't know about the failed tests or impending suspension until a few weeks before the news came out.

Tomlin was saying in that article, from what I can tell at least - that they considered Martavis a high-risk player and drafted Coates because of that.

saw on twitetr, from someone respectable today, that they did know during the draft...

Ill have to try and find it again, and make sure it was legit

I'm hoping, cause I obviously don't know - that he isn't as dumb as Blackmon or Gordon.
In order for a player to be suspended for marijuana use, he would have had to have failed multiple tests -- as many as four reportedly -- since entering the NFL last year.
If it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck ...

But does it look like a Duck...... wait, actually it does never mind proceed !

Heywood-Bey is terrible. Wheaton can't stretch the field. Sammie Coats is too raw and needs to learn a lot before he's effective.

Bryant is going to come back week 5 and be a top 10 FF WR.

I agree. He might be just as dumb as Gordon and Blackmon, but like them, he's money when he's on the field. Chances are good that he'll be on the field from weeks 5-16 of this season. I can't wait.

I'm a Steelers' fan and hope you guys are right, but top 10 is an awfully high bar to set considering the amount of targets Brown and Bell (and to a lesser extent Miller) command.

God I cant wait for this. This offense is humming with Deangelo, Wheaton, and Heywood Bey playing roles. The upside with Leveon and Martavis is scary. And the defense is bad. Perfect storm.

Agreed, I think that many pundits are underestimating the difference Bell and Bryant will make.

Collingsworth said that the Steelers "Weren't even missing Bell" when we played the Steelers. What a stupid thing to say. If Williams is doing this well, Bell will do better because he's so much more dynamic.

But I think Bryant is going to go off when he comes back. With Bell and Brown getting most of the double teams Bryant could get multiple bombs each game!

I also think that he's likely to struggle with getting consistent targets -- Brown, Bell, and Miller will be ahead in the pecking order, and last year's fantasy points per target is completely unsustainable.

I still like the guy, but the FF WR1 talk up thread seems like a huge reach IMO.

He still sounds pretty risky to me. I would try to package him in a 2 for 1 trade. Get yourself a safer, quality starter. There's gotta be tons of people out there who buy the hype

They missed Bryant these first 2 games more than Bell.

For as good as DeAngelo has looked, Bell is so much more of a complete player than DeAngelo. Bryant was certainly missed against the Pats but I thought DHB played a great game against the Niners.

You may be right but Bryant was looking pretty darn good in pre-season and that was long after the Steelers knew a suspension was coming.

The Eagles looked pretty good in preseason too.

It's preseason.

Bryant has proven in the regular season that he is the real deal. The only question is whether he has straighten himself out and will the Steelers immediately put him back on the field or ease him in like they did last year.

My guess is if he is ready to come back after his 4 game suspension he will be a major part of the Steelers offense within a game or two at the most.

There is obvious risk here but I'm very happy to hear Martavis is working with John Lucas. Go Terps!

I have MB in both of my main redrafts and am cautiously optimistic that he will come back week 5 and be a difference maker in FF. And by difference maker I'm talking a top 15 WR the rest of the season. Looking at his TDs from last year it seemed that he scored in almost every way possible. Fades in the redzone, intermediate to deep post routes, corner routes, WR screen, and of course the over the top go route. And this was all as a rookie missing the first 6 weeks of the season. Obviously he only caught 26 balls but there was a lot more to his game than just deep routes.

Aside from the suspension all I heard were positives on Bryant during the offseason. Was reportedly in great shape with considerable added muscle and had worked on developing the finer points of playing WR- footwork, inside route running, hand usage, etc. And it seemed to show during pre-season action agaisnt #1 defenders. Take it FWIW since it was indeed pre-season but he looked dominant out there.

I try not to get too excited about players in the SP but if Christine Michael can have a 95 page thread then I'm going all in on the hype for Martavis. The size, length, top of the route speed, hip fluidity, and ball skills remind me of Randy Moss. Yes, I'm going there. I don't think he's in that class and his hands, at least in college, have been less consistent. But this kid has the goods.

His snap count will have to be higher than last year and he has the best WR in football on his team but I think he can get the targets needed to be top 15 from week 5 out. He takes the Steeler offense to another level and they will have to put up points every week to win games. All in on the Martavis Bryant hype train.

It moved a little bit.

Once he gets going, he will be fine for the rest of the season. The long off season is where you have to worry about him going Josh Gordon - Chris Henry - David Boston on ya. It's great having a guy with that much talent but man it creates a big hole when they screw ya over.

So excited about getting him back week 5 and now Ben is out 4-6 weeks.

Any hope for him with Vick?

Did you see preseason week 3? Vick is a different QB than Ben to be sure, but he still loves him some deep ball.

Doesn't Vick have a cannon? It's a downgrade but I feel like the number one requisite to Bryant approaching his ceiling is a QB who can make the most of his downfield ability.

Is anyone trying to hop on the Bryant buy low with the big ben news + still suspended?
I was trying to buy last week from a Bryant owner who was 0-2 but he didnt bite. Now he's 0-3 and still without Bryant for another week, I might throw out another offer but no Ben for 4-5 weeks for Bryant scares me a little, despite as others have noted Vick throwing the deep ball isnt an issue.

Glad I waited 4 weeks just to wait 4 more for him to have any value.
Vick will unload bombs to Bryant. it's up to him to catch them. It's one thing Vick can do.
I went to the game last night and I all I saw safe short throws, lots of dump offs, and scrambles. I don't know if the broadcast was showing something else. Although I suppose it was only off of three days of preparation.
