Time to put the Pandora thread to pasture. Was an absolutely revolutionary tool at the time, but having a low cost infinite jukebox is just so much better.

Please post hints, songs/bands/albums and good music app / service alternatives.

To kick things off - I recently re "downloaded" my song list set to Extreme quality for sync (keeping it at high for streaming), and WOW. I thought my car speakers just weren't that great ... So much better. Clear, crisp and details that I hadn't heard in a long while. Hell, I can hear background instrumentals that I didn't know were there and understand lyrics that had been garbled. I HIGHLY recommend.

I know next to nothing about spotify. I'm curious about the Extreme quality feature, though. Is that part of a basic subscription? Spotify is like $10 a month, yes?

It's the best $10/month I've ever spent. I have a permanent library that follows me everywhere on all of my devices.

My only real complaint is that some of the mixtapes and unofficial releases that I have on my ipod are not on Spotify.

Spotify uses 3 quality ratings for streaming, all in the Ogg Vorbis format.

  • ~96 kbpsNormal quality on mobile.
[*]~160 kbps
  • Desktop and web player standard quality.
  • High quality on mobile.
[*]~320 kbps (only available to Premium subscribers)
  • Desktop high quality.
  • Extreme quality on mobile.

It's about 10 now. I may pay a little less as I've had it recurring for a while, but it's EASILY worth 10 a month. Can't speak to the basic subscription as it's been a while since I upgraded it, but the extreme is really solid. Some may not hear it, but to me it's drastically better sound quality.

Get the free subscription and play around, you'll be hooked.

Also, being able to download to your own device for offline playing is awesome. I'm on a 6 hour flight cross country and have hundreds of songs with me.

Big fan. Never thought I'd be willing to give up my ipod but Spotify on the phone is way better than messing with iTunes

Spotify is a gamechanger in the music world. Been subscribing for over a year now and have no reason to cancel.

Only qualm with these companies is the $ that the artist receives. It seems like they get royally screwed while the labels and everyone else gets paid.

And this is different from the last 70 years of commercial music.... How?

This has brought music back into my life- no jok.

I regularly listen to KCRW's Music Mine and check in on Pitchfork for any of the recent releases that look interesting (their goofy ratings aside). Also randomly remember a tune or band from the old days, and more likely than not they're on Spotify. Has been an amazing resource for new and old music for me.

My only complaint is that I wish there were an easier way to add individual songs I already own to the library like Amazon Cloud Player/Prime Music.

If Prime Music can catch up to the selection on Spotify, I think that can replace it as the do everything music player.

Its much worse....ill link an article at some point
yeah- just saw something specifically related to contemporary classical musicians/composers where they're getting pretty much nothing relative to what they used to get (next to nothing).

Why don't you just re download those songs to you Spotify and set for offline listening? Not like it costs more

My dad just retired this year (classical musician, bass clarinet), and I recall hearing him ##### about what they received just from their regular recordings. Will need to ask him about this.

OK Im so confused about this stuff. Whats so bad about Pandora? I set up two or three stations I like and shuffle them and I get hours of great music for free. Occasionally a stinker comes on (have no clue how Beethoven came up today on my David Guetta/Calvin Harris shuffle) and I thumb down but its pretty painless. How is spotify better? Im not trying to argue I really am ignorant about this stuff.

I only listen off my phone now. I think I lost my ipod and havent missed it a beat.

try Spotify.

you pick the songs and can make your own playlists. or listen to radio stations sim to pandora.... but then grab songs you like to add to your own playlist (or lists).

Because you can listen to what you want to (i.e. select tracks, make playlists, listen to entire albums, etc) or if you want a Pandora type feel, just click the Spotify radio option.

What The Floppster said.

You get to pick individual songs, like a jukebox with 98% of all songs available (now that they have Floyd, Led Zep and other staples). You can stream them, or save as many as you want into your device to listen to when you don't have internet access.

In addition, you can create playlists, and they have a radio feature that is similar to (but IMO not quite as good as) Pandora and also a number of stations to get new ideas for tunes that you may not have heard before.

Love Spotify, primarily for the personalized playlists.

Only slight disappointment is no AC/DC

that is pretty slick. Ill download it now. The radio feature is mostly what I want so maybe Ill use Pandora for that and try this spotify for all other listening.

ok testing now. it definitely doesnt sound as good as pandora. sound is almost tinny compared to pandora

While the pandora like capabilities are not quite on par with pandora, the fact that you hear a new song (or old forgotten one) and like it, then you download it, have it every and anywhere for playlists or whatever is sweet.

Love it. Like how I can set it up to run "offline" so that I am not using data in the car.

My only issue is the fact that you can only buy one user per account. They need a 'family plan' so that you can use it on a couple devices simultaneously, or not have to re-sync stuff when others use the service. It's annoying that when my wife goes out for a run, I have to turn it off at home. I'd pay a bit more ~$15 for the ability to run 2 or 3.

That's a great idea, hopefully they are working in it. I'll sometimes try to log in and my wife is playing her ####ty pop tunes at girls night and I'm SOL - although actually, if we are not connected to the the internet, couldn't we listen offline while someone else is logged in?

how is this better than Songza for free?
Is a Songza user able to play specific songs whenever they want?
no. is that the only difference and i have to pay 120 investable dollars a year for it?
I don't know if it's the only difference but it is a significant one. One well worth the "investable" $120. Don't you allocate a portion of your disposable income to entertainment? Do you not eat meals at restaurants, do you buy all of your clothes from thrift shops, do you not waste time on the innerwebs that instead could be spent on studying up on restorative dentistry?

Here we go again

For you Android/Chromecast users out there.... the Spoticast developer posted an update to his Google+ page that plays nice with the latest Spotify update.

I have spotify and don't pay a fee - its free with wifi and laptop.

Can't speak to the lower rates, but the extreme is definitely too notch.
Doing some research it seems the sound quality on spotify is better rated and pandora free is only 64 kbs. Wow. Maybe it was just the one song I was playing. Ill give it another shot.

One of the things I hated about my ipod was a strange phenomenon. I liked all the songs on my ipod yet I ALWAYS found myself skipping songs and never could figure out what I wanted to listen to. I can see myself doing the same with spotify. I listen to my music when working out & when people are over. Pandora works best for my purposes. I can definitely see the allure of spotify though!

Free on tablets too.

@Shady the reason I got started on Spotify was the ability to subscribe to other people's playlists. Radio stations and websites and the like. That may be something you find useful at some point?? Just throwing it out there, I see to reason to switch if you are comfortable. I was running both for awhile and finally just gave up on Pandora because I did not need two services (well 3, if you count my Google Music - but I just store my music there, I do not have the All Access service)
