Austin Davis (1 Viewer)

Dismattle

Im guessing what some of the knocks could be (ie. time under center)

But, its kinda like Shotty is getting a do-over is a sense, if he wants to go that route.

Now I wont say "Season is Over", its time to focus on what is here to stay ex. what works / what needs to go away

However if there was gonna be a time and a place for split time amongst QB's, this fits the bill:

I would set a precedence similar to a starting pitcher, and a closer..

Yes, Im implying even if game is goin good w a leading score, Id feel much safer, w/ Hill managing the clock..

Now 1/2 way though the Season, if Coach's feel the score is almost guaranteed to rise w/ Davis on the field (Now we have a starter)

Obviously Davis isn't probably best suited for the "option", and the Rams are setup to be run-first.

Ive also seen mention of a lack of strong competition for Davis.

afaik the above just about covers arguments that most wouldn't argue

 • time in the System ex. min of two OTA's
 • steadily improving QB in College (perctage more than TD/Int)
 • record setting pace in quite a few stats (broke Favre's Freshman TD record)
Heres a discussion that may become worthwhile to follow:

http://goo.gl/fb/DH74HW

p.s. Im not saying to roster in the least. I still have Logan Thomas rostered myself, and no current plans to change anything.. (although Im still intrigued about Cousins)

Do any of the QB gurus care to comment on his 2nd half performance (200 yds?)

H. Smith is a great DB, imho, so no need to comment or add too the pick six.

p.s. I believe most are interested in how he handles pressures/ hitting the open guys Or even Did he look like he was on a limited playbook? Id just like to hear your thoughts!

Hey chook I appreciate your posting, but I cant really comment just yet

I need to see it w my eyes! But, I would consider pumping the breaks slightly if not a 2 QB League, considering the fact that were talking a run-first team. imo A run-first team, but man it sure seems like they wanna pass on paper to me..

I saw him play vs the Saints in PS and thought he looked good.

So it looks like Hill could have played, but got yanked?
yeah No help here tbh Im reading what Yahoo has posted. It "appears" Hill played the entire first half, but left w injury (knee/leg) It also appears Davis played the whole 2nd half, and put up nearly 200 yds, but threw an interception. It will be hard to get real info from a lot of people imho Because: Hill may have stunk up the field, and throwing a pick six (aww ####) eliminates a lot of attaboys. Basically Fans knew Plan C was on the field, and were probably waiting and watching for poor play.

I did roster Davis based purely on the cost of a starting QB in a two QB League..

I believe Hill came out after halftime holding his helmet..

Heres Quote:

Davis opened the second half at quarterback after the Rams said Hill suffered a thigh injury. We're not believing it, as Hill was flat-out terrible in the first half. Davis wasn't much better. He took four sacks and tossed an 81-yard pick-six to Harrison Smith in the fourth quarter. The Rams are in for a nightmare season with these two at quarterback. Case Keenum will likely be called on to make starts in the very near future. Davis isn't a fantasy option in Week 2 at Tampa.

imho The Rams as a team were outplayed

Good bump.

What was the story today, was Dallas' D just that bad? Or is there something there?
I watched most of this game (I own Romo and Murray.)

I really do think there's something there with this guy. He's not as spectacular as Kirk Cousins (who will no doubt get most of the attention) but he makes some very good throws, makes good decisions (his interception came when he had to force some throws once St. Louis got behind). He's the real deal, IMO.

As far as fantasy goes, I don't know. Not sure the Rams have enough firepower to make any quarterback a viable starting option every week. But in terms of real football, I think Davis is as good as any Rams quarterback they've had in a few years.

Should be interesting to watch Fisher throw it in reverse as far as keeping Hill as his starter. If he does, he should be immediately fired. Hill is a career journeyman backup. You want to see if Davis can be your starter instead of wasting a 1st round draft pick next spring

I just watched St Louis v Dallas via NFL game rewind, and came away impressed with Davis. Granted, he got a lot of help from the running game and played against Dallas, probably the worst defense in the league. Admittedly, one should probably take everything from that game with a grain of salt.

Nevertheless, Davis got rid of the ball quickly, threw a lot of accurate passes, and seems to have decent pocket awareness. I couldn't really tell on my computer about his arm strength, but he at least has a good throwing motion. I honestly thought Davis looked better than Romo. His stat line reflects a solid performance, but he could have easily had an even better game had he not barely missed on a few long balls and/or Cook didn't drop a sure touchdown.

Following a week 4 bye, the Rams next play the Eagles, a perfect match up for a quarterback. I guess now is the time to buy Davis if you call yourself a believer.

I said it somewhere but when the Rams played the Saints in preseason I was impressed too.

Look at the production he got from different receivers, Britt showed up and even Cook was productive (yes I know the Cowboys, but Bradford has underwhelmed in many good matchups).

So 30/42/327/3/2 gets you a benching in StL for a career backup while staring a potential lost season in the face at 1-2 and Philly, San Fran and Seattle up next?

Coach Jeff Fisher maintains the 34-year-old Hill is his starter if healthy, and Hill believes he's closer to being ready for the Oct. 5 game at Philadelphia.

I think the game has passed Fisher by. He's been coaching for over 20 years. A lot has changed in that time. Sticking with journeymen backups when a rookie flashed something for your team going no where will make sure he has a shorter stay in Stl than his last gig.

Im not trying to hype Davis, because Im no longer an Owner! But I just seen this link posted on Twitter http://blogs.ourlads.com/2013/03/27/quarterback-ball-velocity-at-nfl-combine-2008-2012/

YEAR: 2012
Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State 59
Kirk Cousins, Michigan State 59
Austin Davis, Southern Mississippi 58
Nick Foles, Arizona 57
Chandler Harnish, Northern Illinois 57
Basically 58 sounds bit high to have reports indicate, We have a "noodle arm" QB making the throws..

A Coach's job is to get 110% from his players, so lets not roast any bad choices just yet.

p.s. On Twitter, it appears that Rams Fans are still onboard w/ Davis. Questionable Defenses, but very high completion rate. Does someone have a current link stating any bad news?

I agree with the above. If I am the general manager I am going to Fischer and telling him this kid has to play. Bradford isn't the long term answer, Hill isn't either. Davis might not be either, but I want to find out and I want to find out this year. This way I will know if I am looking for a quarterback in the first round in the draft in 2015

...
 • record setting pace in quite a few stats (broke Favre's Freshman TD record)...
Actually he broke ALL of Favre's USM records.

You might think that for someone who broke all of Brett Favre's records at the University of Southern Mississippi, a chance to play in the NFL would come easy. However, that has not been the case for current St. Louis Rams and former USM quarterback Austin Davis.

#In fact, Davis didn't have an easy road to his record-breaking career for the Golden Eagles. Even after being the winningest quarterback in Collinsville, Miss.'s West Lauderdale High School history and being chosen to participate in the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Game, Davis didn't receive many college football offers.

#Davis instead went to USM for baseball and walked on to the football team. The Golden Eagles redshirted him in the 2007 season, and he got a chance to be the starter for the 2008 season as a redshirt freshman.

#As a four-year starter for Southern Miss, Davis compiled a 30-15 record in his 45 starts. By the time his career at USM was over, Davis owned every major passing record for single game and career in school history.

#In his final season with the Golden Eagles in 2011, Davis won the Conerly Trophy as the state's best football player. He also led Southern Miss to a Conference USA East title. The highlight of the season was a 49-28 win over sixth-ranked Houston in the C-USA Championship Game.

#There were more than a few knocks on Davis heading into the 2012 NFL Draft, though. Many scouts didn't like his arm strength, thought he was too short, that he played in the shotgun at USM and that he was a product of then-coach Larry Fedora's system.

#Because of those perceptions, Davis went undrafted and signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent. St Louis wouldn't activate the quarterback for any part of the 2012 season.

#Heading into 2013, the Rams cut Davis, who then signed with the Miami Dolphins practice squad. In October of 2013, Davis returned to St Louis as the Rams backup quarterback, for Kellen Clemens after starter Sam Bradford was lost for the season with a knee injury. Davis didn't play a down in 2013 either.

#A healthy Bradford returned to St. Louis this season, the team signed Shaun Hill to be the backup and drafted Garrett Gilbert in the sixth round out of SMU. Davis was expected to battle with Gilbert for the third string job.

#After Bradford reinjured the same knee in the third preseason game, he didn't make it to the regular season. That left Hill the starter until he was injured in the team's first regular-season game against the Vikings.

#Hill left the game at halftime with a quadriceps injury. That meant Davis would see his first NFL action.

#Davis finished the game, throwing for 192 yards while completing 16 of 23 attempts with one interception as the Rams fell 34-6 to the Vikings. He got his first NFL start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the next week.

#The former Southern Miss star went 22 for 29 in pass attempts for 235 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He would lead the Rams to a late field goal for the 19-17 win—the first of the season for St. Louis.

#Davis started this past week against the Dallas Cowboys. He went 327 yards on 30 of 42 attempts with three touchdowns and two interceptions. His last interception sealed the 34-31 comeback victory for the Cowboys.

#Currently Davis is ninth in the NFL in passing yards with 754 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. His 72.3 percent completion percentage is better than Tony Romo, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

#Davis has a 93.1 quarterback rating, which is better than Super Bowl winning quarterback Eli Manning, Brady, Joe Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger. He averages 251 yards passed per game.

#St Louis head coach Jeff Fisher has stated once Hill is healthy, he will be the starter, but I think the Rams should go with Davis. Hill is in his 13th year in the league and Davis is in his second. At 25, Davis is nine years younger than the 35-year-old Hill.

#Davis should get his shot to prove he is the future of the organization at quarterback. He has proved over the last two and half games that he can play in the NFL.

#St. Louis has a bye week this week before playing the Eagles in Philadelphia. Davis should be under center when the Rams play on Oct. 5, or Fisher doesn't know a potential franchise quarterback when the rest of us see one.

Folks from the JFP may not get up to St, Louis much.

I agree that he should stick with Davis, but most coaches aren't going to conceded their team is "going nowhere" after three games.

Austin Davis - QB - Rams

Coach Jeff Fisher announced that Austin Davis will be the Rams' starting quarterback moving forward.

Fisher says there will be "no short hook." After initially claiming Shaun Hill would resume the starting job once 100 percent healthy from a Week 1 thigh injury, Fisher has changed course. Rightfully so. Among quarterbacks with at least 90 pass attempts, Davis is tops in the league with his 72.3 completion percentage. He's averaging a healthy 8.0 YPA with a 3:3 TD:INT ratio. He's had a couple back-breaking turnovers, but Davis has generally moved the offense pretty well. Davis has a plus matchup against the Eagles this week, but is still a QB2. Davis isn't the long-term option past 2014. The Rams should know that.

They're Rotowold. They're awesome. It's always best to either only read the first two lines of any Rotoworld post, or read the remainder only for entertainment value.

Looking forward to seeing what he can do for the rest of the year. The new kurt warner he likely isn't, but he seems competent.

It's the special Rotoworld Bat-Signalto get out there and immediately acquire Davis in every dynasty league you play in.

Never fails!

Of all the teams to dismiss an undrafted (or late round) QB as having any kind of shot of being the long term answer Rotoworld really wants to do that with the Rams?

I guess Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger weren't the long term answers - I mean the only successful QB the Rams have had recently is Sam Bradford, who at No. 1 overall is a can't miss prospect.

I am glad Fisher changed his mind. This kid could be the next Kurt Warner or Tom Brady, or he could be the next Case Keenum. Better to find out now and so you know what you need in the draft next year

Amen, brother. I picked up Davis in my one and only dynasty league over the Rams bye week in the hopes that Fisher would come to his senses. Even though it's the subject of another thread, I would say for anyone looking for a cheap flyer on another potential dynasty QB look to Drew Stanton. The vibe I'm getting from the Carson Palmer nerve injury thing has sent my Spider-sense tingling to continue running with the comic book references. ;)

I would not be surprised if he has a good day today. I think if I was scrambling around for QBs right now I'd have grabbed him for today.

I picked him up in both my leagues before the bye. Was debating starting him over Romo.

And just like that, he has some serious weapons on offense to throw to. If britt and Quick continue to play up to their potential...add in bailey and austin....a few competent rbs to dump passes off to in stacey and cunningham...a qb that isnt afraid to sling it...a bad defense...and we have a recipe for fantasy success.

You got yourself a stew!

Anyone who watched the game, how did he actually look? Does he appear to be a guy they could roll with more long-term or is he just a stopgap?

I saw some of the game. I thought he looked good. He did play a bad pass D, so let's not get ahead of ourselves and his schedule actually looks pretty brutal, but he definitely looked solid.

I watched as Austin owner with an Eagles fan. He looks legit when he slings it. A few real off throws in first but unlike a lot of young qb's he isn't afraid to whip it to a guy who isn't totally open. I find that is difference between successful and unsuccessful young qbs.

Guys like Bradford or Carr will only throw to a guy open by a mile. Davis is trying to squeeze it into a window and has the talent to do it often enough to be a successful (fantasy) quarterback.

The thing holding Davis back today was atrocious line play. Davis was taking huge hits and running for his life a lot. The two fumbles he had were due to an unblocked blitz and a total fail block. Pretty disappointing oline play.
