"Transparent". Amazon Series. (1 Viewer)

This show is all kinds of awesome. Highly recommend.
Explain.
Jeffrey Tambor is a transwoman in the process of coming out to her 3 adult kids. I think that's the term. I never get it right. Ex wife is Judith Light, who is brilliant in this role.

Kids are Gaby Hoffman, Amy Landecker, and some dude I've never seen. Also Jan from the office as a lesbian, and Carrie what's her face from Portlandia.

Touching drama that's pretty funny. Decent amount of sex, and some Christi approved bush.

About halfway through. Certainly don't go in expecting a laugh a minute. It's funny, but the humor is subtle and spaced out.

You immediately feel immersed in this family, and the performances are really fantastic. Tambor and Judith Light are obvious. Bradley Whitford's character quickly becomes a favorite. I hope his role increases.

I think a lot of people were upset about Tambor being cast here (instead of an actual trans person), but he really is perfect for the role.

ill check this out,, is this a new thing that amazon is doing their own series? trying to compete with Netflix?

This is Amazon's second wave of series. They actually do kind of a cool thing where they put about a dozen pilots out there and people vote on which ones they want to see greenlighted.

two new ones coming out

Hand of God

A morally-corrupt judge suffers a breakdown and believes God is compelling him onto a path of vigilante justice.

Red Oaks

A coming-of-age comedy set in the "go-go" 80s about a college student enjoying a last hurrah before summer comes to an end--and the future begins.

This show is great. I'm only halfway through the season but probably my favorite show I've seen in a while. Perfect show if you like "Parenthood" or other family dramas like that.

ETA: I just clicked on pollardvision's link and see that the showrunner was a writer on Six Feet Under, that's probably even a better reference than Parenthood.

The acting in this far surpasses the netflix shows. Really the only weak spot was Josh, who was a little over the top at times and was a little unbelievable.

Jan from the office was a little uneven, but good.

I don't really see where they take this show from here. The end of the final episode was such a great wrap up. Most of the storylines had come close to closing up.

I understand what you mean but I trust it. It's the best family ensemble show since 6 feet Under. Tambor is just terrific.

so...dumb question...where can I watch these Amazon shows? do I have to have a Prime membership and/or use an app on my TV?

Might need Prime, but they'd probably sell it just like other shows if you don't have it.

You either need a smart TV, a streaming (roku or video game console) or casting device (Chromecast or fire stick). Amazon Instant Video is an app for the latter two. You can also just watch on any device or laptop.

Gave this a try on Saturday & ended up watching the whole season in one sitting.

Very well done show, 2 thumbs up here.

Okay finally got to this show. It's an interesting premise and Jeffrey Tambor gives a top notch performance but I don't get the hype. It kind of reminds me a little bit of Allie McBeal in that every character has a dysfunction and there really isn't a "straight-man" in the bunch to provide the rudder to keep the show on course. And frankly most of the characters are really horrible people, I get that to be flawed is part of the human condition but particularly among Tambor's children on the show there isn't a likable one in the bunch and considering how much screen-time they get it makes it tough to care about the overall show.

I will watch season 2 because Tambor is so very good (Judith Light came on pretty strong in the last two episodes too) but I could easily walk away and not really care.

i would liken it more in tone and tenor to, say, "6 Feet Under" than other shows. it's not as premise driven in terms of plot but is very much an ensemble. i think soloway just nails what a family feels like often in this day and age.

Fine and dandy but not every single person in a family is a selfish tool with a major dysfunction.

Tambor is a likable but his transition kind of makes it difficult to view him as the one who brings normalcy to the screen. Judith Light got more screen time as the season progressed and mercifully started to provide the stable, calming perspective that it so desperately needed. However I wish she would take the whole neurotic Long Island Jew thing down about 10 notches, it's like watching Miracle Max. It's so overblown as to be almost comedic and that diminishes a lot of the sensibility that she brings to the table.

Additionally for a show that I have to imagine is trying to bring some humanity and dignity to the whole Trans community it isn't making a very good argument for them as parents. All of the kids are pretty much terrible people. I get that Tambor having to hide his true identity would be the actual contributing factor to that reality and if he were allowed to be himself (she, herself...whatever) they may have turned out better but I think that fact isn't well presented or even addressed at all and it should be at some point.

I do think it is an interesting show with lots of potential but I think it needs to grow a little more (a lot more) before I will view it up there with shows like Six Feet Under.

Seems like we could use a thread for non-Netflix streaming shows. Catastrophe is great, definitely worth checking out. Also on Amazon on Demand. It's a six-episode British romcom about an American who impregnates an Irish woman living in London during a business trip fling and decides to return to raise the baby with her. It just got picked up for a second season I think.

Honestly we should move all the streaming show talk to the Netflix thread. It's silly to have different threads. If a show is really awesome it may necessitate its own thread but, as we see with this thread, even some good shows only generate about 30 posts in 9 months. With post rates like that, and the epic craptastitude of the current search function, they get lost pretty quick.

Finally finished S2.

I can't say I absolutely loved the whole season, and this family really annoys the hell out of me at times, but the season definitely had it's moments. The last 2 episodes, in particular, were fantastic.

The women's festival thing went from awesome to heartbreaking in a hurry. I can understand both positions on the matter, and the whole situation was heartbreaking with nobody really in the wrong.

Sarah's newfound love of spanking was a nice revelation. There was something incredibly funny and heartwarming about a lady swiping her credit card through a Square reader to pay for the spanking she just received. Sarah, in general, is easily the most consistently likable character. Well, other than Kathryn Hahn. Love her. Damn I hope she's back for S3 because she just makes the show better.
