Let's put the last few months behind us.

Upgrades needed at: Offensive Line, Safeties, Defensive Line, Interior LB, Head Coach, Coordinators, GM, Scouts, Stadium, and Owner.

We can tidy all that up over the Spring and Summer, right? RIGHT!?

Season ends being blown out at home by the Cowboys. This is from the game thread:

I'm starting to think Gruden might not actually be safe...

Blown out at home by our arch-rivals, in front of Gibbs who's sitting right next to Snyder...
Gruden didn't seem like a coach who felt safe at the postgame presser. I'd like to see them let him go. They already tried having a QB specialist be head coach (Zorn) and it didn't work well. Gruden is just another Zorn, with a worse record.
For starters we need a decent head coach.

Haslett has to go.

Allen needs to give up managing personnel, or just go entirely.

Whatever the question, the answer always comes back to who owns the team. Unless that changes, poor decisions will continue to be made from the top down.

There is no hope for this team in the next 3 years minimum.

Why bother mentioning ownership? He's not selling the team.

If Snyder is the reason for this mess, then I'd say it's 30+ years of no hope.

Do we have the 5th or 6th pick?
5th. If Oakland wins, it's a 4th.

I think if Allen was going anywhere, there would be rumors about it already. Although I could see us bringing in a personnel guy, I don't think we'll outright can Allen. If it's A.J. Smith, nothing will change.

I think the best we can realistically hope for is someone with more personnel experience joining the FO, and a new DC.

Haslett did not do anything to help his case for staying today. The defense looked really bad.

In the last meeting, Breeland had a great game covering Bryant. This game, they start with Amerson on Bryant and he quickly gets 90+ yards receiving and two TDs. I don't think Dallas threw towards Breeland all day.

Also, at the end of the half, Dallas has 4th down and 20+ seconds left. Isn't it automatic to call a timeout and make them punt the ball? They could have a bad snap or fumble it. At a minimum, you get a chance for a return or a play from scrimmage. It was mind boggling that Gruden let the clock run out.

The Redskins had 3rd and 4th down and 1 at around the 4 yard line. Most teams would think they could pick up the yard with a power running play. Gurden calls two pass plays.

Also, Griffin ran the ball on read option plays a couple of time with moderate success. Morris had two of his better runs after those runs. The read option helps open up the running game. Of course it appears Gruden still does not care to run the ball.

I still think Gruden is not ready to be a head coach in the NFL. I think he will return since Snyder will not eat 4 years and $16M.

Gruden has consistently shown he's a quitter with his "clock management" (if you can call it that). He always let's the clock run out if he can, in any situation where there's a small chance at points at the end of the half or game.

Why not mention ownership ? What else is there to mention? Tampa. Oakland. Cincy. Jets. Browns. Redskins. Same crap year after year except the occasional decent season. 3 years because even bad owners get lucky sometimes.

After 43 years of attending games and watching from home since I was a 5 year old, I'm done. I will not watch or support this team. I will not switch allegiances to another nfl team. Im dc born and raised and could never root for another team But Until snyder sells or hires real football people to do the job Im done. He cares about money. Nothing else. He has screwed the people of this city and the only thing in my power to do is not support his team or any of his businesses. I hope everyone boycotts everything he does and maybe it will make a dent in his pockets.

Best of luck to all of you that can handle the more than the 20 years of futility I've watched under his reign. I can handle no more.

2014 regular season thread link: http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=712421

By far the biggest needs on the field are offensive line and safety.

Next: cornerback(s), ILB, TE's who can block (because Paulsen and Paul can't catch when it matters, and can't block).

Next: defensive line and OLB, but those may not be as bad as we think with a different DC.
Safety and Dline are the top two needs. Also CB is a bigger need if Hall doesn't come back.

CB is a huge need regardless of Hall with Amerson's game falling off a cliff. And I'm not optimistic about Hall.

I agree with what you said there. Their offense on short yardage plays, especially at the goalline, was appalling this year. It's like 1000 invisible people whom only Gruden can hear are mocking him every time he calls running plays.

He admitted in his presser that he went away from the run today when they fell behind 17-7. That was in the second first quarter. After going away from the run the team was outscored 27-10. This pattern has repeated all year ---- get behind, stop running, and fall behind more & more quickly --- and it's clear Gruden's learned nothing. I guess his plan is to collect his $5 million/year and keep losing until they present him with the Cincinnati Bengals roster to coach.

I think he'll be back, and I think next year will be a repeat of this year --- pass-heavy, lots of sacks, lots of QB blaming, lots of losses. Gruden was at his limit as an OC and even then only when he had a loaded roster. He's as over his head now as he was at the beginning of the year.

If Hall returns to health he should be signed again, cheaply. And if he makes the team he'll likely be their 2nd starting CB, unless something dramatic happens in the offseason with Amerson. I don't know what happened with Amerson, he was improving for a season and a half and then started falling apart. I'm wondering if it's an off-field reason -- drugs, family health issue, anything like that.

For playoff teams on bye weeks, their coordinators are allowed to interview. Seahawks DC Dan Quinn has a bye this week.

John Keim's reaction to the season.

The Redskins finished one game better than they did in 2013, but that’s not saying a whole lot. The last quarter against the Cowboys became a debacle and quite a capper to the season. A 4-12 record is still horrible, and now they have so many needs that this won’t be an easy fix. Since winning the NFC East in 2012, the Redskins are a combined 7-25. They haven’t done well in free agency and haven’t drafted well. It adds up to a roster in need of an overhaul. It also means we still don’t know whether Jay Gruden can be a good head coach, whether the Redskins have a quarterback and whether general manager Bruce Allen and his front office staff can put together a winning roster. And that’s the real problem: So many issues haven’t been resolved.

Just hearing this early that Foerster might go is encouraging.

These are the reasonable changes I see happening that are the bare minimum for me to show any interest next season:

Haslett gone, new DC picks his staff.

Foerster gone.

Hire QB coach.

Bonus unlikely wish: An outside talent evaluator takes an active role within our FO.

Keim

The Redskins have an offense that is transitioning between systems, from what Mike Shanahan used to do to what Gruden would prefer. He wants a more power-oriented attack but has an O-line that was built for something else.

The team ended the year with no real identity. There were a lot of returning starters (all but one spot) from a team that went 3-13. The reality was that it wasn’t just the previous staff that wasn’t good enough, it was the roster. That’s why players are dreading this offseason, knowing there could be a turnover approaching half the roster.
This season turned out to be one long preseason as Gruden figured out what these players were about, who he wanted to keep and what he wanted to add. Thing is, the organization -- those here long before Gruden -- felt this was a roster worthy of something entering the season.
Players I don't think should be back.

S. Moss

Bowen

Cousins

Thompson

Hankerson

Paulsen

Polumbus

Chester

LeRibeus

Golston

Neild

Hayward

Porter

Biggers

That's off the top of my head. And frankly I think we'll be stuck with some of those guys since it'll be tough to find replacements (who are better and/or younger) for all of them.

I don't want any more previously-injured FA's. I don't want Orakpo resigned unless it's for much less money (which he wisely won't take). I don't know how bad Murphy is hurt and how it'll affect him next year.

#Redskins finish with the worst point differential in the NFC for a second straight season. A combined minus-281 the last two seasons now.
Liz Clarke ‏@lizclarketweet 6h6 hours ago Summerfield, MD

#Redskins coach Jay Gruden told his defense at half of Dallas loss it was the worst defensive performance he'd ever seen.
Dianna Marie Russini ‏@NBCdianna 5h5 hours ago

Apparently at halftime Gruden laid into the defense saying that was the worst defensive half he'd ever seen in his life.

The Redskins schedule for 2015 is complete. The team will play road games at the New York Jets, New England, Chicago, Carolina, Atlanta and the three divisional opponents, and home games against New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Buffalo, Miami, St. Louis and the three divisional opponents.
Redskins general manager Bruce Allen, in May: “We feel there are no gaping holes on the roster.”

What our FO needs to learn is that these Golston/Paulsen/Biggers types don't do anything for you. They are below replacement-level vets, they're cheap, and they stick around because with no obviously better alternatives coaches will always go with the players they've worked with before.

But that does no good. You need to let those guys go and replace them with young potential. Just churn those roster spots until you find somebody, like Jeffcoat possibly.

We NEVER land the bigger named UDFA's, either. Well, we did get Minnifield a few years ago but he was coming off a micro-fracture surgery and was overrated. And our roster should be PERFECT for these UDFA types with potential, because we suck everywhere and lack depth everywhere. But instead we use UDFA not to bring in high-ceiling projects, but camp bodies that have almost no chance of sticking. Because we already know we're keeping the comfortable, average vets like Golston and Biggers rather than taking the risk on young guys.

It's infuriating for a roster that should be in a compete rebuild.

For the same reason it was infuriating to use a draft pick on a K to give us a camp leg. It's as if we think we're too good or too talented to find future contributors in the 6th or 7th rounds when everyone else in the league is doing it. Instead of taking a risk on, say, Crowell to sit behind Morris and unseat our lackluster RB back-ups, we throw that pick away on a Kicker who doesn't beat out our already pretty good Kicker.

I'm disgusted. Last thing I'll post tonight is from Tom Boswell

Will defensive coordinator Jim Haslett return? His defense tied for the second-most points allowed — 31st — even worse than the average of his last 13 defenses as a head coach or defensive coordinator (26th).

I found a list of the free agents for the Redskins.

Unrestricted Free Agents who won't be back:

Brian Orakpo

Tyler Polumbus

Leonard Hankerson

Santana Moss

Ryan Clark

E.J. Biggers

Tanard Jackson

Unrestricted Free Agents who may return (I think they may let all of them go):

Roy Helu

Jarvis Jenkins

Brandon Meriweather

Niles Paul

Chris Neild

Unrestricted Free Agents who will probably return:

Colt McCoy

Unrestricted Free Agents who I have not heard of:

Justin Rogers

Rishaw Johnson

Restricted Free Agents who will probably return:

Duke Ihenacho

Kai Forbath

Tom Compton

Restricted Free Agents who did not play this year:

Nick Martinez

Monte Lewis

Sam Kirkland

Chris Campbell

Exclusive Rights Free Agents

Trenton Robinson

Chris Thompson

Note: in general, you make offers all your restricted and exclusive rights free agents unless you really don't want them. They can compete for roster spots during training camp. I don't think the Redskins need to worry about another team signing one of their restricted free agents.

In general, I have disliked Gruden's give up mode at the end of games. Today, though, they had Logan Paulsen at LT at the end of the game and it would be unwise to try to do too much in a situation like that. Sure, he could have called something that gave Paulsen extra help in pass protection, but it didn't bother me as much today. The end of the first half was a different matter. That was moronic.

I think Cousins will be back. I also think the coaching staff like Chester, although none of the fans do.

I thought Bowen would be cut last year.

Many of the players listed are under contract. They will most likely be in camp competing for roster spots.

I've already posted before but want to state again, I'm a lifelong fan but having said that, I'm done. I know it's no small decision but I'm 46 years old and I've seen enough. You all go ahead and support the Redskins. I'm tired of playing the Charlie Brown role and having the football pulled away from me.

Here's some questions I have after watching this debacle of a season:

What was the purporse going into the season of keeping Moss, Hankerson and Robinson on the roster? Why not use those roster spots for OL, DL, CB, S, etc? Moss did play more as the season went on and we ended up cutting Robinson late, but those just seemed like wasted spots to me. Why keep 3 WRs you barely used over positions that were clearly bigger needs going into the season and became bigger needs as the season went on?

Where does the offense go from here? Are we going full out into the Power run game? Do we sitll do some RO (seemed to work well when we did it)? What is the identity of this offense? Right now, we have none. You can blame the QB situation, but Gruden/McVay have no idea what they want this offense to be going forward. And it isn't going to get any better unless we fix the OL.

Who coaches the defense next season? I honestly think our defense will get better with a better coach. It's obvious the defense is poorly coached. How else do you explain the penalties, the missed assignments, lining up out of position, etc? Yes, we still need help in the secondary, but some better coaching could go a long way on the defensive side of the ball IMO.

I wouldnt mind rex ryan as def coordinator

#Jets defensive ranks in six years under Rex Ryan: 1st, 3rd, 5th, 8th, 11th, 6th.
I would love that, but I think Rex wants to be a HC somewhere. Unless Snyder gives him a ton of $$, I don't see him coming here.
Then this might be the perfect place for him. I doubt he'll be able to land another head coaching job this off season. So why not come here where he's only a promotion away after the inevitable happens?

I'd rather them just fire Gruden and let Rex be the HC. You saw how hard the Jets played for him yesterday.

I'm in the anyone but Gruden camp. So yeah, that works for me too.

Rex wouldnt take any #### from snyder either. not sure how i feel about him being HC but he would keep snyder in place thats for sure.

Oh, I think Cousins will be back. I just don't think he should be back. The guy became a runaway train when he played, feeling pressure that wasn't there, throwing the ball anyplace on the field, and just destroying his own confidence. I don't think those things are fixable. A QB's whose confidence is wrecked is pretty much a goner, and I've seldom seen such as obvious example of wrecked confidence as Cousins.

As for players under contract, I think there are some cap savings that are achieved if they are cut. I don't mind them competing for roster spots. But the more players on my list who make the roster, the weaker the 2015 roster will be.

I'll paraphrase what I heard on the radio this morning.

Doc Walker: "The 3 hours every Sunday have become the worst hours of the year for me."

Chris Cooley: "This team has talent, and is close to being an 8-8 team that with a few breaks can be 10-6."

:lmao:

Chris Cooley: "They need to get rid of Robert Griffin."

Cooley has officially tanked. He's become the new Joey Sunshine, where everything will be wonderful as soon as Griffin is gone. I love his film breakdowns technically, but his overall assessments of play in games and of the team as a whole have gotten increasingly worse. He's the guy who consistently gave average or above-average grades to the O-line most of the year. Go bang another cheerleader, Chris.

Jason Reid's conclusions

Take away Allen's personnel power.

Fire Scott Campbell.

Fire Haslett.

Fire Raheem Morris.

His reasoning is solid for all of those.

He stops short of wanting to get rid of Gruden and Griffin.

Other teams with #### records are canning people today. Here we sit in silence.

Yeah Cooley seems to be a bit off lately. Maybe it's that 980 power coming down on him. But this team is not a few breaks from 10-6. At best, we were a few breaks from being 6-10.

What does getting rid of Griffin do? QB isn't the problem with this team and I wish people would stop pretending it is. OL is a huge issue. Look how bad Brees/Ryan looked yesterday with their beat up OLs.

Kirk Cousins - QB - Redskins
Kirk Cousins said he wants to be traded if Robert Griffin III is named the Redskins 2015 starter.
It's the offseason once again in Washington, which means more headline-grabbing statements from Cousins. Note that this is a guy who torpedoed any trade value he had by throwing nine interceptions in six appearances and going 1-4 as a starter. Cousins ended the season behind both Colt McCoy and RG3 on the depth chart. He wouldn't fetch anything more than a seventh-round pick (if that) on the trade market.

Cousins needs to do that. He destroyed his chances here with his performances. The players and coaches lost faith in him and he lost faith in himself. A shot somewhere else is his best chance at having a career, away from his history here and the circus here. He's young and he wants a shot, and I don't blame him for saying so. I actually hope he does well.

@KirkCousins8 focus on what you have control over. Gods plan is always perfect. None of us played good enough in 2014 to demand anything..

@NBCdianna well I don't like to hear anything like that coming out of anyone's mouth. It's a long up hill battle for us all.

On the radio, they were talking how Cousin says all the right things. But I remember he has always found a way to get into the headlines. That is not saying all the right things. It just adds to the dysfunction that is the Redskins. Of course, that makes him a perfect fit for this team.

Cousins gets in the headlines for 3 reasons:

1. it's unusual for a team to draft 2 QB's in the first 4 rounds of a draft

2. he was The Great Hope for everyone who disliked Griffin; remember the threads here pimping him?

3. Washington fans love a QB controversy

edit: Come to think of it, though --- Cousins is the only player here who said he wanted out. Even Orakpo said nothing.

edit#2: Other beat writers are taking issue with how Russini reported what Cousins said.

Here's her tweets:
