Weekly H2H, no playoffs

Total points scoring with positive points for negative outcomes (e.g. outs, caught stealing, strikeouts for batters; losses, walks, home runs allowed for pitchers) with points penalties for positive outcomes.

AB 0.5R -1.25HR -1.5TB -1RBI -1.25SB -1CS 3BB -1SO 1.75GIDP 4PICKED OFF* 3 IP -0.75H 1ER 2HR 1.5BB 1SO -1WP 5HB 5BK 5W -7L 1014 man lineups (C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OFx3, 6 P). No DL or bench slots.12 add/drops per season. That's about one every two weeks. I think it should be pretty low maintenance but will still give owners flexibility to turn their team over. If Fantrax allows trades and add/drops to be counted separately, there won't be any restrictions on trades (although the fixed lineups will make 1 for 1 trades difficult).

It should be a fun, minimal level of effort league. Prize will be winner take all with a proposed in cost of $12.95. The winner will also receive a piece of Jimmy Gobble memorabilia that doesn't cost too much to ship.

This for ####s and giggles?

Darwin Barney 1.01
No spotlighting.

Barney wouldn't be a great pick under the scoring system I'm finalizing, There's an emphasis on playing time; bad regulars are much better than bad bench players. Unfortunately, Fantrax bumps leagues using OUTS as a category into their premium tier so we're going to have to use PA or AB.

You could go roto style with minimum games played and use OBP/AVG/SLG etc. Just a thought.

The problem with that is the lack of in-season transactions. I want this to be a low maintenance league. Most people here are too busy with other leagues to care whether Munenori Kawasaki has been recalled.

I think points based scoring will work better because you can have RL good events (e.g. SB, HR) count as negative fantasy points. The trick is the formula. I'm pretty close on the hitters scoring and am trying to make bad SP score around as many points over the season as bad hitters.

NO SPOTLIGHTING!

Hmm....might be fun to tie it to salaries. Like it is pretty impressive that Nathan makes $9 million to lead the majors in blown saves by a closer.

ETA: You did not include relief pitchers on the roosters. :kicksrock:

Soriano would have been a stud last year were that the case

I'll post some straw man rules by Monday. We can spend next week hashing them out and start drafting after MLK Day.

I'm not opposed to roto or salary cap variants but I think it's really important that we keep the rules simple.

H2H roto with transactions and games/ip mins?

Interested to see what point structure the eeph comes up with though...

Proposed scoring rules:

BATTING
AB 0.5
BB -1
CS 3
GIDP 3
HR -1
R -1
RBI -1
SO 2
TB -1

PITCHING
BB 0.5
Bk 1
ER 2
H 0.5
HB 1
HR 1
K -2
L 10
W -5
WP 1

I ran these against the 2013 MLB stats to work out the scoring because the Lahman database hasn't been updated yet. Link to Google Sheet. The best (worst) hitters in 2013 were B.J. Upton, Starlin Castro and Adeiny Hechavarria. The best (worst) pitchers in 2013 were Lucas Harrell, Joe Saunders and Scott Diamond. Bad hitters and pitchers are pretty comparable points-wise in the system. The hitting points over-rewards strike outs a bit but we're limited by stats in the Fantrax free tier. I'm happier with the way pitching points work out. Guys who take the ball every fifth day and suck are very valuable, as they should be.

On the other side, the worst (best) performers of 2013 (Cabrera and Scherzer) racked up negative points that were in same range as Upton and Harrell's positive contributions. This has no bearing on how the league works but I'm anal about scoring systems.

As for transactions, it looks like Fantrax supports monthly ones. I'm proposing FCFS roster moves on the first of each month to allow owners to replace players who are injured or more likely designated for assignment.

Fangraphs has 2014 stats that can be exported to a spreadsheet and manipulated from there. I'll try to play around with that in the next few days if I get a chance.

The hitting system does seem to "reward" strikeouts a little heavily but maybe that's unavoidable.

Looks pretty good.

150+ pts: 22 pitchers , 40 hitters.

100-150 pts: 35 pitchers, 91 hitters

50-99.5 pts: 84 pitchers, 226 hitters

Seems like a big enough player pool...

The trouble is there aren't that many negative hitter outcomes that get tracked. Fantrax charges to use OUTS as a category so I substituted a half-point per AB which is free and makes very little difference in the outcome. We could give points for ERR but this might give middle infielders too much of a bump.

I decided to stick with 2 points for a strikeout because it keeps guys like Trumbo and Chris Carter in the mix.

Here is an idea for salary, instead of having a salary cap, have a salary minimum. Your roster must be made of of at least $XX million based on whatever their 2015 Salary is.

I'm in favor of points for this reason. The tricky part with roto is that counting categories can be won with good players just on volume, while average categories can be won with benchwarmers. And salaries are an unnecessary layer of complexity. Points keeps us focused on the worst regulars.

I'm kind of fascinated by players who could have value both in this league and a regular fantasy league, wiping out all their positive contributions in a sea of whiffs.

2014 stats from Fangraphs added to the Google Doc, in case anyone wants to analyze how the scoring system worked last year or just laugh at how terrible Kevin Correia is.

I tweaked the batter scoring

BATTING
AB 0.75 (was 0.5)
BB -1
CS 3
GIDP 4 (was 3)
HR -1.5 (was -1)
R -1.5 (was -1)
RBI -1.5 (was -1)
SO 1.5 (was 2)
TB -1

You can compare the results in the Google sheet. Most of the really bad guys are at the top of both lists, but the scoring change is significant for power hitters who strike out a lot. In the old system, you could probably do pretty well just by picking players who whiff a lot. This isn't as good a strategy in the revised system.

I think it's a minor improvement although the lack of categories for negative outcomes is a major limitation. But at least the players who had the lowest OPS in real-life all come out near the top of the adjusted rankings, which wasn't the case before.

Updated the 2014 hitters on the sheet. Changes definitely look positive - Ian Desmond in the top 10 was sticking out and this moved him down to 27.

A small negative for SB might be nice, but it might throw off the total points balance which is pretty good right now.

I went with -1/3 for SB/CS because of the old Bill James adage that SB are a net negative unless there's a ~70% success rate.
