Visiting the Philippines (1 Viewer)

My company has me going to the Philippines(Manila) for 4 weeks starting Feb. 12th. During travel, I will be in Tokyo for 13 hours(overnight).

Any experiences from anyone? Advice?

Watch your wallet there though in all seriousness. There are gangs of kids that pretty much just spend all day robbing tourists. Don't take anything with you that you value, leave that #### at the hotel.

Angel City and wrap it up.
I knew this subject would come up, and lets get it clear: I'm married, and I will not cheat on my wife.

Besides hookers and drugs, what advice does the FBG populance offer?

I will be going with a co-worker who has been there 3 other times, so I have a guide of sorts. He has told me about the restaurants, and I am looking forward to the food. Also, he said the locals love to drink! I'm on board with that too!

Yup, I will! Thanks DD! I think I will use a neck security wallet. My father had his pocket picked when on vacation in Italy, and I don't need that aggravation.

You flying through Narita Airport (NRT). If so you are a good 90 minutes away from most places in Tokyo. Between getting through security, transportation, and rechecking in at airport, you will only have 7-8 hours free but you may want to sleep. Narita itself has hotels, but about the only activity there is a mall. Also keep in mind the subway system shuts down from I think 1am to 5 am. Roppongi offers the best night life for foreigners. Or if your flight is a bit later in the morning, like around 10am, you may be able to do the fish market and get some awesome sushi. But that is closed on Sunday's and holidays.

ETA: This girl did a 6 hour layover in Narita and did quite a bit. However, you are overnight so you may not be able to sitesee as much, depending on how much daylight you will have.

The traffic in this country is ridiculous, especially in the Metro Manila area. It literally can take you 2+ hours to travel as little as 10 miles so plan accordingly.

Tokyo:

1. Robot Restaurant...GO!!!

2. Tokyo Tower (Eiffle Tower of Asia)

3. Senso-ji Temple (you can also view skytree tower)

4. Revisionist musuem at the imperial palace(bombing of Peral Harbor is not mentioned/.did not occur) - fascinating and horrifying all at once

Dont drink san miquel light (philipino beer), stick with the non light version of san miquel, tastes way better.

Gearing up. Leave Thursday afternoon, have 13 hour layover in Tokyo, and will arrive in Manila Saturday early afternoon. Will be back state side March 16.

Hanging out in Tokyo, and wishing Homer was with me. Tons of school girls in uniforms running around

I'm not a light beer type guy, but thanks!
Then drink Red Horse beer.
I see this Red Horse beer in the mini-mart. Will give it a go.

This place is nuts! The traffic, as said above, is absolutely insane. When it is not stop-n-go traffic, pedestrians take their lives in their hands trying to walk anywhere near the road(no sidewalks!).

I started a blog to share with my friends and family. Here is my first entry:

Planes, trains, and gridlock

Take off from Greenville airport delayed about 30 minutes due to ‘wind sheer’ in Chicago. Very bumpy ride. Lots of turbulence. Sat next to a guy who was a traveling salesman(sold the machine that made boxes). He has been in just about every corner of the world. Showed me his passport, and he has been in Turkey, Argentina, Australia, multiple times in Spain. At least 15 times each to Japan and China. Oddly, he’s never been to the Philippines.

The 21st century gadgets on a Japanese aircraft are awesome! Each seat has its own ‘in-seat’computer, and you can IM other seats. The remote they provide had very small buttons though, and not worth the effort. Another feature is a camera in the nose of the plane so I can see what the pilot is seeing. In flight snack has “Expanion medicine” listed as an ingredient. What the hell is that? Pretty solid selection of movies and tv. Stewardesess changed clothes during different parts of the flight. Felt like I was being waited on by OCD clothes fanatics who forgot to pack their meds.

We flew into Narita airport, and had 12 hours to get to Haneda airport we were leaving from. My co-worker and I were happy to find many Japanese know English. I’m not sure how were would have been able to find our way to another airport if they hadn’t. Even with that advantage, we bungled a few times getting there. This was mostly due to us pretending to be the ******* love children of the three stooges and the keystone cops. At one point, after having gotten on the wrong bus for the third time in a row, I swear I heard benny hill music. After the 13 hour flight, we were exhausted and each got a hotel room at the airport. The “hotel” room was 7 feet by 4 feet. Comfy, huh?

After finally arriving in Manila, we walked to the customs area and got in line with the other 100 or so passengers. After 2 minutes, some airport security guy comes over and yanks us out of line. Thinking I was going to get shot for some mortal sin my Grandfather did during WWII, he instead led us to the ‘Diplomat’ area, and was ushered thru the process. I sheepishly glanced at the poor shlubs still in line, grabbed my passport, and slinked off. This was my first experience of what will continue to happen: Americans are treated differently in the Philippines. Almost as if I were royalty. This ‘king’ is not used to the weight of a crown. Alas, I am a minority, and stick out like a six foot thumb with large neon American Flags sticking out his ###.

At this point, I’ve only been here 2 days. Two things continue to stun me. First, the traffic. Go ahead and google random videos of “Manila traffic”. Go ahead. I’ll wait. What you are seeing is not abnormal. It took us an hour to travel about 2 miles. This is an everyday scene. Crazy traffic. Those ‘Jeepneys’ are everywhere, and are the main public transportation of the populance. Second, the food here is #######g out of this world good! Crazy good, and stupid cheap.

Remember the very bumpy ride I was telling you about earlier? Yeah, I come to find out it was due to typhoon class winds we passed thru north of Japan. I’m glad they didn’t tell us at the time.

My second blog post:

Frenchin' cows

I ate tongue today. The meal that tastes you back!

All kidding aside, the food is incredible in the Philippines. Every single Asian culture is represented here, as well as many others. I ate at a Persian restaurant yesterday, and then today a Philippino/Mexican fusion place. Sometimes they seem a bit misguided though: The hotel I am staying in offers breakfast consisting of an omlette station, pancakes, spam, hot dogs, cream of mushroom soup, rice, and spaghetti with red sauce. I stuck to an omlette and pancakes, thank you very much.

McDonalds is said to have some of the best fried chicken around, and one of their best sellers is a side of spaghetti(they seem to have an infatuation with spaghetti!) with meals. KFC is proud to serve 'Unlimited Gravy'. By the way, everyone delivers. Yes, if you don't want to leave your house/hotel room/etc., you can get a #2 meal super sized delivered. Actually, just about all stores deliver. A couple of beers are only a phone call away! They need to bring this to the good 'ole US of A!

Side note: Due to a slight language barrier and bad phone reception, it may save you time and embarrassment to just walk down to the pharmacy for anti-itch cream. Just sayin'...

Where are you staying? Have you tried halo halo yet? Looks terrible but I love it.
I'm in Manila, at the Privato hotel on Shaw Blvd., in Pasig city.(right on the border of Kapitolyo).

halo halo is pretty good! I'm liking the street vendor type of eats! Good stuff.

No, not yet. I've asked my local co-workers abut sisig, and they promised me an opportunity to try it soon.

I think so. I'm letting my co-workers help me chose places that they know are safe(i.e. - safer than most).

I'm looking forward to trying this! I'm a bit adventurous when it comes to eating, so I'm game!

Are there Jollibee restaurants everywhere?
Yes, there are! They're food is ok, I suppose.

One thing I've noticed: All the fast food places have spaghetti as a side, or as a main meal. Filipinos are obsessed with spaghetti!

I'm really loving this place near my hotel, "Kanto Freestyle Breakfast 24/7" in Pasig City(within the area known as 'Kapitolyo'.

My co-worker had Eggs Benedict and a latte coffee, and I had the Spanish Anchovies Benedict with a coffee. With service charge(tip), the total for everything was $7.11 US dollars.

Insane price for an outstanding meal!

Any WW2 stuff yet?
Yeah, the bases here are interesting.

I also had a chance to visit the Philippines Natural Museum. This country will absorb any culture that it comes in contact with(be it being invaded, visited, etc.). Huge mix of cultural influences of Japan, Spain, Muslim, and American.
