Just doing my due diligence here. If I get a certain job I may be moving to NC. It would be a regional job and I would need to live along the I-95 corridor in NC. Raleigh would be somewhat central, but south of Raleigh would still be in the meat of the region. Very little north of Raleigh except for a narrow strip along 95.

So far I have looked at Clayton and someone mentioned Hope Mills. I have 3 kids and would want a decent school system. Don't really want to live in Raleigh, but am ok with suburbs. Currently live on 6 acres of kid-friendly awesome. Woods, creek, large fishing pond, playground, garden, fruit trees, the works. The wife thinks we are too far out in the sticks. We are 30 minutes from a good-sized town and hour from two small cities. So I guess I am looking for the burbs.

Just need some direction on where to continue my research. Odds are that I will not be receiving an offer, but you never know. Help. Thanks.

ETA: Also up for a non-regional job in Union County, which I also probably will not get. So any info about Union County, Charlotte area is welcome.

why would you have to move there? Seems a bit odd. Not much in the area you describe though.

where do you live now

It's a feet on the ground everyday type of job, and part of the deal is a requirement to live within the region.

Right now I live in the eastern panhandle of WV.

Hope Mills is entirely too far from Raleigh.

Dunn, NC is decent. Might be up your alley. We live in northern Fayetteville and like it a lot.

Take a look around the Pine Forest school district in Fayetteville. Good schools. PM me if you get serious and want more detailed recommendations.

Lots of great family friendly burbs of Raleigh - Cary, Apex, Holly Springs to the west and south, North Raleigh, Wake Forest to the North among others.

I have a friend who built a house in Clayton (want to say Riverwood development?) and moved in this summer. Nice area. He has kids but they are young so haven't started school yet. But I imagine school played a major factor in determining where they bought in the Raleigh burbs. Raleigh is about a 20 minute drive IIRC.

Probably not going to have much trouble upgrading the school district going from WV to Research Triangle.

Actually, our area has top rated schools. We are a suburb of D.C.

I will know more next week. I will certainly take you up on the offer of more info. I was initially attracted to Fayetteville based on a shorter trip to the beach.

We just recently moved back here from Missouri. From my experience --

Cary - When we were looking the market here was on an uptick. Still is supposedly. Everything in our price range with what we were looking for went in 1 day on the market. Not a lot of land there. Good schools though.

Raleigh - Kind of the same thing as Cary here.

We ended up in Wake Forest. Good schools - close enough to Raleigh to do the things we want to do. Decent lot - nowhere near the acreage you have now but i think that will be tough to replicate unless you go further out. Then you get to schools with lower standardized scoring.

Feel free to PM me. Will be glad to share the experiences we had recently.

Lots of growth in Union County. Excellent schools, although the school board argues about everything. Lots of land, for a price, and still 30-40 minutes from downtown Charlotte.

This is the area you should look at. Also Riverwood and the Cleveland School(where I live) are not bad options.

In these areas, you would be around 10 miles from 95 give or take.

Cary is nice but not close to I-95.

Wake Forest sounds like an option. Although, given what you have described (A preference to own a bit of land, wanting a bit cheaper cost of living) I would suggest looking east of Raleigh. Wilson is on 95. I don't know much about Wilson except that is has at least 1 great restaurant and 2 cool beer stores. Might be worth checking out.
