Drunk driver on the road... What do you do? (1 Viewer)

Footballguy Jr.
Was driving home on a highway and a car in front of me was in two lanes, swirving, and blatantly drunk... Went around and passed, but this ####### was dangerous to others on the road. Told my wife (who was also drunk) I wanted to call 911 bc this person was dangerous to others around, she said to leave it alone, so I did.

What do you do in this situation? Leave it alone, or call law enforcement (In my younger days I would call this response a huge ##### move, but as I'm older and wiser, this move could save an innocent life)?

Its pretty simple now to call and say you see a car blatantly swerving on such and such road. They'll usually send some one in the area.

20 years ago, they'd laugh at you.

911 with zero hesitation. I've called a couple times in the past. No idea of the result though.

If there was heavy traffic, put your warning lights on and follow until cops catch up. Also, you are warning others behind you by doing this.

Have called 911 3 times on drunk drivers.

In one case I followed the guy for about 5 miles and got to see the cop come and pull him over.

Call 911 for sure if he's swirving all of the place. That's pretty sad your wife would rather look the other way...guy could've killed someone.

She was drunk and not really paying attention... If she was sober, she would've said to call. I should've, this one is on me, not her.

Call 911.

Also, don't get in front of them unless you've got plenty of clear road ahead to get well away from them. You don't want to get caught at the next light and have them crash into you.

Leave it alone?

What if that driver hits another car and maims or kills another?

You call 911 and report that ####.

Seriously? And you didn't overrule her and make the 911 call?

Now I read that your wife was drunk and not really paying attention and yet you didn't call...Who wore the dress tonight when you went out? You or her?

When I was in college I was on a road trip with several buddies when we were passed by a drunk driver. I insisted that we pull over to call 911 and everyone else in the car made fun of me for the rest of the trip. Eff those guys and eff anyone who doesn't call 911 when they see a drunk driver.

If you see something, say something.
To whom? The dirty cops? Why would he do that?

All hail the REAL heroes in our society: bureaucrats, politicians, soldiers, cops, the mainstream media and all other enemies of freedom. Bow down to them, lick their boots and kiss their asses. Because without them, you would be nothing.

GOT HEEM.
Because the cops are only needed when I need them. Otherwise they are dirty ####s.

I did the same once - gave as much info as I could and as I was about to get off my exit, there was a state trooper in the median waiting for him to pass so he could pull him over.

Oh SNAP!

So you left the decision making to your drunk wife? Looks like the right thing to do was over-ruled by your desire to get some.

If you really believe the guy is drunk and danger then definitely call 911.

Following him is incredibly stupid though.

Disagree. I think it's generally better to leave a disruptive driver in the past, where he's no danger to you (other than the traffic light situation you give) than to stay behind him, where he's a constant danger.

Lots of assumptions on drunkeness. Could have been texting, spilled coffee, dropped something, sleepy, arguing, racing to hospital...and many other things. I move along and mind my own business because I truly do not know. I am assuming and not trained to do a cops job. Oh and you could have killed someone picking up the phone and calling 911. Hands free i hope or I will tell on you.

This happened to me at the end of last summer. Called 911, told them it wasn't an emergency but there was clearly a drunk truck and told them the street and direction he was heading along with what the color and model of the truck. They didn't require us to stay on the line, and we quickly passed him and got the hell away. It wouldn't make any sense to drive around someone who can't drive, so we passed him ASAP and took an alternative route.

i have cops im friends with that drive drunk all the time when not on duty...its an interesting world we live in
I was at a retirement party on Thursday and was one of a few without a drink in their hand. Most people were drinking wine or high octane beers. I recall wondering how many would be legally drunk for the ride home. Multiply this by the countless bars and clubs and you can see there is a scary number of people on the rode who shouldn't be driving. And the police know this too...

Given the effect of food and time, one should be able to consume a moderate amount of alcohol and be OK. However, it isn't hard to cross the line. I've crossed it certainly... as probably has the majority of the population. Now we're older and wiser and more aware of our situations. I would be extraordinarily cautious on a Friday or Saturday evening. I've hit three police road blocks where every vehicle was stopped and the driver questioned. One of those was returning from a Christmas Party where I was the designated driver.

As far as the play here... I wouldn't pass them unless I had a clear opportunity to distance myself quickly. Reporting them would be a matter of degree. Yes if it was as blatant as this situation.

Wtf would you leave it alone? Im so flabbergasted why that would be anyones response. Like whats the downside of calling 911?

Called on a driver on PCH that was probably drunk. Was driving like a maniac using the center median to pass people. Ended up seeing him pulled over. Not sure if he was actually busted, but at least it scared him enough to slow him down. It always amazes me how many people are killed on PCH and yet people still drive the way they do.

What he said: You want me to call the d i c ks on that drunk driver?

What she heard: You want my #### or some muff divin'?

Her reply: Leave it alone.

I give him the address to OPM's house and tell him there's a great party going on over there.

If he spilled coffee on himself it'll be a 2 minute traffic stop and dude is on his way.Plus, it takes no special training to know what drunk driving looks like.

Call and report. I've done it twice... in both cases the person was swerving across multiple lanes.
