Andre Johnson given permission to seek trade (1 Viewer)

Texans have given AJ permission to seek a trade... They intend to release him if a trade partner isn't found. He is scheduled to make $10M next season.

34 by the start of next season, one would think he has some left in the tank a good QB could help him improve his 2014 numbers (85/936/3)

Got to think he is looking at a contender? Seattle, NE, etc.

I also think green bay will be a real possibility. With cobb walking likely, the receiving corps would be incredibly young and unproven without a vet. I know thompson avoids fa for the most part, but he signed peppers last year and andre johnson is his exact counter part on the other side of the ball. Meets all the bells and whistles of Peppers from last off season.

Anyone want to speculate where he'll end up?
If his motivation is the post-season and a SB shot, the biggest fantasy implications would be in GB or NE. Seattle or Baltimore wouldn't excite me. AJ could be cheaper and certainly demand a shorter contract than Cobb. NE seems to target guys like this but I wouldn't think they have the cap space.

Pats likely cutting Amendola leave them pretty thin at WR, AJ is a possibility. They aren't gonna pay much though.

Colts and Chargers have plenty of cap space - AJ would be an upgrade for either of them. Both should also be competitive.

In before NEP!!??

I doubt the Pats cut Amendola. I believe they still like him (especially after his post season play). Will likely restructure and take less money to stick around.

AJ seems like a perfect Ravens candidate. I know Steve Smith is there but everyone involved knows Smith and AJ have about 2 years max left. So it's a money investment over a short period. I could see him ending up there. Just seems like their MO.

He'll get cut and who knows where he'll end up. Certainly isn't going to be paid $10 mill next year by anyone.

Andre's chasing a ring and a good qb to play with. Biggest Super Bowl contender with a need is Seattle. Boom, make it happen

balt let boldin go because of cap issues when they signed flacco --- I'd have to look it up, but I doubt they've gained a ton of room there, and you'd need to accomodate his contract in a trade before you could get him to rework it, if that's even possible.

there was a lot of talk about trading him to nep at the beginning of the year, and while it'd be currently impossible, thing swould change if they happen to extend revis.

that said, it would still really come down to aj taking less money, because I doubt the pats want him at that price even if revis extended tomorrow

aj has always been a shake the tree kind of guy, so we'll see if he'd changed his attitude.

PHI would be interesting. Given they traded for Sproles last year, obviously they're willing to bet on older guys who still have something. They need an upgrade over Cooper, and of course even more desperate if Maclin is not resigned before FA.

LOL @ Seattle not "exciting" you if motivation is a SB shot. Which team has been in the past two Super Bowls?

Think he's talking about from a fantasy perspective.

Colts.makes so much sense it almost hurts..

bye bye Reggie Wayne, hello AJ..

Rams, Az, Cincy, Pitt, Pats, Giants ( he's far better than Randle and Cruz, combined), Dallas, Denver..

of those, I particularly like Denver and Dallas, he would thrive in either situation..

Colts is my fave suggestion here.

I suppose we'll have to wait and see if he's looking for $ or to be on a winner. Not every player wants to help young guys learn the craft, some just want to play. We'll have to see that too.

I would like to see him tutor Brian Quick because I think Quick's starting to show some toughness and fight just like a young Andre.

I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to play opposite a stud for a change. Let someone like Jones, Green, Calvin etc get the attention instead of him.

Couple years too late
Don't think so. He has the type of body where he can play 3 more years probably at a very high level.

I know people will look at this and not see the same type of guy as one of the human highlight films guys but people need to keep in perspective just how truly shackled he has been in terms of QB and team philosophy.

Unfortunately, the biggest barrier to him now is there isn't a great fit where he could be that AJ Green on the Bengals or that one man show down in Carolina because I'm assuming he wants to go somewhere to win a SB and those places don't have a mindset where he will be fed ad naseum.

I don't think he's a good fit for the Colts considering the Colts want to do different things. Seattle or San Fran look like places he might fit while fitting his needs.

The two places I would be excited about from a fantasy perspective: San Diego and Dallas. He still has the wheels to make some noise with Rivers and they seem like the type of team that would keep it rolling with him once they got it going.

Dallas is my sneaky pick because he stays in Texas, the Cowboys would LOVE to have a guy that can block and has the size of AJ, the Cowboys want to run more two TE sets so I'm thinking of him as a hybrid role kind of guy. WR that lines up in the Two TE packages. Witten has always been great but AJ can do all those Witten things from the WR spot. I think this would be a GREAT signing.

Three factors: where would Andre want to go, where would the Texans not want to trade him, and how much salary cap space does the team getting him have.

To me that leaves two teams: Seattle and Philly. Both have the cap space, both are outside of the AFC, and both have teams that could contend for a superbowl. However, because Philly's QB situation is a bit more muddled and because Seattle has shown that they can get to the Superbowl and because Seattle is desperate for WR help, I think Seattle is the likely landing spot.

Indy would be a possibility if they were not in the Texans division. They have the cap space, a great QB, and could use a compliment to T.Y. Hilton. However, the Texans worst nightmare is having Johnson succeed in Indy, especially in games against the Texans.

New England seems like a possibility but they are currently $12 million over the cap, so unless they can free up significant cap space, they cannot afford Johnson.

The Cowboys also do not appear to have the cap space to get Johnson.

I think any team trading for him is likely going to demand a restructured contract. Right now, he is set to make $10.5 million this year and $11 million next year in base salary. The Texans absorb all of the deferred money on his contract when he is traded. I could see a team paying him somewhere between $6 to $8 million for each of the next two years, guaranteed. Fitzgerald basically got $22 million total guaranteed over the next two years, so Johnson getting between $12 and $16 million over the next two years sounds about right.

By the way, I think whatever team gets him is getting a great player. Given the right situation of QB and offense, I think his numbers will far exceed what he did this year. He has not really declined over the past two years, rather his QB's have been horrible. He may be a little bit slower, but he still runs great routes and still can catch the ball.

I assume you mean by this that he is always looking to renegotiate to make more money. That is not actually accurate. Andre's problem was he was using a family member (his uncle) to negotiate his second contract in 2007. The Texans got Andre to sign an 8 year deal which was ridiculous because by 2010 Andre was significantly under paid for his position and his performance. The Texan's really had to redo his contract to keep him happy. After that though, it was the Texans who kept coming to Andre to restructure his contract so they could stay under the cap. This happened at least two times (maybe three).

Yes, Andre stayed out of OTA's and training camp last year because he was unhappy with his situation and the team's unsuccessful attempt to get a good starting QB. He was worried that the QB situation would be bad, his numbers would suffer, and then the Texans would cut him when he appeared to have no value. This is pretty much how it played out this year.

If he gets a decent contract in a situation where he is on a winning team and can make a significant contribution, he will be as happy as a clam. I don't think his attitude needs adjusting at all.

I'm guessing a trade is unlikely due to his contract. Just wait until he is released and bargain with him then (of course, if there is enough buzz created, maybe somebody ponies up so they don't risk losing him if they think they want him that bad).

Let a 24 year old Cobb walk to sign an over the hill AJ?

Andre got $45M for 5 years, I wouldn't exactly call that underpaid.

Seattle makes the most sense. If GB loses Cobb, GB makes just as much sense for AJ. The Pats cannot afford him.

If he's not chasing a ring I'd say Miami makes a lot of sense if they get rid of Wallace. Makes sense in that it's a need for the Dolphins, Andre could still have a shot at being the #1 WR and he'd return home.

If he wants to play on a contender and still have the chance to be the #1 WR then Seattle, Baltimore, and Colts offer that chance. I guess you could add NE in this mix but not sure he'd be as involved as he'd like with them as he might be third in targets. Rams and 49'ers also make sense in this category. On the 49'ers side it's a matter of if you think they are still contenders. My guess is they are just a year older with an inferior head coach but better health and less distractions might get them back in the mix. And the Rams with a healthy Bradford would IMO be legit contenders and Andre would have a chance to be their #1.

He played for Kubiak and Kyle Shanahan most of his career so that coaching tree makes sense. However don't see Denver or Atlanta being remotely interested and off the top of my head can't recall if anyone else from that staff is an OC. Am I missing someone?

A good number of places he could go and at least compete to be the #1 WR if that and getting paid is his goal, but most have unproven QB's and are not contenders.

My best guess is Baltimore. They will have a need if they don't resign Torrey, and maybe even if they do. It would offer Andre a chance to play with a competitor and a chance at being the #1 WR. Lastly, Trestman seemed to have a preference for bigger bodied WR's with Chicago and Baltimore does not have a proven WR like that on their roster.

Link below that is posted on Rotoworld now. Certainly does not look like really wanted to go so much as he was left with no other choice. If the article is accurate it's kind of stunning that they would tell Andre he might not start. Other than that being kind of a harsh way to treat a player of his magnitude but also makes me wonder if the Texans don't a FA WR target in mind.

I read that too and thought it sad but it also reiterated to me that the NFL is a business and there is no loyalty and none should be expected. Jaded maybe but it's reality.

Who on the current roster would start over him other than Hopkins? Are we thinking they may go after Maclin/Cobb, or go after after a WR ar 16, because after Hopkins they have nothing a WR on their current roster.

No one on the current roster would start over Andre. The only way he would not start on this team is if they add a significant FA. If they don't add a significant WR I could still see cutting him for cap reasons but not because he would not start as a number 2 receiver on the Texans. There has to be another domino to fall or the Texans are BS'ing Andre which is not a good look since he is their greatest player (until Watt plays long enough to supplant him).

Yeah, its a business and all that is well known but, man, its a shame to see one of the guys you think of as being a class act get treated like that. But, I suppose, if all that is true, in a sense it is refreshing. Coach being VERY upfront about the process and early in the process. At least this gives him a chance to go somewhere early.

What I really take from this is it makes me think the Texans are in a heap of trouble if this is their thoughts on talent evaluation because even at 75%, Andre Johnson is a better teammate/talent that A LOT of guys around the league and the teams that win have an abundance of talent.

This isn't a scenario like in Denver where its time for Wleker to go or Indy where Reggie needs to step aside. Any time you get rid of a player, you have to ask "ok, whos' going to replace the talent we just lost?" The Texans do good to start two WRs, period. I don't see the next big thing pushing up their roster and even if they use the draft, this becomes a very young WR corps with no veteran QB presence. That is ALWAYS a terrible combo.

:violin:

Dallas could afford if they wanted with restructuring....not happening tough. They just resigned Cole Beasley their WR3.

Reality is any FA $$$ need to go to DE or maybe secondary help.

I think I am in the minority, but is Andre Johnson really a valuable commodity at this point? He looked awful this year, and mediocre other than 1 monster game in 2013.

Just looking at FA WRs, I'd rather have:

Cobb

Maclin

Smith

Crabtree

Britt

Shorts

Honestly other than name value, I'm not sure Andre is a much better player than a guy like Brian Hartline or Stevie Johnson, and he'll likely cost triple what they do.

He'll cost more but AJ is a player who can put a team over the top.

As fun as he'd be in Carolina and the Panthers do fit the bill of "close to contention", I don't know that he's affordable with their other needs. But it's not like they're going to sign a great OT, so maybe.

Would love to see Miami trade Wallace for him. Won't happen, but maybe through releasing Wallace and trading a late pick?

Seattle has to be in the discussion.
