The Ultimate Prank Call? Fake ESPN Pres. Fires People Over the Phone (1 Viewer)

A crank caller impersonated the president of ESPN when calling WTEM management in DC in an attempt to cancel a new morning radio show that would have:
(1) pushed Mike and Mike to a secondary station, and
(2) driven Andy Pollin's show off the air

And it worked.

WTEM fell for it and the new show got cancelled days before it aired and after extensive marketing/hype. The GM of the station resigned in protest of the "decision".

But now, thanks to the Redskins GM (of all people), the crank call has been unwound and the show has been un-cancelled and will start Monday. The Washington Post originally reported that the Redskins engineered the show's demise. But no, it was a yet-to-be-identified prank caller.

Got that?

This puts Captain Janks to shame....

So now the question is who is the crank caller? Here's hoping it was someone from Mike and Mike.

Bingo.

Snyder and Allen were getting killed over this locally, which is even more remarkable when you consider their usual status is "the guys who completely destroyed a beloved local institution and turned it into a laughingstock." The radio exec claiming he was fooled is taking one for the team.

If it all was an inside job.....all the way to fabricating a story about fake calls from ESPN's president, what a wonderful story it would make if an investigative journalist could prove it.

My guess is that they did get a prank call, but that the call wasn't the reason that they shut down the show and then brought it back to life a couple weeks later. I think it just made for a convenient and (amazingly) less embarrassing explanation than the truth.

I have no particular reason to think that other than watching Dan Snyder conduct his affairs over the last couple decades. That's exactly the sort of thing you'd expect him to do- throw a hissy fit over a guy who was critical of the Skins getting a radio show on his channel, then find a way to reverse himself and change the narrative when the negative PR starts to pile up.
