Trade in strategy (1 Viewer)

I've been looking over past drafts and comparing that with my rankings a bit lately and started wondering if anyone has any "trade-in" strategies that they use frequently? I'm starting to think that based on my rankings if a guy slips ~5 spots in a rookie draft then I should trade in. Seems simple enough but would it necessarily be worth it? I'm not sure. So does anyone have certain rules or strategies that they use for trading into a spot?

This is actually one of the things I use tiering for.

If there is only one player remaining of a tier I will look to try to move up so I can select the last player from that tier.

Similarly if I have an opportunity to trade down, I don;t mind doing so as long as the drop does not take me out of the current tier of players.

Bia's strategy is solid, but I would add the disclaimer not to move up for a guy in a tier if you're not a big fan. So if you have a tier 3 and Yeldon and Coates are all that's left but you smell bust on Coates and Yeldon goes don't make a move up for a guy you don't like in Coates.

You know if you're going to move up you're going to have overpay some, use multiple picks from lower down the draft and/or next year's pick so make it a guy you have solid convictions about. I can live with my mistakes better when I go for a guy I really like. Still kicking myself for taking Marqise Lee in 2 leagues last year when I didn't like him at all! I also took Gio over Le'Veon in one league but I don't mind that one as I genuinely thought Gio was going to be awesome!

If you're seeing Coates as a bust why is he in your 3rd tier?

This one is tough. I can't say I have any sort of strategy, and whatever strategy I do have for this will fluctuate wildly from year to year.

The best generalization I can make is that I will NEVER trade a future 1st (any first from any team) for any current 2nd round pick. Barring an extreme example of a player falling to pick 2.01.

I WILL trade a future pick a round higher on occasion, say a future 3rd for a current 4th, if I think an available player is worth that.

It's a bad habit to get into though, because you are giving up value every time you do it, which isn't good in dynasty. That future 3rd you give up could be a player you value as a 2nd rounder, or you could trade it for later future 2nd to someone. Either way, to me, not a good strategy to consistently give up better picks for worse picks.

As for trading picks in the current draft for a higher pick, I have no problem with that. I would rather give up a mid 3rd and 4th to move into the late 2nd or early 3rd than give a future 2nd to do it.

I guess I'm just looking for general rules that other's may follow, like the last guy in a tier, or x amount of spots from your rankings. It's a tough battle to figure out year after year. When I put my rankings together I usually highlight some of the guys that I am a big fan of, so those are clear trade targets for me if I don't have a pick in that range. But as for the other guys where do you draw the line? Is the value too much to let him slide anymore even if you don't like the guy? Lets say for a minute that Coates slips to 3.01, you might feel an obligation to trade into that spot because of the value, but then again it's obvious that in that league the market for him specifically isn't what you may expect. So do you still do it considering you're not a fan of his? Like you pointed out, why trade in if it's for a guy you don't particularly like?

It's an example for examples sake but let's say most everyone else has Coates in their 2nd tier, I don't like him and move him down to my third, there comes a point where if I'm on the clock I'd take him over guys I rank below him but I wouldn't deal up for him because he's not a prospect I'm excited about, does that make sense?

Sure it does. Your previous post didn't make sense to me.

I think a lot of it is based on feel, as unhelpful a comment as that is. You really have to know your league and how a player is probably valued by your league-mates. The same slipping player may make it to you in one league and not make it to you in another. I do, in general, like the "last guy in a tier" concept, though it's important to realize how radically different your rankings may be from public perception and league-adjusted market value. Last year I was really high on ASJ, but I didn't have to move up in any of my leagues to get him because the market didn't like him as much as I did. So I could still get him at what I perceived as a value without paying additional draft cost.
