Obscure Sports Moments That Really Bothered You (1 Viewer)

That was one of my best sports moments ever. So awesome.

Mine was when Damien Robinson tried to literally rip Aaron Brooks' head off. Kyle Turley stepped in and prevented what could have been a catastrophic injury. Sadly the media attention focused almost entirely on what Turley did afterward and ignored what was, IMO, the dirtiest, ugliest play in NFL history.
Yes it was. Wouldn't exactly call one of the most famous playoff hockey games ever "obscure" but when I'm feeling down after a Rangers loss like last night, I'm happy to read all about it.

Mine relates to the de facto Big East Championship game in 2006...either a ball through the hands of Rutgers WR James Townsend in the end zone, or a bull#### call of "runner down" on Steve Slaton that negated a fumble and a Rutgers recovery deep in West Virginia territory. Either puts Rutgers in a BCS bowl game.

Bills 41, Oilers 38. January 3, 1993. Largest comeback in NFL history. Halftime score was 35-3. We thought it was a blowout, so I took my wife to the park to go rollerblading. In the car on the way home we listened to the call in OT.

Why ya gotta go all lawyer? Just see where the thread goes, and accept it, eh?

Technically it was 28-3 at the half; Reich threw a pick-six less than 2 minutes into the 3rd quarter to make it 35-3 ;)

My Bantam B team gave up last second goals (literally) to lose the game TWICE in a week to East Grand Forks.

Broke my brand new Christian stick over the crossbar after the second one. :hot:

I have it in my head that Sergei Zubov was paid off to throw the series for the Penguins against Florida in the 1995-1996 playoffs.

Fog Bowl. Eagles had a real shot that year and they were a come from behind team. Fog totally screwed them. I don't know how far they would have gone but I felt pretty ripped off. Once it rolled in passing game was done for the day. Rididculous.
As a kid, I remember thinking "They have to replay that, right? No way that can be how the game is allowed to stand." I was in complete denial.

There was a called strike on Marty Barrett during the fifth inning of an August '87 game that I thought was a bit inside.

The play that has always bothered me was Kent Hrbek pulling Ron Gant off of first base in Game 2 of the 1991 World Series. I think it was just one of the first bad calls against one of my teams in a major sporting event during my childhood.
Didn't happen. It was Gant's momentum and he couldn't stop.
You couldn't me more incorrect.
No you are.
Nuh uh. You are.

Disagree.

Jack Squirek intercepting Joe Theismann in Super Bowl XVIII. Maybe too famous but the 11 year old me was devastated.
And the Redskins had a punt blocked in the first quarter, I believe. And, down 21-3, the Redskins come out in the second half and get a Riggins TD. Comeback is on, baby...and then they miss the XP. And the famous big blow was the Marcus Allen run that still won't watch to this day.

Much more obscure was game 7 for the Caps vs Flyers in Ovechkin's first playoff appearance. After making a coaching change earlier in the season, the Caps went on a tear to win the division and make the playoffs in the last game of the season. Ovechkin had 65 goals in the regular season. They fight back from a 3-1 deficit to force a game 7 at home. Late in the third period of game 7, tied 2-2, Ovechkin stole the puck in the offensive zone and had a great opportunity to take a game-winning shot and chose to pass to Sergei Fedorov who just couldn't get his stick on the puck. They go to OT and lose.

I remember being on a trip for work, standing up in a sports bar with my hands raised when the puck was on Ovi's stick in that situation. I thought it was a slam dunk...and then he passed!!!

Edgar Martinez and Ken Griffey Jr. ending Mattingly's shot at a World Series. ETA - sorry not really obscure.

Gheorghe Muresan makes a movie with Billy Crystal and injures his foot during filming, ruining his career. Bullets were destined for greatness with that guy.

Patriots secondary collapsing with three starters and a backup cramping up or throwing up on the sidelines. Manning, who had played poorly in the first half and really the whole postseason, leads a second half comeback to win 38-34. After throwing 3 tds and 7 ints in four postseason games. Manning wins his one and only ring. Despite claims at the time, there was no investigation into whether the Colts turned up the heat in the rca.
That's one way to frame it.

As a Twins fan, I'm always waiting for this to get mentioned. Best World Series ever.

ETA: I laughed pretty hard when the Twins had a bobblehead day that depicted this event and Atlanta went ape#### all over again.

November 27th, 1993. The Swamp.

Hell of a game to that point versus Florida State. Spurrier had a 23-0 home record at that point. FSU was poised for a National Title shot. FSU had led by 20 and was dominating most of the game, but after a huge comeback, Florida was poised to ice the game in the 4th with a big 3rd and 10 at their own 21-yard line.

Putting up with the chants of a few obnoxious Noles fans who got student seats behing us somehow. They were chanting "Gay Goaters" (Go Gators variant) all game, but we had finally shut them up.

The Swamp was angry that day, my friend, like an old man trying to return soup. It was as loud as I ever remember it being.

Then Warrick Dunn happened. 79 Yards later, suddenly, it was as quiet as I've ever remembered it being. Scorchy was there, he remembers it as well as I do.

Second place would be Frank Sanders and the Auburn Comeback

watch it again
I did. Sorry Gant can't run the bases properly.
Or maybe if Lonnie "Skates" Smith could too.

Gant was pulling up as he entered first, how is that his momentum is still going forward?

^that doesnt matter, Kent hooks his calf and raises up. Pretty obvious from both angles
He kept his glove on him to tag him because he could tell Gant can't run the bases properly.
We're not still picking on Ron Gant, are we?
Nope. Hrbek for pulling Gant off the bag.
I dont understand how anyone can watch that clip and not see that. One must either be a complete homer or just trolling. I get the ump was shielded from the play and probably didnt see what happened but from both angles of that video its brutally obvious what went down.

A bit of both.

damnit I was hoping for a Thursday afternoon scrap

When a heavily favored Steelers team lost the AFC Championship game at home against Stan Hunphries and the mediocre Chargers. IIRC there were two long bombs that either connected or resulted in a massive penalty leading to 14 points for San Diego. Those two bombs knocked Pittsburgh out of the Super Bowl. Stan Humphries?!

That was so great working in Pittsburgh at the time and going into work Monday after telling everyone that the Steelers wouldn't win.

A lot of you sure don't understand the definition of "obscure."
I blame the OP. Game 7 of a Conference Final is hardly the definition of "obscure."
Semi-final. I doubt anyone outside of Detroit, Canada or degenerate gamblers would have any recollection

The 1994 strike that killed the Expos in Montreal.

The Expos were well in front and seemed destined to keep the championship in Canada for a third year when the strike ended it all.

The team would be dismantled, attendance never recovered and the team was moved.

Pedro still got his ring though

Among other things...

Would Gwynn hit .400?

Would Matt Williams, Griffey, Bagwell, Bonds get to 62 HR?

Could Maddux get his ERA under 1.50?

How would have the first year of the wild card go?

His daughter dog-sat for me once.
