FIFA officials arrested on corruption charges as World Cup inquiry launched

Their ticket to America:

United States law gives the Justice Department wide authority to bring cases against foreign nationals living abroad, an authority that prosecutors have used repeatedly in international terrorism cases. Those cases can hinge on the slightest connection to the United States, like the use of an American bank or Internet service provider.

Switzerland’s treaty with the United States is unusual in that it gives Swiss authorities the power to refuse extradition for tax crimes, but on matters of general criminal law, the Swiss have agreed to turn people over for prosecution in American courts.

why are tax dollars being wasted on this?

We are worried about an international sports body and ignore our own sins in our own financial institutions.

This is embarrassing and could lead to quite an international black eye.

Wrong, but thanks for playing.

FYI, there's a lot of info in the soccer thread on this story.

What? Corruption in a major international organization? Well, at least we still have the IOC as a bastion of ethics in their selection dealings.

:lmao:

What? A national government takes on a body everyone knows is corrupt? This is not exactly gunboat diplomacy here. :lmao:

Yeah, what the banks are doing is far worse than what FIFA is doing. But that doesn't mean FIFA isn't corrupt.

The real shame in all of this is that all of the hard work Blatter has done to improve soccer will be forgotten, because of all this corruption hidden deep within the organization, obviously well camoflaged from Sepp's vigilant eyes. An amazing legacy forever tarnished by the greed of others.

Read a good comment under the deadapin article,

"It feels like America won the World Cup"

He hasn't done nearly enough to improve soccer. Here's a hint: let 'em use their damn hands.
And pneumatic catapults.

We have countries in this world that support slavery, we trade and have diplomatic relations with countries that have major human rights violations, we are still recovering from a financial crisis that has never had any accountability... and yet we are chasing down guys that took some envelopes because apparently our envelopes werent fat enough to get a bid?

I guess the IOC is next, and I wonder how the NFL now justifies the freebies they demand from host cities for consideration. How is that not extortion in light of these actions?
