Broncos LT Ryan Clady likely to miss the season with torn ACL (1 Viewer)

Brutal, tough luck for Clady and the Broncos. At one time I thought he was one of the the top young LT in the game, with an ascendant Joe Thomas, than he ruptured his Achilles tendon, now this.

Who plays LT now? And if they have to borrow from another starting position, that could weaken the OL at two positions, in a domino effect. Manning has a quick release and is very smart about pre-snap reads, but the Super Bowl two years ago showed he is human and is susceptible to constant pressure like everybody else.

There was an article today (PFT, with Emanual quote?) alluding to DEN planning on running more. Maybe they recalibrate that to an even heavier percentage of run in the mix than intended before?

Trying to decide whether to downgrade all Denver offensive players in upcoming drafts.
as much as I don't like saying it, yes. except for Osweiler.

never predicting an injury, but if it's a deep enough draft, Brock becomes a worthwhile flier.

Michael Schofield replaced Clady in drills yesterday, FWIW. Elway seems to be high on Schofield, and i've heard rumors that getting Schofield PT was one right with Fox.

Is this the excuse to go to the Kubiak offense where they hand off 1000 times and seem to only throw to one WR?

That would be a colossal waste of Peyton's ability

Cecil is speculating just the opposite. Scrap the traditional Kubiak offense and go back to the gun/quick hitters.

A few things:

  • They did draft a couple youngsters (Sambrallo in the 2nd and C Max Garcia who played around the line at Florida/Maryland).
  • There are some OT FA's out there but even landing FA C Chris Myers would help the stability on the team since he was a 2x pro bowler playing under Kubiak in Houston.
  • There apparently was a little depth on the line that the team was high on before the draft and before Denver latches onto a talented FA
Or maybe that's just me trying to be optimistic...

Seems like the obvious answer.

Downgrade the running game, and (tentatively) upgrade the pass game...
I'd guess the opposite.

I thought the Broncos predominantly run up the middle and to the right and there would be a fear of a weak LT allowing a hit on Peyton
Entirely possible, but what gives them the best chance of winning? I say putting the ball in Payton's hand. I also think a lot of what we saw at the end of last year--conservative approach--was due more to Payton's leg injury than the line, but the line didn't help the situation.

one would think more dump-offs and quick passes to TE/RB and slot WR might be in order. It's really too bad they lost their best TE and slot WR. Don't think their RBs are particularly strong on screens either. If any QB can adjust, it's Peyton, but it will be interesting. Really would have liked to see what Heuerman would have brought to the offense.

Yea I think this is wrong. It's a downgrade all around, but much more for the passing game. Kubiak was already going to run the ball more - now with loosing Clady I think it shifts even heavier to the run. Much easier for o- linemen to run block than pass block.

Chris Clark is still there. He played well in 2013.
Move Clark from RT to LT and start 2nd rounder Ty Sambrailo at RT????
If the rookie second round RT is pressed into action, they could help him out by chipping the LDE with the rookie third round TE said to be a stong, natural, experienced blocker in pass pro.Wait.

That wouldn't make sense to me. I know as fantasy guys we all say do that (especially if we are Manning or Thomas owners and not Anderson owners), but in real life, why pay big money for a Head Coach if you aren't going to use him. They literally could get anyone cheap and just say "just do what Peyton says".

I guess if Manning was 30, I'd say "I can see it. It's a band-aide". But at his age, if the Broncos do that, then they essentially just set back the coaching stint of Kubiak and then next year its like starting over completely if Manning is gone.

I think this has the potential to be a fairly significant injury for them and for us in FF.

As someone with high hopes for Cody Latimer coming into this season (before Kubiak and before this), I'm starting to feel like the stars are definately NOT aligning........(sigh)

The importance of OL can't be understated. This will have a big impact on the Broncos and how they compensate will have a big impact on their season.

They signed Ryan Harris earlier today: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000494558/article/denver-broncos-sign-offensive-tackle-ryan-harris

Not a bad signing IMO. Took the starting RT job from Stephenson last season, wish the Chiefs would have re-signed him.
We have a local UFC guy named Cortez Coleman. His record is meh but he trains with some serious fighters and is not someone you'd want to mess with.

Anywho, he posted Ryan's pic on fb and said Ryan has spent time training with he and his friends.

Doesn't mean much for football I guess, but I like the idea of an OL training with UFC guys
