deck restore products (1 Viewer)

Anyone ever use these? I've read Olympic is the best of them but many say it peels after a year...

thoughts

I've tried Viagra, Cialis, and that Extendz stuff from the gas station. I prefer Cialis, take a dropper full and good to go all weekend.

I used the Rustoleum Deck Restore 2X on my deck this spring. Obviously it hasn't been on long enough to give a time tested review, but I can say that I had to do some touch up and it didn't cover in one coat as it claims (most spots were good, but there were some areas that needed a second coat).

I actually prefer to use a power washer every other year or so. Using finishes on a deck means you pretty much have to do so every year.

Deck restore or deck stain? I think the restore is a much thicker product than regular stain. I have used 6-7 different stains in 20 years. With my deck getting older last year I power washed it and the used Floods Cedar Tone and it turned out great. This year I just washed it and it still looks great. Will probably have to re-stain every other season.

I used the stuff from Sherwin-Williams last year. Good stuff, no peeling and my kids run around out there with bare feet with no worries now.

:blackdot: This was on my list of summer projects, but has been delayed. Anyone use the Behr product? I don't want to be doing this thing every couple years. It's over 500 square feet (not including the screened in part).

I've been power washing and staining my deck every 3 years or so for the last 13 years. At some point I will get Trex but I'm not spending the money now. My deck will be due next year so I'm starting the research.

just wondering if anyone has used the restore type products where it puts on that thick layer that makes "more than wood"

Rustoleum Deck Restore 2

I was thinking of Restore 4....is there a significant difference? Both have a warranty "if you do these steps, you won't ever have to do it again" sort of thing, right?
Biggest difference for me was the cost. 4x requires two coats, and covers less sq ft per gallon, so it is significantly more expensive that 2x (I was working on a budget, this might not affect some as much).

TWP products are top notch. It saved a deck I thought I had to scrap. It looks beautiful now. I had used the cleaner, brightener and stain. It took a decade of wear off the deck.

I'm actually in the process of re-staining (re-painting) my deck. I was lucky to have found the exact same solid stain that was used by the previous owner (Behr All-In-One Weatherproofing Solid Stain). Rustoleum's stuff hasn't had the best reviews, so that was out. Behr's Deck-Over has mixed reviews, but mostly not great from anyone who has to live through rough winters. The stuff is expensive and if it's not going to last 5-10 years then forget it. Plus I've heard it's a major PITA when it does fail because you have to scrape the entire deck, you can't just paint over it. I decided to go with the solid stain because it seemed like the most practical. I'm hoping it'll last at least a few years before it starts chipping. It's a lot cheaper than the Rustoleum or Deck-Over, but most importantly I can probably just sand and re-paint any areas that fade or chip over time instead of re-painting the entire deck. I had actually tested a small portion of my deck that had both bare wood (sanded, cleaned) and old stain/paint. I simply just painted over the area and the next day you honestly could not tell that it was just painted. Matched perfectly.

I'm not saying to not use Behr Deck-Over, but you're going to be pissed if the stuff doesn't last 5-10 years. The most important thing to re-staining or re-painting a deck is to PREP THE ENTIRE AREA. Use the liquid stripper and then the cleaner and make your deck look as fresh and brand new as possible BEFORE painting or staining. It'll save you a lot of trouble in the long-run.

I'll also add that the Behr All-In-One Weatherproofing Solid Stain received the best reviews from Consumer Reports. I still have to put the 2nd coat on my deck (stupid rain), but it looks great already.

What does TWP stand for? :bag:
Google says: Total Wood PreservativeWhat do I win?
Yep. My deck was in bad shape when I bought my current home. I went to a professional paint and wood working shop that mostly services professionals and asked if there was anything I could do. They said TWP was the best and the stuff at Home Depot was crap. Who knows how true it is, but the cleaner was insane. When I sprayed it (just sprayed, not with a power washer), dirt and mold that had created a thick solid skin on the deck liquified and ran off the deck like water revealing the actual wood which I was seeing for the first time.

Have had a couple decks. Last one I just power wash and put clear water repellant coating every year or two. If you want to stain, try to use a semi-transparent. If you use a solid stain it will probably start peeling within a year, especially if it gets a lot of sun.

Current deck is Fiberon composite so no maintenance.

My stain always looks good. After a couple years it needs retouch. Was just curious about these new textured finishes

I ended up going with the Sherwin Williams options for stripping, restoring and staining.  Very happy with the results, but man is stripping and restoring a #####...holy #### it sucks.

Didn't even last two years.  Plenty of bare spots this spring.  There were a few bare spots last year as well.  Will most likely strip, replace some boards, and put regular old stain down next time.

From everything I have ever seen, once you start with treating a deck, you pretty much have to do it every year.

I much prefer to just pressure wash it every few years.

Did the stripping process go ok?
Yeah....They say to just spray it on, let it soak in and brush off the excess, then spray with a hose.  I went with the pressure washer.  Their stripping solution is essentially lye.  I learned to put on long sleeve shirt and pants if I was going to use the pressure washer.
