Friends convince Spencer to stop terrorist attack on Amsterdam train (1 Viewer)

One is in critical condition:

A US Marine is in critical condition after tackling a Kalashnikov-wielding gunman on a train between Amsterdam and Paris, according to French media reports.

The serviceman, who has not been named, was one of two Americans - possibly embassy guards - who tackled the 26-year-old Moroccan national to the ground after hearing him load up a gun in the toilet.

In the scuffle, one of the Marines was shot and is now in a critical condition, France Info reports. He was airlifted to CHR hospital in Lille, France. The other Marine was stabbed, and has been taken to the central hospital of Arras with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Addressing reporters at the station in Arras, northern France, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve praised their bravery.

'I would like to express our gratitude to and admiration for these two American passengers,' said Cazeneuve.

'Thanks to the calm composure of the two American passengers, we have avoided a tragedy. Without them we would have faced a terrible drama.'

'They were particularly courageous and showed extreme bravery in extremely difficult circumstances.'

Not only did they save the sitting ducks on the train, can't imagine if the gun man shot the conductor on a "high speed" train.

Marines don't have to ever worry about getting laid. You must be thinking about the guys in the Army or Air Force. Those guys usually have to work at it pretty hard to score.

Awesome act of heroism by these guys. I read they followed the suspicious guy onto the train, then when they heard the unmistakable sound of the weapon being loaded in the bathroom they decided they had to act right away and did as soon as he left the bathroom.

 
My favorite part of that story is the paragraph devoted to the French actor who was "wounded" breaking the glass on the emergency call box.

Hope those guys make full recoveries.

 
So I like real-life American heroes as much as anybody. But the official story sounds a little fishy to me.

Two Marines just happen to be on the same high-speed train as a known terrorist suspect. And they "hear" that guy loading a weapon behind a closed door - on a high-speed train?

I think this guy was a target, and the takedown went awry somehow. And I thought that even before I heard this new wrinkle that they supposedly just followed a suspicious guy onto a train? Really? Like you're in the Amsterdam train station and you see a guy acting weird, so you just hop on a high-speed train to Paris to follow him? Would be a tedious and expensive 6-hour round trip if your hunch is wrong.

Also wouldn't be surprised if the heroes work for some government agency other than the Marine Corps.

Wow. A guy with an AK could have wreaked absolute devastation on a passenger train. Huge that these Marines were there to intervene.

Yeah, my antennae didn't go up until the gratuitous "followed him onto a train." If you're going to lie, stop adding details like that. It always messes things up. Keep it short, sweet, and vague.

That said, I'm holding out hope that it went down the way the official line is going. That would be pretty darn heroic and astute of these servicemen to recognize and thwart the attack.

Desh is awesome. But most of the other Treadstone guys were pretty lackluster - the Professor, the punk looking guy that comes in the Paris window - they had the total drop on Bourne but couldn't do the job. I liked the guy whose apartment Bourne ended up exploding - was never sure why he felt the need to engage in a death struggle once it became clear Bourne wasn't necessarily there to kill him.

Yeah I'm not proud to say it but I'm a bit skeptical of that story myself.

Not saying it wasn't brave or that they didn't save scores of lives. But something isn't adding up here.

No one else apparently noticed. I hope these Marines get some kind of recognition by the French government for this - they saved dozens of lives, if not more.

I'm going to hope for the best until proven wrong. Does seem too good to be true though.

Marines don't do missions like that. The US military is everywhere, literally. We are in over 160+ countries at all times. If you are in a big city there will be active duty military personnel around you, even if that city doesn't have a base. Can't find a lot of detail in any reports I read, which is why one could come to a coverup conclusion I suppose.

Propaganda. My buddy is long time special forces. No way this happened the way the story was spun, but score one for the good guys so who cares whether they want to pump up the Marines.

Any other time I'd have something to say to this. But this hardly seems like the appropriate setting for such juvenile interservice crap.

My thoughts go out to this Marine and his family. I hope for a speedy and full recovery. And if you are of a mind take a minute to think a good thought about all our men and women serving in harms way tonight. There's a lot of them in every branch.

For us naive folk.., what would be the reason to spin the story? If they were two agents tracking down a terrorist, why couldn't that be the story?

Because Marines and Americans are actually pretty great, this was an instance of two solid humans doing good #### for the masses. Happens every day, mang.
