I Witnessed a Horrible Accident (1 Viewer)

I was at a child's birthday party when a single car wreck resulted in the deaths of 2 people.

The driver fled the scene. We followed him and directed law enforcement to his location. After a standoff, the driver was eventually placed under arrest.

I informed the police that I was a direct witness to what occurred immediately after the accident. I gave them my name and phone number, but haven't heard back from them.

Since the suspect is in custody. Am I required to do anything else on my part?

 
Document what you saw. This is a serious investigation and your input could be crucial to bringing someone to justice.

The more detail you can provide, the better. Find a way to prove you're writing it on the day of the incident.

Probably testify at the trial?

 
Thankfully you were there. Good job chasing them down. The police will be in contact i am sure.

 
The accident scene was extremely disturbing. I understand that I might be required to testify in court.

Other than that, I should just wait it out, yes?

OK. I will sit tight. I'm attempting to be vague because of social media. I've read the comments regarding "what a nice guy" the driver is, despite my experience with said driver.

Yes type it out in as much detail as possible and study it thoroughly before the trial, which could be over a year away.
 
They will probably use the witness statements to negotiate a guilty plea more favorable to the prosecution

I did this about 10 years ago. Saw an accident happen right in front of me, pulled off to help, cops were there quick, spoke to the officer and gave him my statement and info. Figured there would be a call at some point and there was...the following year. And then another 2 years after that as the insurance lawyers got wrapped up in. Wish I would have documented everything the day of. Do it now if you haven't already.

Nope. Not fake. Other witnesses are now being threatened due to social media posts. My wife and I have offered sanctuary to the people involved due to the threats.

This is 100% not funny.

The cops should have already gotten your story, the longer that goes by without them talking to you the less accurate it will be considered in court.

Was the driver a black, an illegal mexican, or a Russian? If so you should keep your mouth shut, they can easily find out where you live.

ETA:

Single car accident? Maybe the two dead people were #### faced and he was being a good Samaritan driving them home. You may have just ruined this guy's life.

Really? The OP didn't kill anyone. Tough day all around. Talk to a psychologist if you feel the need. As was said, write down everything you can remember; memories change over time. Be well brother.

 
Were you one of the witnesses that helped him out of the car before he fled?

Everyone has a good side. Unfortunately, you shouldn't drive wasted.

I/m not trying to make light of this at all, but this another reason why police officer is probably the toughest job on Earth.

 
Don't focus on hit-and-run for those of you searching. There wasn't anything hit...It was a single-car accident where the deceased were in the car, and the driver fled.

If you find the article, the pictures of the driver will confirm it beyond a doubt. Guy looks hella scary.
