  1. How is this? I have a couple of cross country flights over the next few days and have it lined up in the queue: The Wind Through The Keyhole - King (currently halfway done) Ready Player One - Cline Snow Crash - Stephenson I haven't read Ready Player One, but Snow Crash is absolutely brilliant. And if you like it just move right through and read Diamond Age. It may even be better than Snowcrash. I've heard this from a couple of sources now. Thanks for confirming. After a couple of the comments here I substituted Ready Player One for Leviathan Wakes by Corey. I'm a little over 100 pages in and it's really fun. Not exactly high level writing but the authors know how to keep a plot moving (so far). Plus it's space opera Sci-fi. The Wind Through the Keyhole was a good read. Not a whole lot to do with Roland and his ka-tet. Well until the end. It was a nice way to add an extra little bit to Roland's character. But the main flashback/story tied in quite a few DT references. It's a fun quick read so if you're a DT fan just pick it up. I just read Ready Player One, and I really enjoyed it. If you played video games in the 80s or enjoy thinking about virtual worlds (or both), it's a pretty enjoyable romp. No real big surprises (maybe one twist toward the end), but just a fun book to read through.
  2. I agree with almost your entire post, and it's great to see someone enjoying this for the first time. I'd definitely get the books if you are a reader, you won't be disappointed except when you get to the end and you have to wait years for the next one. As for the scene with Jamie and Cersei - it wasn't rape. I know it came off that way on the show, but Martin and the director later said it was not supposed to be rape, but they can understand why some people thought that is what it was. It's easier in the book, because in a scene like that, they can show you what the characters are thinking (or at least, the PoV character). Anyways, minor point, it was definitely a disturbing scene, but it was intended to be consensual.
  3. Yeah, i wasn't too enthused with the beta last year. I'm gonna' pass on it as well. Me too, makes me sad. Really enjoyed killing (and reviving) my BF buddies. Yup, I'll just keep playing BF4 for now, wait for a price drop. I'm downloading the beta, but don't expect to find I like it anymore than I did last time around. Just didn't feel like Battlefield. For those that haven't played a while (and aren't burned out), BF4 is still a lot of fun to play, and many of the most annoying bugs are fixed now. I haven't been playing a lot lately, but if anyone wants to get a squad night together, I'd be in.
  4. I think this was true for the 4th and 5th, but going forward he knows what he wants to do. He does have a lot of projects on his plate. And he's meticulous with plot details and his web of character/history/setting connections. Can't be an easy thing to do even if you're really good at it. Yes, sorry, I should have clarified that I do believe he is "back on track" now, based on things he has said. But he still has to incorporate the storylines from 4 & 5 into the final books going forward and do so without derailing again. Man, I'll need to re-read 4 and 5 before the series kicks back off.
  5. I don't think he has them done, I actually think the story kind of got away from him and he is really struggling on how to get it back to his original vision. There is so much going on he's just going to need to kill a few people simply to extinguish some plot threads so he can draw things to a close in 2 books. He may be scared that people won't like how it finishes (heck, most long series like this have a lot of people who hate how they finish anyways). I also think there is an element of marketing involved (scarcity or delay makes more people talk about it, which increases his probable audience). Sure, some might quit reading because of the delays, but vastly dwarfed by the number of people exposed to it in other ways. In the end though, I think he just doesn't prioritize finishing it - at some point he just accepted that the HBO show would likely pass him up, and so there is no urgency to get it done. As long as he's still writing it, he is still relevant.

  7. There are videos for how most of the passwords were figured out, some of them are crazy. Remember the first of these assignments came out like a year ago, so they were discovered over the last year as each one was released. Prospect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fk5fdlbwL34 Trainee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj1xavDmZ6s Initiate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5qW9mHNHIE Operative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn4xHqnwjwo The passwords took a combination of a ton of searching both in game and through things DICE said publicly and online on websites found by searching for things found in-game. Crazy...pretty cool too, although I hate to think this way, but cmon DICE, the time spent on these easter eggs very well could have gone into fixing a few more of the bugs along the way.
  8. There will be more and more automated "safety" systems built into cars (like accident avoidance, cruise control with speed correction and auto-parking now) and by the time it comes to make the switch to complete automation, people will be used to their cars "taking over". Probably at first it'll be like cruise control, but as these safety systems prove to be more reliable, the clamor to further automate the car will come. Full-driverless cars will be just like described earlier, you won't own a car (or most people won't), they'll just rent time. Could be like a cell-phone plan, you get X miles per month for $Y. Different models (higher luxury, more privacy, etc) will cost more. Parking lots will be reclaimed into usable space, all you need is a dropoff lane for most places. Structures will turn into the central locations where the cars sit while unused, although the companies owning them will spend a ton of $$ on algorithms to keep their fleet as fully utilized as possible while still being able to be responsive to non-scheduled whims.
  9. I use Pocket Casts for my podcasts. I have no idea if you can get iTunes only ones through there though. Seems weird to have an ITunes only podcast. i've had that problem with some podcasts not being available outside of the itunes network. not much you can do other than see if the podcast has a website, download it, and put it on your phone manually, which is rubbish, but i've done it for things i wanted to hear Dang it - anybody have an old I-phone they want to seel for cheap? I don't care what it looks like only that the battery lasts for a few hours so i can listen to my podcast.... http://superuser.com/questions/78415/get-rss-feed-from-itunes-podcast-links
  10. Same for me - LOTRO. what was the draw? I barely can remember this one. I played for a bit. It is/was a fantastic rendition of the people and places of Middle Earth. I got a lifetime sub so I still pop in now and then. Part of me wishes I had bought the Founders Lifetime. The other part is glad I didn't. Man I spent a long time in that world. Oh the fun in the beta growing pipeweed hours on end just waiting for it to go live to have enough $$ to buy a horse on release day. My wife mocked me for doing that on my laptop while we would watch a show or something. I probably deserved it. I bought the Founders Lifetime probably less than 6 months before it went F2P. I installed it not too long ago, and after having to reset passwords 2 or 3 times got logged in. Nice thing about the lifetime is I had enough VIP points to purchase all the expansions including the latest one (and that only took about 1/2 of my points), so I can, if I want, log on and play through to the current level without any additional $$. That said, they've changed so much, and a large percentage of the draw was the people we played with - the social aspect of it. Once people drifted away, I found myself much less interested in playing. I'd like to give the mounted combat a try, and see some more of the world of M.E. as laid out in the game, but so much of it is grindy and if you don't have people that chat with while doing that stuff, it isn't nearly as fun.
  11. I recommend playing Air Superiority for the jet kills. It took me a bunch of rounds, but I finally got the hang of it. I have heatseakers equipped but I get way more kills using the guns flying in third person view. Once you can get good with the guns, you can kick some butt. It's still hard to get the 5 in one round for a ribbon (at least, it is for me) because the rounds end fairly quickly (at least on XB360) I finally got the 20 jet kills. No ribbons along the way, and it seemed every AS server I joined had a group of people trying to get their kills and 2 or 3 really good pilots who rack up 50-60 kills per round. But I'm ready to give up - I read the final assignment - you have to find a random dogtag, find 3 other people with the other 3 and then take an elevator ride. Ugh...
  12. Same for me - LOTRO. It's gotta be LOTRO for me, but if you include franchises, Battlefield is probably close. I know I had about 3 months /played time in LOTRO before I stopped the first time, and then came back for a bit about a year later, so probably 800-1000 hours. Battlefield 2, 2142, BC2, BF3, BF4 @ about probably around 200 hours each comes close.
  13. I got a sampler pack with the 12, 18 and 21 (or 12, 15, 18?). Anyways, just tried the 12 so far, it was pretty good. I thought it was a bit raw, kind of a rubbing alcohol kind of initial hit neat, but I did enjoy the glass I had. I added a little bit of water (1/2 teaspoon or so) and that helped mellow it out just enough.
  14. In the press conference, Zimmer had a really long pause before he went on to say he had a plan. He started to say more, and then said, "I'll just leave it at that, its up to him". I hope having a bad season helps Patterson put in a ton of effort this offseason on improving his game. I'm worried that he likes to have fun more than he wants to play football, and that he's never had to put in the hard work to improve because he's always been a better athlete than most of the players on the field until the NFL. But I also hope I'm wrong and that he is just raw, as was said when he was drafted, and that he takes some big steps forward in year 3. Oh, and to address regression - I don't think he really regressed. Zimmer/Norv just didn't keep him in for the gimmicky plays that Frazier was running him out for. At the end of his rookie season, a lot of his big plays where designed plays for him that covered up his weaknesses as a WR. The Vikings coaches could continue to do that, but that doesn't help him to grow into a good WR. You could argue they should do that because it could help them win games, and they did still send him out from time to time for some of those plays. Just not nearly as much as the previous regime.
  15. It looks like fun. And it gives me a goal in-game that's different than the "just jump in and play" aspect.
  16. They will never come in regular play unless you put in the password for each stage. I could have had half of them done if that was the case, I use the LMG quite a bit.
  17. Here are the number of permits he's approved: 2010 - 4090 2011 - 4244 2012 - 4256 2013 - 3770 Why bring facts to a political debate? That's no fun, you're just supposed to quote talking points back and forth.
  18. Trying to unlock the Phantom Bow, this is kinda ridiculous. First you have to put passwords in on Battlelog, then there are 4 assignments. 200 pistol kills (pistol/knife server, done), 20 jet kills...I don't know if I have 20 jet kills ever in BF4. Then another 200 LMG kills (Locker time) and shotgun ribbons, and more. Wish me luck on the jet kills, who knows, maybe I'll finally unlock the UCAV while I'm at it (need 3 jet ribbons). Got some free time again, so I'm back playing again a few times a week probably. Finally picked up the 39" 4K Seiki monitor, got it for right around $300 after taxes (was $339 at Walmart, I complained about a dead pixel and they gave me 20% off because they didn't have any more in stock. I still have to play at 1920x1080, the 4K resolution only runs at 30Hz. Fine for reading, web, etc, but not for games. And my computer can't really push 3840x2160 pixels in a 3D game anyways. It is pretty glorious, although it did take a lot of futzing with the settings to get it to look good as a monitor. It's pretty awesome when I'm working on it, I can have all kinds of things open at once.
  19. Because they are idiots and cowards. They even ran away from the ACA where it has been very successful. OH the GOP may say something mean, stupid and untrue about me if I support all these things that work. It's disgusting. This is a complete lie that only a partisan zealot would believe. You're ignoring the realities that most people are getting screwed over (much higher prices, much higher deductibles, etc..) by it. Successful? You are both using extreme viewpoints to support your preconceived views. The ACA has been successful, and during that, some people have had to pay higher prices/deductibles. Both statements can be true, when you are speaking about the number of people affected. The vast majority of people have noticed little to no difference in their insuranceMillions of people that didn't have insurance now have itPeople on plans that don't conform to the law have had to switch, sometimes having to pay moreMedical costs, while still going up, have been going up slower than they were before the law was implementedThere are definitely some things that can be fixed and amended to make the law better, and it hasn't been painless for all Americans. But it's also been fairly successful at the same time. That seems to be the exact opposite of what Max is saying Yes, I believe that his position uses individual cases being used to try to say that is the experience for everyone, where that is absolutely not the case. It's easy to make a story about Joe and Sally having to pay 20% more for healthcare, particularly in our current media environment. It's much harder to make a story about the millions of people for whom things haven't changed that people will care to listen to.

  21. Yup, this is what I've heard as well. Now the question is, do I have someone better for my flex spot or not, as I traded for Gronk earlier in the year, so my TE spot is fine. Any of my bench would be a better option than the last 2 weeks, but still not sure that should be expected going forward.
  22. Giving the TD to Felton, fumbled at the 1 officially.
  23. Spears are hard to wield, particularly in tight quarters which they often find themselves in. Hard to dislodge to prep for the next walker (if it's stuck, they still have to pull the walker close to push it off the tip). Harder to make. Don't get me wrong, it should be among their weapons, and short spears (like the length of the Katana) would be pretty good. I think swords are probably just about perfect, like the Katana (any similar length sword would work though).
  24. Kirkman said he has it in the actors contracts he can make them kiss anyone he wants...just sayin'
