Day 1

2/3/06

Late start to the day due to playing basketball. At around 3:00 I sat down at 4 $10/20 NLHE tables on Party. Been playing for about a half hour so far. Won a few small pots, mostly on semi-bluffs or aggression.

First big hand....not sure what I would've done if he pushed on the river or raised on the turn. Feel lucky here, as he played it very poorly imo and could've taken the pot.

Interesting....terrible play by him here. If hes going to call with this hand, then he needs to be willing to make a move after I'm so passive(which could've been a mistake by me, but I've played with this guy before and I didn't think he'd lay down if he had any piece of the flop).

Its about 4:45 now. Gonna take a break. Normally I could go much longer than this, but after playing basketball for the first time in about 3 weeks, my body is tired as hell, so I'm gonna go grab so food and come back later tonight....maybe I'll switch up to some PLOh/l8 and play in the MTTs.

Stats for this session

1 hour 30 minutes

353 hands played

12% hands won

66% showdowns won

20% flops seen

+$1801

7:00 now. Going to be playing the the $35K guaranteed at Party($100+9 entry fee) NLHE. Will probably play in some other tourneys too. Also going to play in some $10/20 PLOh/l8. Right now Party only as two of these tables going, so I'll only be 3 tabling(those 2 plus the tourney).

Hadn't seen any real action for the first 20 minutes or so until this, which was nice

Nice. A third table of PLOh/l8 is starting up on Party, so I'll be up to 4 tables now.

Damn I misplayed this. I was hoping for a blank on the turn and the I could've made a huge checkraise. The spade scared me off that, especially since I figured that I was not looking at best at 1/2 the pot. Could've been a huge win if the turn had been better.

Just noticed that David Dodds is sitting at my PLOh/l8 table...not sure how long hes been there for. I am now registered for the 9:00 $109 and the 10:00 $215 NLHE tourneys on Party and for the 9:10 $162 NLHE tourney on Stars. Gonna take a break for a bit to rest up before these events start. Ended up winning $1590 in my session of PLOh/l8- a very nice start to my journey today. Hopefully I can make a big score in one of these tourneys to really get out to a good start. Most probably done with cash games for the day.

Out of one tourney....terrible, terrible call here, but its only $109 tourney, so I don't mind taking a shot at doubling up early....would never ever make this call in a cash game or a higher buy in tourney. In fact, its hard to justify it no matter what the situation. Oh well.

Just registered in the FBGs NLHE tourney for $11 at Stars. At first break of Stars tourney, I'm at 3000, average is 2700, 235 out of 430 players left.

Employing the same "take chances early" philosophy in this Party tourney. I don't know why but I feel like gambling early, and if I get knocked out then I'll just go out and have fun since its Friday night. Got a little lucky here.

Day 1

2/3/06

Late start to the day due to playing basketball. At around 3:00 I sat down at 4 $10/20 NLHE tables on Party. Been playing for about a half hour so far. Won a few small pots, mostly on semi-bluffs or aggression.

Quick question. What's your thinking with that raise pre-flop?
Limpers from MP/LP are usually weak and probably will back down to aggression. EP limpers scare me a bit since they could be slowplaying a monster. The cards in your hand don't matter a ton in NL.

Assani, glad to see you taking on something like this and that you're willing to put your experiences in writing for everyone to see.I'm looking forward to this. Good luck

Ok. With that in mind with your raise pre flop, would have bet the same post flop if it hadn't hit you? For example, change the 9 to a 10.

Would've most likely played the same on the flop. Not sure about the turn though. Or I could've always check-raised on a bluff, which I enjoy doing from time to time.

Yes. I play this way often too. If I am going to play a mediocre hand, I will raise it up and play it strong, at least giving the impression that I have at least an A or K. This way if the Q, 9, A, or K flop, I can come out with a strong bet or two. If he hits it, oh well. But as a percentage play he'll usually miss it, and if he misses it and sees an Ace on the board and I am betting, he'll assume I've got one.

Easy money.

I think you are LAG, but wth do I know?
You're right. I remember when reading through Stu Ungar's biography, I kept thinking that our styles were similar(not at all saying that I'm anywhere in his league). One quote about him was that he probably went broke overplaying top pair more than any other successful player. The reason being that he was so aggressive whether he had a hand or not, but then if someone played back at him he could fold if he had nothing, play back if he had a great hand, or play back and lose if he had an average hand like TP.

Are you going to post everything here or are you going to start an actual blog like Dodds?
I'll be doing a blog(probably just on myspace), but I'll post it here too. I like this site because its easy to edit my post as I go along, so I'll probably actually post it here too. May post it on 2+2 when all is said and done, but probably not while I'm playing because I fear that I'd be playing against too many people reading them

I didn't understand this either. The only situation where I may have laid this down is where the reraiser were a complete rock throughout. Otherwise I'm playing this strong.

a lot of hands there have me completely dominated. Could he have been raising with a hand like QK to try to get a free card on 4th street? Maybe. But what even then I'm not a huge favorite. What hand do you think he does this with? J-9? Come on. AJ, TJ, JJ, TT, 66 all have me dominated. Calling here commits me to a big pot. I can wait for a better spot than this.

Quick question.  What's your thinking with that raise pre-flop?
Limpers from MP/LP are usually weak and probably will back down to aggression. EP limpers scare me a bit since they could be slowplaying a monster. The cards in your hand don't matter a ton in NL.
Ok. With that in mind with your raise pre flop, would have bet the same post flop if it hadn't hit you? For example, change the 9 to a 10.
Yes. I play this way often too. If I am going to play a mediocre hand, I will raise it up and play it strong, at least giving the impression that I have at least an A or K. This way if the Q, 9, A, or K flop, I can come out with a strong bet or two. If he hits it, oh well. But as a percentage play he'll usually miss it, and if he misses it and sees an Ace on the board and I am betting, he'll assume I've got one.Easy money.

This play by him screams flush draw with a lower pair to me. Depends on what image you have of him, but from MP, all of the hands you say would have you dominated he likely would have raised with. Him calling and then reraising makes me think flush draw, or perhaps lower J. J10 is the only hand that worries me.

How much are you going to win if he has QJ, a pair lower than Js? How much are you going to lose if he has an overpair, 89c or KQc, JT or a set?

Which set of hands is more likely to raise an EP better and caller?

We can definitely discuss this in detail more after I'm done playing, but FWIW this was an easy easy lay down for me. I thought for about 2 seconds and folded.

Just to add...I'm nearly a 2-1 underdog against KcQc or AcQc. And yes I could see him limping with 66 or AJ or TJ and even some people will limp with TT or JJ, not wanting to be put in a tough spot if overcards fall.

And does that even really worry you? If I flop J10 here I am not going to hammer the guy on the flop. I'd rather try to make a little money on it. His re-raise reeks of desperation to me, and the flush draw is what I was thinking too_On the flip-side, I can see Assani's point -- why fight that battle? Choose a better spot where the guy doesn't have, at worst, a 1/3 or so chance at killing you with his flush.

Bingo  I call this the "fake ace," and I play just about every medium hand this way. Q9, K9, your examples above, are perfect examples. I'll often play suited connectors similarly. You have a chance that an Ace flops, noone else hits it, you bet strong, and take it down. Better yet, there is a chance someone else has a monster like AK, an Ace falls, but your suited connectors put you in a 2 pair, or straight-flush draw type situation that is unexpected. He'll often times put you on AQ, AJ, A10 due to the pre-flop aggression, and you can beat him to hell.

Is this a fairly standard play? Why fold to the reraise? Fearing J10?
a lot of hands there have me completely dominated.
This play by him screams flush draw with a lower pair to me. Depends on what image you have of him, but from MP, all of the hands you say would have you dominated he likely would have raised with. Him calling and then reraising makes me think flush draw, or perhaps lower J. J10 is the only hand that worries me.

My basic point is this:There are 3 general situations:

Hands in which I'm the aggressor

Hands in which my opponent is the aggressor

Hands in which I have a monster hand(and it doesn't matter who the aggressor is becasue I'm just trying to maximize my value).

The strength of my hands really doesn't matter at all in the first two situations. I could have 2-7os and miss the flop or I could have top pair with an ace kicker. I don't like to play in pots in which my opponent has assumed the role of aggressor...it puts me in a scary situation where I don't know what I should do or how I will react. I don't know which cards are outs for me or if I'm ahead of behind. Big pots are lost this way imho.

You assume this guy would limp from his position with these hands?
Good players will limp with Aces sometimes.. what's your point? AJ isn't as strong a hand as you might thing... if he's a TAG, you're beat. Why risk it? Assani is a good enough player he can wait for better windows.

This is an excellent point. Probably the best lesson anyone can walk away from this thread with. If your opponent takes on the role of aggressor in a hand just get out unless you have a monster. There's easier money to be made.

I definitely agree with what you are saying here....However, given the way this hand was played preflop, I dont see this as being a situation where you are greatly worried about your opponent having you crushed, and you have a perfect situation to re-establish your agression.

We're talking about you having to put in another $120 in a currently $360 pot.

Personally, I make the call and then bet on a non-club turn. If a club falls, I see what he does, but would then be willing to throw away the hand.

I love the "fake ace" play as well with average cards. Great comments and strategy from Otis. Good luck Assani.

The more I think about this hand, the more I could see where this guy limped with 66. Which is the way most would play 66 from MP. He hit his set, and now wants to force out any flush/straight draws, or make them pay to hit that draw.

With one limper behind, I can see limping an AJ, although 66 and JT seem to be likely holdings here as well. What happens if he raises with AJ, and then gets re-raised?If the AJ was opening the pot, then I think you have to come in for a raise, but the limper makes a big difference. I often complete or check AJ from the blinds, simply because I don't want to commit more money to it with iffy position.

We all(I hope) agree with icon. AJ is a fairly weak hand to be playing from that position.
