GL with the PLO. I have a GB who plays this almost exclusively in cash games, and he does well. He's convinced the people paying it online just suck.

So far, I agree. Starting back up again now...gonna also play the Nightly Hundred Grand at 6:00.

am i the only one completely flabbergasted by the amount of money Assani plays with? Whenever I lose over a hundred I wanna slit my wrists and whenever I win over 100 I feel like a king.

Assani- I would delete any post that refers to not paying taxes of any sort if I were you. Just not something you want posted on a public forum.

Alright, so I'm starting up a online PLO quest. I need a new challenge and I'm loving PLO these days. I'm gonna start at $1/2 on Stars. If I win 10 buy ins then I move up to $2/4. Win 10 buy ins and move up again, and so on and so on, hopefully all the way up to $25/50. I'll post interesting hands and give daily results. If I flame out and suck then I may quit after a few days, but I'm hopeful that I can learn to play the game well and beat it for some decent money. I'll be 4 tabling 6 max games.
One of the things I have learned about PLO is that many of the people at the table will be PLO specialists. As a result, I think the level of play is higher than at hold-em. This can be good as I often struggle against really bad players, but it can cut profits too.
I could end up totally sucking and losing money and this statement will look foolish, but I really think people suck at this game. They play it far too passively, don't bluff enough, don't make enough call downs when getting proper odds, etc. I feel as if I'm nearly always the most aggressive player at the table.
I have held this position for a long time. Many players play poorly and can be lumped into one of three categories:1)Passive sheep who fear the nuts all the time2)Hold 'em action players that overvalue all their holdings and don't understand the necessity of playing coordinated hands3) People that love to get all in with the nuts, but have no redraws and extremely vulnerable hands. Many huge pots are won by having the same nut straight as someone else but having redraw options.Best of luck Assani. Don't be in a huge rush to get into bigger limits. $5/10 Omaha is big big game.

Assani, when you get a chance can you give some basic pointers for pre-flop play in PLO? I believe I grasp the "general" strategy of post-flop play, but I am clueless pre-flop. Thanks.

RFW may be beter than me here, but basically play cards that coordinate. Four to a straight, high pairs, suited aces, etc. Be tight out of position and LAG in LP. Don't play hands that will get you into trouble with no redraws- for example a hand like 2266 sucks because when you flop bottom set and meet aggression you'll have no redraws and not know where you're at.

Someone has brought this up before, but anyone could create the name "Assani Fisher" on an internet message board, and I'm 100% sure that the government has no right to search my deposit box at the Wynn, so they'll never be able to prove that income.

I understand this, but my problem lies with knowing what the correct raise is with the right hand. Is it any different than pre-flop play in HE though? Do you try to isolate one or two players? The reason I ask is in the few cash games I played usually the pre-flop play is weak loose and I feel like I rarely get good information on my opponents regardless of how I bet. I imagine I'm losing a lot of the pre-flop equity I could get and I tend to be hesitant with post-flop play then if I don't rock the flop. I'm guessing I should really memorize the rank of the possible starting hands as I'm somewhat hazy on the actual value of the hand I have. Definitely going to put your position tips into practice though.

Congrats on the nice finishes. That being said, I watched some of the final table and I thought you kind of played like a nit. I don't think you gave yuorself a chance to win or even finish in the top 2 or 3 playing so tight. It seemed to me that you were grossly outplayed. I'm not trying to bash you, just give constructive criticism.
I've had people tell me this for years, especially on twoplustwo whenever they've sweated me there. However, when I look at my stats I'm just not seeing it. My top 10 results according to Official Poker Rankings:9 1st places2 1st place ties(must've been satellites where multiple people win the same 1st prize)5 2nd places10 3rd places49 4th-10th place finishesThat breaks down to:12% of the time getting 1st2.66% of the time tying for 1st6.66% of the time getting 2nd13.33% of the time getting 3rd65.33% of the time getting 4th-10thObviously with only 75 samples, the variance here is huge and the numbers don't really tell the entire story. Moreover, I'll be the first to admit that in every tournament I've won I've had cards or gotten lucky. I've never just ran over a table with aggression. However, I did think my A7s reraise was aggressive and calling all in with 99 was certainly not being a nit as it was very likely at that point that I was a small favorite or huge dog(although 88 and 77 would also be possible and depending on the opponent smaller pocket pairs too I guess). But I don't want to completely dismiss your criticism. What I'll do is this: I'll email Stars support to see if they can send me the hand histories from the final table and post them here and we'll go through them all. Hopefully it can get me to further analyze and improve my game.

I raise the pot preflop on any hand I'm going to play in which nobody has yet to raise.

$5/10 Omaha is big big game.
agreed, I probably fall victim to #3 but I think I more than make up for it with my aggression. I've just been playing any draw ultra aggressively if I sense any weakness from my opponents whatsoever.
I like your play for the most part. I think you get a little too busy with marginal hands against unknown opponents. However, your aggressive style is particularly suited to pot limit, where you should be betting the pot a lot. Most people forget that if your bluffs/semibluffs work only fifty percent of the time, you would be doing fine even if you never stumbled into a winner. A lot of it just goes back to SuperSystem.Edit to add two things: I always preferred pot limit poker in general, because it seemed few people played it well, building pots then building hands. Most players where either limit players on training wheels before going to no limit, passively playing big draws heads up or no limit players waiting for a NL game, and always waiting to spring a trap. One thing I forgot to mention is that your betting in today's game makes you seem like a maniac. Back when I played, pot sized bets were pretty standard in both pot limit and no limit. Now it seems, the pot sized bet is used much less frequently- people seem to bet 1/3 to 2/3 of the pot much more frequently. I think that your pot sized bets get called down a lot by would be sheriff's looking to keep the maniac honest.

I raise the pot preflop on any hand I'm going to play in which nobody has yet to raise.
Amen. That raise gives you an unlimited range of hands postflop.

I'll rarely if ever raise from the blinds(unless I'm BB and everyone folded to the SB who limped in which case I raise 99% of hte time). If someone before me raises, I'll flat call 95% of the time, I'll reraise with good AA hands. As for Woz's initial preflop question, I believe there are some point counting systems out there where if your hand is worth a certain number of points then its playable....google for those. But after a while you kinda get the hang of which hands flop well and which don't on your own. If anything, as RFW said, I play too many hands, but I think I can make up for that by postflop skill and by having position.edited to add: I've find live PLO almost impossible for me to play well because there I truly play WAY too many hands....its just so easy to play a hand when you have 4 cards and when its a slow moving live game. For that reason, I greatly prefer to play it online.

I agree with Assani, but in a full ring I think you have to be a bit snugger than he is in hand selection. Initial hand selection with redraw possibilities is a huge part of the game. A lot of it is just an extension of basic poker:Part 1:What kind of hand do you have, what is your position, and does your hand play better against multiple opponents or fewer opponents.Part 2: Decide if you want calls or folds with your bet, and make the highest bet that will likely yield that result. Generally in pot limit, you want to build pots early to a point where you can take them down on the flop/turn with a pot sized bet if you sense weakness and have position or any draw.Part 3: Learn your opponents tendencies as quickly as possible and manipulate them. One great thing about pot limit is how deceptive an image you can create. You can look like a total maniac because you are hammering away with pot sized bets and raises in uncontested (low contested) pots. What the less astute player doesn't realize is that you are willing to jump ship if you get played back at for deep money unless you have a very good hand/draw. Eventually they get sick of it, figure you can't have it all the time- and look you up with two pair when you are betting the pot on the river. PLO, if you have the discipline to maintain good starting hands, is IMO, the most profitable of all poker games. It is definitely worth learning.

You are not alone. I played most of my PLO live in Houston. I used to sometimes play in a 3 blind 1-2-5 game, and it was much much bigger than the 5-10 NL game. Tangent: While it is harder to put people on a hand preflop, it is often easier IMO to pick up tells live in Omaha. The reason is because people often have to look at the board and their hand and try to put it together. It is easier to read their reaction when they either have a hand, or a searching to find a hand.

You Luckbox!I'm not ready to write up a full article on Doyles Room, but I can say this. There are few players here and most of them are low limit. With that being said - most of the play is very amatureish. If your looking for something easy, this is a great site.

 I love playing Omaha live with recreational players because you can see them counting their draws and straights.

Can be tough when you are used to holdem, but 2nd set isn't that strong a hand. I think I would have folded unless I had a read that this guy would throw a big raise with something weak. Nice result anyhow.
The fact that I had been so aggressive impacted my decision a lot. I felt that he definitely would've stood up to me with bottom set given how I've been playing. Then the 4 gutshot outs made it a call imo. I do agree with you that smaller sets are huge trouble spots at times though.
Hand history can change things.

really? Because I'm bored out of my mind playing this low right now, but like I said I want to do things the right way and make sure I'm a solid winning PLO player at each level before moving up.

You gotta understand man, for us regular working falk 741 is like what we make in a week. I understand the margin between your wins and losses is pretty comparable, but for most of us losing a week's pay in a day is rough.

Explain to me why a guy making boatloads of loot playing NLHE would do anything BUT that.
Good point - boredom maybe?I really do think really good poker players are in it largely for the enjoyment and competitiveness though. For people like you and I we may see, say, DWI defense cases or doing the paper work for foreclosures as cash cows so there is really no point in exploring other legal work as the cash flow relative to effort per case is so good. However, with poker, I think it's different. There's no guarenteed steady stream of income so I imagine a little dip in variance - a professional nuance not included in the practice of law outside maybe personal injury or class action tort cases - would be frustrating enough for someone to want to switch to something new. It's also very easy in poker to immediately determine one's rank amongst his peer so the competitive drive is definitely there to be great at all the poker games where that's not the case w/ no other possessions (e.g. you probably don't desire to be better than me at criminal defense as I likewise have no desire to be better than you at whatever it is you practice).

Um, I consider myself a really good poker player and I play to make money. Yes, I have a passion for the game and thoroughly enjoy it unlike little else in life, but don't let that confuse you. I'm playing to make money. Bottom line. Other people play for other reasons (other people = recreational players), but serious players play to win money.

Ugh, think I'm getting sick....just slept for near 5 hours....hopefully I can play through the night, but I'm not sure. But back at it now for the meantime....

Yea, that does make sense to me. I think it just comes with experience. Once you've won and lost these amounts daily for 4 years its not going to really affect you anymore.

1. I understand I'm gonna get no sympathy from the 9-5 working class here, but its really easy to get burned out playing the same exact game every day for 60+ hours per week2. I'm doing well, but "boatloads" is a bit of an overstatement imo.3. I can't beat high stakes NLHE cash games online. I can beat lower stakes, I can beat tournaments, and I can beat live NLHE. However, I think I may be able to beat high stakes PLO games online, and if so then the ability to play so many hands per day at PLO would be 10x more lucrative for me. Seriously, the potential here is enormous if the games are as soft as I think(and if I'm as good as I think, which 99% says I'm not lol)4. Its something fresh and new and I'm enjoying it a lot now

There certainly is some competitiveness in it in the sense that I would much much rather get rich from playing poker than just getting lucky and winning the lottery. It would be a great accomplishment and something I would be very proud of to make a great career solely from poker.

Just curious where this hand ranks preflop in terms of strength: (came up in PLO play money)Ac Jc Kd Jd
ITs a very very strong hand. I'd raise with it from any position in 6 max(probably even EP in full ring too, but I don't play that). I'd call a raise with it from any position. If theres been a raise and a reraise before me I'm probably folding it unless the money is really deep. If I raise and someone comes over the top then I'm flat calling(if its a shortstacker then I'll just put him all in.....God I hate shortstackers though). If its a medium/short stack then I may fold if I think hes only reraising with AA or KK.

this is why i hate even learning a game in play money form. people just push with any 2 (or 4) cards. there were like 5 people allin preflop when i had this hand. flopped the nuts - 9c Tc Qh. River was a K, so I had the nut straight with AJ. just not sure what i'd do with real cash on the table (not that i'm ready to play for real cash yet).

I have never been the player Assani is, but I was, at one point a decent player. I made a posting here about 4 or five years ago that went something like this "Pot Limit Omaha: Learn this game at once." As Assani articulated, many people are really bad at this game- much worse than they are at hold 'em. In the medium to long run, I think that Assani has the potential to make more money playing Omaha than hold em, if even he isn't as good as it as it is at hold 'em.I think that every poker player has flaws. If you can know your own flaws, you can try to best find the game that mask your flaws. I think one of Assani's flaws is that he doesn't just want to win, but he wants to win playing high stakes poker. It is a bit of an ego thing and he simply players more seriously and has greater focus with more cash on the line. PLO will offer Assani the opportunity to play higher. The players aren't as good- in part because the texts aren't as good. There are a number of great hold 'em books. There are far fewer good PLO books, and often the best choice in PLO is counter intuitive.
