Assani's Poker Thread

Recommended Posts

I walked into a straight flush the other day at one of my shorthanded tables - the dude was tilting and I knew it, w/ 9d 9h I made a rather large PF raise 6x he called it with 7d 4d, then calls a pot sized bet on the flop, he hit his straight flush on the turn, I made a boat on the river and MHWNG - I had to do a double take when he flipped over his cards - I never saw it coming

Day 63

4/19/06

10:00 in the morning now. Going to play 2 $530 STTs at Party and one $555 STT at Stars to start the day off.

Nothing really going on in any of them...slow starts, but I've stayed around average. Still waiting for one to fill up though...the other 2 are well into them.

Eh, pushed with A4, called and beaten by JJ. The blinds had gotten up to 200/400, so I had to make a move. Still alive in the other two.

Was a bit scared of TJ.

ALERT HIJACK!

Played around 10 thousand hands in the last 2 years (Took a big brake this winter from hold-em online)

Last Night I Hit my 1st Royal Flush!

Hold Card's QT S

Flop KJs and 5 D

Bet before me was 2 bucks (25 NL)

I called with flush, Open in Str and STR Flush and Royal Flush draw.

Turn: Ah

Guy back off only bet a buck I figured him for K's or Flush draw

River: As!

He lead out with 4 buck bet witch I waited about 10 sec and bump to 8 ... (Prying he had hit some kind Full house)

He Folded! Still nice take down.

As said been playing onLine for 2 years but played House games and Vegas twice a year for many more. Just glad I finally hit one! LOL

END of Hijack

Did you subtract the $11 you lost in the FBG tourney last night? ;)

Yeah, my totals are always taken by looking at the balance in my Party/Stars account.

At this pace we are looking at around $100/day. For comparison, my little sister babysits for one of our neighbor's kids during the summer and makes about $10/hour. If the neighbors happen to go out to dinner after work, she is looking at roughly a 10-hour day...

and most people don't get to do what they love. Hand me a hundred bucks a day for no boss or all the other bull#### at work and let me do what I enjoy and there will be no complaints at 36.5K a year. Hell, I really love the beach. Some volleyball, a couple beers at sunset, hotties wearing next to nothing....yeah, I love that and would settle for 36.5K a year to do it. Not even a moments hesitation in accepting that prop. If the guy loves playing cards making 100 bucks a day aint the end of the world.

the sample size is far too small imo for you to make any conclusions about it. I did this mostly for a fun experiment, not to show conclusive results.

I don't think its defensive so much as you really coming across as a ####. You seem to project your own failures at online poker and be rooting for Assani to fail. And every chance you get you attempt to drive home some point that makes you feel better about your own failures. That's great man. We get it. You lost a lot of money. But believe it or not, most of the people who read this thread WANT to see Assani succeed.

My every day life will not change whether Assani succeeds or fails. But I admire his drive to do this and I think your belittling a guy for making "only" $100/day is assinine. Given your very well documented career at poker, you think you would understand that variance is a pretty large part of it. Just as today he can be averaging $100/day, tomorrow he could be averaging $1100/day or -$100/day. That's the nature of poker. All your snide comments do is reinforce to many of us why you fail at it.

I've decided to stop the quest. I'm stopping because with the World Series of Poker coming up soon, absolutely imperative for me to start winning money, and the only way I can sure of doing that is by dropping down to stakes that will most likely not enable me to meet the $100K goal(but they will provide a much more steady and safer income). Looking at the lineup I'm going to need around $35,000 to enter all of the events that I wish to enter. At my current bankroll, I could not afford to lose that much.

I have enjoyed the discussion that I've encountered through this blog tremendously both on FBGs, Myspace, and via PMs. I won money, so I don't look at it as a total failure. However, it is demanding to have to comment and post hands as I go each day. It keeps me from playing as many tables as I can. Right now, I think I'm going to drop down to much easier levels and play 8-10 tables at time. Most probably I'll play $3/6 NLHE ring games and $215 STTs. Addittionally, I'll still enter MTTs on a regular basis(I still could easily make the $100K in the desired time should I score big in one of these, which would be quite ironic).

Furthemore, I'll continue to post different poker hands, thoughts, and analysis here. And if I'm deep in a MTT, I'll most likely post about it here. I appriciate all of the thoughts and support throughout this. If I would be fortunate enough to win money at the WSOP, then I would definitely consider doing it again

I think you made the right choice Assani. Good job in having the balls to stop and get yourself ready for what really matters to you. Good luck in WSOP and look forward to continuing to follow this thread.

If you do well at the WSOP, I think you should try another 100k in 100 days and keep notes and write a book. A different sort of poker book compared to whats on the market, and would be an intriguing story. Similar to your blog, but less exact hands and more life and poker lessons learned.

If you do well at the WSOP, I think you should try another 100k in 100 days and keep notes and write a book. A different sort of poker book compared to whats on the market, and would be an intriguing story. Similar to your blog, but less exact hands and more life and poker lessons learned.

The book is an excellent idea.

GL Assani, and thanks for the thread. I think it really helped a lot of people here, and it was a great read.

At this pace we are looking at around $100/day. For comparison, my little sister babysits for one of our neighbor's kids during the summer and makes about $10/hour. If the neighbors happen to go out to dinner after work, she is looking at roughly a 10-hour day...

I could live on an 100 dollar a day allowance if I was doing something I loved.

most people would like >25k a year salary.

and most people don't get to do what they love. If the guy loves playing cards making 100 bucks a day aint the end of the world.

move to Ocean Beach in San Diego. $850 a month gets you a 1 bedroom 2 blocks from the Pacific. Grill out 3-4 nights a week (even in the winter), beer is legal on the beach, and hotties in skimpees on the regular.

do you realize that $100 a day means you have to turn that profit on a daily basis. sure you can win $100 one day, maybe 7 in a row. but then you take a loss. i go to work every day and get paid ... i never have to pay to go to work.

i play a lot of poker. too much. i would not want to HAVE to do it to replace my income.

for most people to replace their income they'd have to make $1500 a week playing poker. i'm sure there are a lot of people on this board who think they can do it. if you're one of them, take a week off from work and give it a whirl. you'll probably be happy to have a job to go back to.

and if you would be happy making $100 a day, you obviously have no reponsibilities. i have a wife, two kids, a mortgage and two college educations to pay for in the next 5-10 years. i don't think $100 a day cuts it.

Trust me, I've thought and prayed about all of this a ton. A few points:

1. Doing well in a MTT can drastically improve the results. Consider that about 10 days ago I was in a MTT that was down to the final 3. I was all in with KT against JQ. The JQ won. If I had won that I mostly like would've taken first with my huge chip lead instead of 3rd. Thats an extra $15K. So now that would be over $300/day. Thats poker though- I'm not complaining. I'm just saying that I think my average over the long run will be a lot more than $100/day. I've played poker as a pro for about 3 years, taking one break for 4 months in there. If I didin't think I could average well over $100/day I would've never started this quest. With all that said, I'm not making excuses for my failure. I didn't make it- plain and simple. But I'm just pointing out that better results are very very possible in the future, so when analyzing my choice to play poker, we shouldn't cap it at $100/day. One big MTT finish(which I have may of) can greatly increase one's rate.

2. You and I are in very different positions. I'm 23 years old, have less than $1500/month in bills, have no significant other, and could always borrow money from parents if absolutely necessary. I'm young, and I'm going to take my shot at becming filthy rich. I may not make it and get off to a late start to my career....thats a risk I'm more than willing to take.

3. I tried working real job. I had a $50K-$70K/year job in sales(depended on commission). Playing poker and being able to sleep in and answer to no boss is 10x better than the best real job I could think of. I won't argue this point, as I realize that it is a personal preference.

4. The downswings do suck, especially when poker is your sole source of income. I fully realize this. But I'm a gambler at heart(my father was a poker pro), and ultimately I think its what I enjoy doing the most.

Good luck next time. And good luck in the WSOP.

Lots of defensive folks in here.  I stated only facts.  Make what you will of it.

:goodposting: Very, very well said.

GL Assani, looks like I'll be seeing more of you at the $215 SnG's at Party.

GL Assani - I have enjoyed this thread, I have not read every hand but will definitely give it another perusal. I think you are making the right decision. The games you were playing at I am sure you enjoyed, but you know what? In order to make a semi-regular income from poker I think you need to play at the games you absolutely crush - granted it is not as high of stakes but it should prove more reliable to you - NL poker is a grind. The good news is you can still always play in those few high stakes MTT's during the week to keep your passion up. GL in the WSOP.

I've very much enjoyed this thread and seeing all of the hand histories and the way you, as well as others, have played various hands. This was an ambitious endeavor to begin with, and updating this thread constantly added even more time and effort. Hopefully WSOP main event final table will include BostonFred, Dodds and yourself, and I can turn to my wife and say "Hey, see those three guys? I kinda sorta know them"

Ridiculous post. My comments were directed at the h8ers ripping on Assani for making 100 bucks a day. Your post makes no sense as it doesn't apply to him. Pretty sure he doesn't have a wife and 2 kids. I'm assuming Assani loves poker. My post that if you're doing something you love and the end result is you got paid 100 bucks a day to do it that's certainly nothing to get ripped on about made sense. This one does not given the context.

Assani, I'm very curious what events you will be playing. I was starting to look at this myself and try to make arrangements, etc. I'm looking into a house potentially for July with a couple of other people if you are interested (or anyone else) PM me.

Right now, I'm thinking I will play events 13, 14, 31, 32, 34, and the ME. I would have liked to play a PLO event but I don't think my schedule is going to allow any of them (except the 10k which I think I'll pass on).
