New topic for discussion for the experts here. I was wondering for those of you playing big $ leagues, are you concerned that this year will turn these leagues into basically a lottery with the teams at the top of the snake likely dominating? Seems like anyone getting one of the top three draft postions will be getting a RB head and shoulders above the rest of the league, a second RB on par with those drafted at the beginning of the second round, and a top flight WR. Just seems like draft position will be a lot to overcome this year.

It seems that way every year. I really think it's the mid round picks that make the team as long as your first and second rounders don't completely go bust. I won my WCOFF league in 2004 from the 12 spot and I started off taking Barlow and Harrison. I just had fantastic mid round picks like Bulger in the 8th and McMichael in the 10th as well as a few others. Last year I had the 3 spot and was fortunate enough to have gone with Edge instead of Priest. Unfortunately, I took Ahman Green instead of Lamont Jordan with my 2.10 pick. I still ended up with the 17th overall regular season high score and 16th overall in the championship bracket. If I had taken Jordan, I would have led all 720 teams in regular season scoring. You can overcome and win from any draft position.

But does it make sense to enter the fray (where you're already paying vig) kowning that pure chance could put you in a position to have "overcome" draft position? I basically see mimimal difference in the talent at 2.1 to 2.3 versus what's available at 2.10 to 3.3. Moss/Holt/CJ/Smith/TO...just give me whoever is left.

No doubt Bass. But, when you throw your ducketts into the pot, it's the same for everyone. I agree though regarding this years WCOFF. Any top 3 RB pick and then two WRs of either Chad Johnson, Torry Holt, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, or Marvin Harrison and you've basically tripled your odds of ending up in the championship game imo. The WCOFF does have auction leagues that run on the Friday before the main event if you truly want a level playing field. Who knows? Maybe the entire FF community will eventually adopt more of an auction based format to keep it closer to being fair. Some day I'd like to get into a high stakes league where the money is just held in an escrow account so that the highest percentage payout is possible. I'd ante up anywhere from $5 to $10 K if the cash was secure and I didn't have to claim any IRS winnings.

Thanks for starting the thread Jeff. As Twilight can contend, it can get to be a pain in the ###. Especially, when I'm wasting all my free time conversing with Fred, Bass, and Yuds when I should be sleeping.

Guys,

Just back from church and heading back in a min, so I'll catch up after 1PM EDT (Daylight now, right?).

Looks like a lot of discussion since last evening.

Late night rambling, but other than the drinks I've had clouding my thoughts, there's really been some good discussion this morning. I was really glad that some other key league guys were up when I was. Enjoy church Jeff and we'll see you in a bit.

Hope he said a prayer because he'll need it with the team he drafted. :boxing:

Yes and No. I think it obviously is an advantage to land one of the top 3 picks this year, but you can easily overcome a disadvantage at RB#1 with some sound drafting and team management. My Survivor II team scored the most points out of 24 teams(including all 12 FBG staff) because I was able to grab Tiki after the big RBs and land quality TE/WR/QB sleepers. The staff is still trying to figure out what happened. :lmao:

Or maybe, with the RB depth where it is, people need to start drafting the top WRs ahead of the medium RBs. The reason the top 18-20 RBs go in the first 24 picks every year is because everyone goes for stud RB. But look at the list of backs right now:

I'm not saying I would start all of those guys, but even after the draft, I expect about 25 RBs that could potentially go in the first two round of a 12 team league. I think RB WR RB is the way to go this year.

I've loaded up with WR before and been thin at RB and that hasn't worked well either. IMO, you need at least 1 stud RB and another RB to do well from somewhere, whether it be an early draft pick or one later on that emerges. Having only one viable RB can be instant death.

BnB,I finished #2 overall in Rotobowl last year drafting out of the 10 hole. WCOFF-like scoring with PPR (Def was 10-pts against, no yardage pts). Roster was also 2 RB, 3WR, 1 TE, 2 FLEX (RB/WR/TE), so PPR was huge.

I went Westbrook / Holt, and WRs led my team. RB depth kinda sucked with Westy and Dunn and just Bettis and Pittman and Wells after that, along with Moats. WRs led the team (Holt, Kennison, Rod Smith, Larry Fitzgerald, David Givens). TEs paid off well too.

The point is that I was in the final game out of 168 teams (and lost :wall: ) while drafting at 1.10.

Sure thing. I'm used to doing dirty work around these parts :)

:boxing:

New topic for discussion for the experts here. I was wondering for those of you playing big $ leagues, are you concerned that this year will turn these leagues into basically a lottery with the teams at the top of the snake likely dominating? Seems like anyone getting one of the top three draft postions will be getting a RB head and shoulders above the rest of the league, a second RB on par with those drafted at the beginning of the second round, and a top flight WR. Just seems like draft position will be a lot to overcome this year.
:lmao:
While I like the 3-hole this year, if you have PPR (which I consider "standard" scoring more than most) there is solid value at 4 / 5 / 6.Drafts aren't won in the first round. They can be lost, but not usually won. Rounds 2-7 are key, and true values at 8-13 can push you ahead by a mile.

My initial analysis on WCOFF this year is that I will not enter due to several factors.

1) The advantage that can be had at the top 3 picks increases the luck factor

2) I haven't spotted many good "sleeper" RBs that can be had to help make up the difference.

3) My money is better spent on high dollar survivor leagues

I will only compete in WCOFF if I have an angle because the rake is so big...this year I don't see an angle.

There is one strategy I'm considering but for the most part I don't like what I see this year in the WCOFF format.

You tell me...Just got a call from an investor looking to dump a property worth $180 for $160 in a hot market. It's already rented and the tenant wants to add a year to the lease.

Calendar girl called me to set up a date for later in the week.

It's sunny and about 80 degrees here.

I agree on the rake. I'll do other leagues.

Granted, I wish the payouts were better but I really don't know how LHUCKS can even come into this making comments when he's never done it. Don't know if Bass has either. But, I remember last year I posted my team hours after it was drafted and it was criticized by LHUCKS and others. Pony up and experience the entire event before you just write off things about like "rake" or "format" or whatever. If you have the audacity and ego to call yourself an "expert", at least take the time, money and energy to get to one of the biggest FF conventions around in one of the greatest cities around. Put yourself out there and see how your results come in. Then, make comments about WCOFF format. I guarantee you I can teach you a thing or two.The other thing is it's not always about the event's take. If it is professionally run, and it is fun just to participate, that means something. It actually means a lot. Try it first. If you don't like it or see the difference, then don't do it again. WCOFF has an incredible retention rate and it's not like a bunch of dummies participate because they can't figure out the vig. Something else very fun and special is going on there.

Radballs,I have nothing against WCOFF in theory, but for me to go to LV opening weekend is pretty tough logistically. Granted WCOFF is now going to be in Atlantic City this year as well, but after attending Rotobowl's inaugural event last year I was rather impressed. Draft, followed by afterparty at a club in one of the AC Casinos (House of Blues - Showboat) it was a great event.

$250 entry, nearly 100% payout due to first year and sponsorships.

Plus I did well :)

I considered ponying up the nearly $2K to play WCOFF, but the fee, payouts and location were far more palatable to stay on the East Coast.

I'm also going to look at NFFC (I think in NYC) and other leagues that I get clued in on from fellow FBGs.

Or maybe, with the RB depth where it is, people need to start drafting the top WRs ahead of the medium RBs.  The reason the top 18-20 RBs go in the first 24 picks every year is because everyone goes for stud RB.  But look at the list of backs right now:

1.01 Twilight - LaDainian Tomlinson, RB1, SD

1.02 rzrback77 - Larry Johnson, RB2, KC

1.03 Frank Black - Shaun Alexander, RB3, SEA

1.04 Jeff Pasquino - Clinton Portis, RB4, WAS

1.05 BassNBrew - Edgerrin James, RB5, ARI

1.06 David Yudkin - Tiki Barber, RB6, NYG

1.07 bostonfred - Steven Jackson, RB7, STL

1.08 Aaron Rudnicki - Lamont Jordan, RB8, OAK

1.09 Construxboy - Carnell Williams, RB9, TB

1.10 Fiddles - Brian Westbrook, RB10, PHI

1.11 LHUCKS - Willis McGahee, RB11, BUF

1.12 radballs - Ronnie Brown, RB12, MIA

1.13 bicycle seat sniffer - Rudi Johnson, RB13, CIN

1.15 Duke1948 - Kevin Jones, RB14, DET

2.01 Team Legacy - Deuce McAllister, RB15, NO

2.03 EBF - DeShaun Foster, RB16, CAR

2.04 bicycle seat sniffer - Julius Jones, RB17, DAL

2.06 LHUCKS - Warrick Dunn, RB18, ATL

2.07 Fiddles - Willie Parker, RB19, PIT

2.09 Aaron Rudnicki - Thomas Jones, RB20, CHI

2.11 David Yudkin - Chester Taylor, RB21, MIN

2.13 Jeff Pasquino - Reuben Droughns, RB22, CLE

3.02 rzrback77 - Domanick Davis, RB23, HOU

3.03 Frank Black - Corey Dillon, RB24, NE

3.07 bostonfred - Jamal Lewis, RB25, BAL

3.09 Construxboy - Reggie Bush, RB26, Rookie (Hou?)

3.10 Fiddles - LenDale White, RB27, Rookie

3.15 Duke1948 - DeAngelo Williams, RB28, Rookie

4.01 Team Legacy - Tatum Bell, RB29, DEN

4.05 radballs - Ahman Green, RB30, GB

4.11 David Yudkin - Chris Brown, RB31, TEN

5.01 Twilight - Laurence Maroney, RB32, Rookie

I'm not saying I would start all of those guys, but even after the draft, I expect about 25 RBs that could potentially go in the first two round of a 12 team league.  I think RB WR RB is the way to go this year.
I've loaded up with WR before and been thin at RB and that hasn't worked well either. IMO, you need at least 1 stud RB and another RB to do well from somewhere, whether it be an early draft pick or one later on that emerges. Having only one viable RB can be instant death.
I won my WCOFF league last year with Edge. My second RB was a rotation all year

Kevan Barlow - drafted

Mike Bennett - drafted

Chris Perry - drafted

Chester Taylor - drafted

Jonathan Wells - waiver wire

Your 2nd RB doesn't always have to be a stud. In fact, I won the week Edge had his bye. The more depth at RB the more of a reason there is to draft the BPA while keeping touch with their ADP and your VBD.

Don't make mistakes your first few rounds. Go with winners, don't go for the homerun.

If My experience has taught me anything, it would be, Winning high stakes leagues is all about balance and limit.

BALANCE THE UPSIDE AND LIMIT THE RISK.

4 YEARS OF WCOFF DRAFTING -

2002 - LOST

My WR Draft - Keyshawn Johnson, Plaxico Burress, Ed McAffrey, Shaw, Hakim, Kennison, Jefferson, Dwight, Pinkston - Had extreme value this draft in RBs. Edge at 6, A Train (projected RB8) in the mid 2nd and Garner (projected RB17) in the mid third. All 3 terribly disappointed. While Key and PLax were ranked 11 and 12, they didn't make it either.

Morale of the story: Neglecting wideouts in the WCOFF will make for a quick exit.

2003 - WIN

Started with Ricky at 3, then Holt, St Davis, Toomer and grabbed Boldin late. When my receiving corps were Holt, Boldin and Toomer, I won.

Morale of the story - Grab your wideouts early and take chances on them late IF the opportunity presents itself.

2004 - LOST

This I call my most ARROGANT draft. Fresh off a LCG victory, I went again 3 RBs to start the draft. LT, Dillon and Bennett, thinking, "I know the WRs out there. I'm going to steal them!" The WR draft went as follows - Rogers, Porter, Lloyd, Warrick, Givens, Watts, Evans and Woods.

Morale of the story - Don't THINK you know... KNOW you know. Hype is great, keep an eye out for it, but when Jimmy Smith, Rod Smith, Reggie Wayne and Kennison all go after Rogers and Porter, the HYPE is out of control.

2005 - WIN

When my receiving corps were Holt, Chad, Jimmy, Galloway, Rogers, Matt Jones and Chris Henry, I won. >> Notice - Elite guys 1st, Proven vets second, Upside guys third. I learned from the previous year's mistake and will always look to keep my 1st picks reliable while the upside and hype will stick with the later picks.

Im gonna do a WCOFF satellite for $200,draft is online, if ya win it, ya get free entry into next years main WCOFF. The league is total points unitl week 14, then top 4 playoff in week 15,16. Of course I tried last year and finsihed 5th in points.

So if you call yourself an "expert" you can't analyze a ff format and determine whether or not it is a good play for a given year...to each his own I suppose.

I played last year and SQUEAKED out a victory in the LCG thanks to Vinny to Coles in the last seconds of the Monday night snoozefest. Thanks to that Coles drive and 2 TDs I came back and won a miracle and free entry to this year's event.

Some people still prefer an Antsports league, thanks to certain "unnamed" benefits. PM if you'd like more info.

I might enter a couple of these to get some WCOFF experience under my belt before entering the main event in a year where I see a viable strategy.

I was really thinking of going a different direction here, but given that this guy might start in the backfield I can't pass on it.

Just asking... Obviously you would have to be doing it for the "event" or "experience" as the payouts are worse then the local kneecap breaker. Being the "redneck" that I am, I reserve that weekend for killing birds of peace, eating BBQ, and drinking beer with friends. For the cost of the "experience", I can finance a nice trip to the midwest to chase my birddogs for a week. I don't think the competition is any tougher then what I find on these boards, so that's a wash to me.

I may do it some year just to meet some folks I interact with on these boards.

Just want you to try it and the benefit for you would be that I would demand that you allow me to buy you a beer. It's a fantastic time and a serious adrenaline rush when you walk into a ballroom that encompasses that many teams and players. Sorry John. Didn't mean to bash too much. Just trying to motivate you to get your butt out there one of these years. It's a blast.

$1200, tenant will likely resign at $1250 to $1275. It's a push at $1200 and $50 cash flow isn't much to get exciting about. As you may have read in the real estate thread, I see anything under $100 / sf as a bargain (this home is 2000 sf, 4 bdrm, built in 2000) with what's going on in the market. Basically will be investing zero capital and trying to sell for $190 next year. That should leave me a $15K profit after expenses and commissions. Not a huge haul, but I've made less doing more work many times in my life.

1) What's wrong with Tiki ? Funny how he's always relegated to an afterthought.
2) I haven't spotted many good "sleeper" RBs that can be had to help make up the difference.
2) Out of this list, you can't scout a few sleepers? I assume you're strategy is to take a Top Wideout and a Top QB to make up the difference and grab a quality starter later. This year fits that strategy perfectly. Look how many backs there are!!1.04 Jeff Pasquino - Clinton Portis, RB4, WAS

I will only compete in WCOFF if I have an angle because the rake is so big...this year I don't see an angle.
Just so I understand, why would you assume that some year in the future, you'll eventually have "an angle" to beating the rest of the guys who consider themselves diehards?
3) My money is better spent on high dollar survivor leagues
3) High dollar survivor leagues ?? What $$ amount are we talking here?Final thoughts:

Only enter the WCOFF if you want a 1 in 75 chance of winning 200 grand. There's really no other reason financially it can be justified. The $5k isn't a grand payout, but word is LP is looking at improving it.

I personally enjoy the Thursday to Sunday camradarie. A few of my buddies play as well and it all starts as soon as we get off the plane on Thursday.

Grab as many futures odds throughout the sportsbooks. Scout out the best ones and you're ready for the ESPN Zone Thursday night. Friday is HOLD EM day, Saturday is the draft, Sunday is football.

Talking last minute strategy, downing a few brews and tossing a few cards before the games.. It doesn't get much better than this.

Ollie, I'll see you there.

Regarding the WCOFF satellites, I highly recommend them if they have the software dialed in. There were quite a few logistical problems during some of the drafts (site locking you out, incorrect picks, etc.) but most of them were worked out. I did two of them for $200 each. I won one of them against opponents that included some of the bigger names (Perry and the guy that wrote the book :D ). In any case, the sats are winner take all so far but they might be slightly changed. But, just to review my 2005 WCOFF season:

Regular WCOFF

$1,800 ~ invested

17th overall regular season - No money. Pays top 10 I think.

16th overall in championship bracket - Pays top 15 where 15th got $2,900. I finished 1.4 points over 4 plus weeks behind 15th, the first spot that doesn't get any additional money. If I had started Cooley instead of Witten in week 15 I would have finished 6th overall and received over $8K.

Got to league championship game but lost ($1,500 consolation). Still had high enough total points to get into the championship bracket being 17th overall. Alas, as previously stated, no extra money by 1.4 points over 4 weeks.

WCOFF Satellites

Two leagues with $200 entry fee for each. Made post season in both. Won one of them with supposed superstar opponents even though the live software froze up and I ended up with the 3.12 pick being my 3.01 pick. Long story and I won't go into it here. But, I would say that if you could care less about the hoopla that the satellites are the way to go in terms of bang for your buck. Still, I just cashed out my $2K.
