Week 3 IDP Coaches Corner (1 Viewer)

In response to the ever-growing number of folks playing in IDP leagues and the lack of response advice requests get in the Assistant Coach Forum, we're opening a separate IDP advice thread here.

Questions seeking advice about starting lineup decisions, waiver pickups, and trades should go in this thread.

You'll get better responses if you include your league's scoring system and other pertinent information -- roster size, starter requirements, redraft/dynasty/keeper league, etc. You'll get more responses and we'll have better discussion if you "show your work" -- who you think you should start or pickup and why. Word of caution: IDP vets like to see that the newbies are willing to do their homework and apply what they've learned. You'll get more detailed responses from multiple sources if you aren't looking to be "spoon-fed" a decision. Many of those kinds of questions can be answered by Norton's weekly cheatsheets and rankings. This thread should be more give and take.

We'll turn this thread over every week to keep it from getting too difficult to use. Please search the thread briefly before posting a new question -- you may find that we've already discussed a situation similar to yours.

Finally, advice about many general IDP topics can be found in the pinned FAQ thread. If you don't find what you need there, post a new topic in the Forum.

Looks good to me. Suggs is a stud, Burgess will come around once the Raiders settle down a bit and I've been a big fan of Cole since last season. Your backers are solid, although if you don't get a premium for sacks you're a little big play heavy there. And the secondary is nice.I was never a huge fan of Seward and that boxscore doesn't surprise me as I thought Williams was going to be the guy to get the bulk of Morgan's value. I'm a big Clements guy but need to look into that situations a bit more. I'd have an eye on Smoot, he may be taking advantage of the scheme out there and Jimmy Williams will become a good option when he faces a better team.I'd probably look for a better option than Wimbley, even if you're in a dynasty league, and I'd have an itchy trigger on Udeze too.

I am starting to get fed up with S. Taylor hype and not much production when there are better available or so it seems. I bolded my current other DBs. I listed DBS currently in top 10 in our scoring available.

Scoring

Tackle=1, Assist=.5, Sack=2, Int=4, FR=2, FF=1 TD=6

1 Kerry Rhodes 21.50 S NYJ

2 Jermaine Phillips 21.50 S TB

5 Sean Jones 19.00 S Cle

6 Roy Williams 18.00 S Dal

7 Shaun Williams 17.00 S Car

9 Donte Whitner 15.50 S Buf

I have two top ten DBs right now but would like to get a 3rd decent DB for bye weeks.

Is any of the four listed above not in bold worth a pick up and drop S. Taylor?

As CC said, that scoring system is heavily skewed toward the big play. Keep the backers you have.I firmly believe that Tamba Hali is going to break out in Week 4. Keep an eye on Kenechi Udeze this week, but he's really yet to any consistency in three injury filled seasons. You've got two solid linemen and a probable big play threat in Cole; unless Udeze has an impressive Week 3 I'd dump him for Hali next week. Hali gets the SF and ARI OL in Week 4 and 5 and has produced solidly in matchups against tough OL (CIN and DEN) over the past two weeks. I think he breaks through in the sack column in a big way soon.I don't see Darnell Dockett having much impact in the sack column. As someone else noted in another thread, Dockett is a nice player but likely took care of the same weakness that Shaun Rogers did the week before against Seattle. In your league, you should be looking for big play guys with great matchups to cycle in and out as needed.

I've never really bought into the Sean Taylor hype either; I gave him another hard look at redman's suggestion (and a few others) this offseason and still don't think he'll be consistent enough to warrant his lofty expectation. He is scoring better in the tackle column thus far, though.I'll be shocked if Jermaine Phillips keeps this production up. It's possible that the planets have aligned -- as it did for Quarles in a career year last year -- but it's more likely that Quarles and Brooks return to their tackle hogging selves when not faced with a player like Vick who's essentially running a shotgun option offense.

Any of the other three guys are solid options. I'm partial to Shaun Williams for now, especially if Morgan remains out. If you're leery of Williams injury issues, I'd lean toward Jones. Whitner may be the best player of the three, but he's going to have some of the same issues with inconsistency as Taylor, both newbie and scheme related.

Good thoughts and comments. Greatly appreciated.

I need to start 3 DL in a 1 pt per tackle .5 per assist 3 pt sack, int 4, FR 3, PD 1

Here are my choices - none very good

K Williams vs Bears (one good week, one bad week)

M Anderson vs Vikings (not a starter yet)

K Carter vs Titens (average player)

Trent Cole vs 49ers (49ers are best in the league at not giving up points to DL)

Ray Edwards vs Bears ( may be the sleeper starter)

Aaron Schobel vs Jets (he has all but disappeared in FF)

Bryan Thomas vs Bills (still a DL on MFL)

I am currently leaning towards Thomas, Cole and Schobel but Schobel has done nothing and I need to get the most from my starting DL's - they have cost me a game by goose eggs.

I don't want to start two Vikings against the Bears.

thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My first instinct would be that you have it right. I'd need to read Rudnicki's rundown of the Bill DL rotation a bit more though to be sure. I'd sure have a hard time benching a guy like Schobel unless it's clear he's getting only 30-35 snaps a game. If you hear that Ray Edwards will be a three down player this week that might be enough for me to bump Thomas.

Thanks Jene - I hate bench Schobel but it sounds like he is in on 1st and 3rd downs with Denny and Kelsey rotating in and out. Are the Jets the team that can give Schobel the healer? Yes I am watching for news on Edwards - read on a different premium site that he is the replacement for James but I don't know if he'll be in all 3 downs and he is a raw rookie yet?? Will have to see all the articles this week and roll some dice.

Just traded Ray Lewis so I need to pick up another densive starter.... we only start 3 defensive players each week with the following scoring...1pt tackle 1/2pt assist. 4pts for ints, sacks, 3pts fumble, fumble recovery.

My current D roster: Bullock, A. Davis, Odell Thurman(should return soon)

Players on my wire:

C. Hope

A. Archuleta

G. Wilson

E. Sims - leaning towards this pickup although there might be a better matchup?

G. Brackett

E. Barton

B. Scott

S. Jones

A. Crowell

S. Fujita

J. Phillips

Any great matchups here for me or should I go with someone who is likely to be consistent like Sims?

If you're looking for the best week-in, week-out option, I'd lean toward Gary Brackett (with Sims, Wilson, and Hope in the mix as well). With that many good options available though, but no clear stud choices, I might play matchups every week and look for the guy in line to make the most tackles. Who will be on the field the most, who's surrounding cast will put them in the most opportunities, what trends help to make the decision?I don't see one particularly huge matchup there, though, so I'd probably go with Brackett.

The reason I am hesitant to start an Indianapolis defensive player is that Indy tends to dominate the clock. Even though they are playing the Jags, the Colts' offense should be on the field far more than the D.What about Fujita(Saints) against the Falcons who will run the ball 24/7. Will that that up the chance of Fujita tackles? Just checked and Roman Harper is also available.IMHO Sims is the most talented backer of this lot but he is up against the Packers so it does not sound like a great matchup- although I could be wrong.B. Scott(Ravens) is up against Cleveland. It seems like Scott is the rushing LB on the Ravens so there might be a great chance of a sack or 2 of Frye. He has 3 sacks already.Anyone else have any further input. Or any other players who are likely to be on my waiver wire who I might have left out....we only field 3 per team so there are plenty on the wire. Of course the most obvious are taken.

I'm short on lb's and I'm bumping my head up against our salary cap at the moment. Is it time time to cut bait on Brian Simmons and pick up Hayes on the WW while I have the opprotunity. I feel like Simmons' best game was probably last weekend and he's not exactly a tackling machine. If not Hayes, should I stand pat or find another guy. Here are my options:

Scoring format: 5 - 9 solo tkl = 3 pts. 10 tkl. = 6 pts. Every tackle thereafter = 1 pt., INT = 5 pts, Sack = 3 pts., FF = 3 pts., FR = 2 pts.

I feel like Simmons' best game was probably last weekend and he's not exactly a tackling machine. If not Hayes, should I stand pat or find another guy. Here are my options:

Desperate for WR help, I made the following trade before week two's games:

I gave

Keith Bullock

Dallas Clark

2nd round rookie pick

I got

Mushin Muhammad

Vernon Davis

Kerry Rhodes

4th round rookie pick

This leaves my IDPs as:

DL

Rod Coleman

KGB

James Hall

Okeafore

LB

James Anderson

Nick Barnett

Karlos Dansby

Thomas Davis

London Fletcher

EJ Henderson

Bart Scott

Adalius Thomas

DB

Fred Smoot

Mike Boulware

Glenn Earl

Deon Grant

Terrance Kiel

Ed Reed

Kerry Rhodes

Adrian Wilson

Here's my first draft of week 3 starters (2-3-3):

DL - Hall

DL - KGB

LB - Fletcher

LB - Barnett

LB - Thomas

DB - Wilson

DB - Rhodes

DB - Boulware

At DL, I think the GB-Det game is going to be an (attempted) air show & my rush ends should have plenty of opportunities for sacks.

Over at LB, I think Fletcher is a must-start every week & that Thomas is this week. I'm half-tempted, though to put Scott in place of Barnett. I don't like Nick's matchup for some reason, though I don't think I could say why.

I feel pretty good with Wilson & Rhodes at DB, but am wavering on my 3rd. I've got Boulware in mainly because I think he'll get a shot at a big tackle game against the Giants, but I'm wondering if Glen Earl wouldn't be a good fit against the Skins.....

Thoughts?

Anyone else have any further input. Or any other players who are likely to be on my waiver wire who I might have left out....we only field 3 per team so there are plenty on the wire. Of course the most obvious are taken.
I'm with Jene on approach-- this kind of league is great for playing matchups. I like Gibril in Seattle this week from your list. He should be very busy all day.

I think you're pretty sharp and wonder why you seek validation. :D The lineup looks good.
Not so much seeking validation as I don't have the comfort level with IDPs yet that I feel with O players. So - Barnett or Scott? Boulware or Earl? ;)

I whip out my Smoot this week. Grossman is a gunslinger and one of the reasons I'm packing Smoot is Grossman and Favre. Additionally, if the Bears try to grind it out, Smoot should get enough solos to make the decision not that risky. But then, my high risk theory on CBs is not the kosher approach. I'm kosher with my LBs where I want and need those consistent numbers-- Barnett.

This is an 8 team redraft that requires I start 3 IDPs from any position. Not the most challenging IDP from what I have read from the IDP forum, but this is new to me. Roster limit of 5 IDP players.

Solo (1), Sack (3), Interception (3), Fumble Force (2), Fumble Recovery (3), Touchdown (6), Safety (2), Pass Defended (1), Block Kick (2).

My current roster:

J. Taylor Mia vs. Ten

G. Wilson NYG @ Sea

D. Ryans Hou vs. Was

L. Tatupu Sea vs. NYG

M. Peterson Jac @ Ind

Players that are available:

A. Kampman GB

W. Harris SF

A. Thomas Bal

J. Phillips TB

R. Mathis Jac

J. Peppers Car

B. Scott Bal

A. Wilson

T. Suggs Bal

C. Hope Ten

Ju. Smith Cin

R. Denney Buf

G. Hayes Ari

T. Cole Phi

D. Hall Atl

R. Barber TB

Ja. Allen KC

B. Simmons Cin

J. Farrior Pit

C. Emmons NYG

J. Peterson Sea

A. Pierce NYG

A. Archuleta Was

M. Greenwood Hou

Br. Young NO

Would you make any changes to my roster, and who should I look to start this week? Right now I have slotted Taylor, Ryans and Tatupu to start...would you recommend anyone else?

One thing I would surely do in a start three 8 teamer is only carry three IDPs. There's some excellent offensive talent on waivers, but it isn't as deep as IDPs and I would want to use those two roster spots for the best available offensive players. A. Wilson A. Pierce They stand out to me, but I'm not current on Pierce's physical problems (dehydration/leg?). Still plenty of talent on your list. I'd replace Taylor and Ryans with them if I was determined to carry 5. Peppers and Suggs are available making Taylor a luxury you really don't need.

We start 4 or 5 DBs based on the set... I'm opting for 4 because I think I can get better production from my LBs. Am I starting the right guys (in bold)?

Return yards count,

2pts/INT

1pt/PD

2pt/Tackle (1pt/0.5)

3pts/Sack

McGee, Terrence BUF CB vs Jets

Trufant, Marcus SEA CB vs Giants

Adams, Mike SFO S vs Eagles

Bullocks, Daniel DET S vs Packers

Harris, Chris CHI S vs Vikings

Tillman, Travares MIA S vs Titans

Jackson, Dexter CIN S at Steelers

McCree, Marlon SDC S

Pollard, Bernard KCC S

Wesley, Greg KCC S

With Wesley on bye and Harris hurt, I'm in a bit of spot- your guidance is much appreciated. Any news about the SS situation in DET? Is there a chance Bullocks starts there this week?

Thanks for the insight, especially about the max. roster numbers. I joined this league 5 days before the draft and have been trying to absorb IDP insight as fast as possible. Seemed obvious to me to carry the full roster, but what you say makes excellent sense re: using those bench spaces for offensive players. Thanks again! You can bet I'll be back.Luther

Hi El Floppo,That's not a sexy list of DBs, is it? Any chance we can have a look at your waiver wire first?

Shaun Williams listed as DOUBTFUL enables me to make an IR pickup (until he is no longer OUT or DOUBTFUL.

Two free agents that jump out at me are -

Jermaine Phillips TB

You're telling me. 12 team dynasty with deep bench (53 total players)- there's not a lot better than what I've already got, IMO... but you tell me.1. 43. Well, Dexter Jackson is OUT this week, so bench him. I don't know that Herndon is benefitting from QBs avoiding Trufant, but it makes sense to me. Something you might consider. In past seasons we've seen CBs take off out of nowhere like WHarris in SF, and we've seen a few flame out, and we've seen a few keep up the solid numbers. Really, what's the risk of riding that wave for a week considering other options? Dawan Landry is an interesting add in a league this deep. He's on my bench in a 53 spotter. So, I go McGee and Adams. I bench Jackson and Tillman. I consider Trufant against Eli, or Herndon in his place. And I go with Harris.

thx to those of you that have been kind enough to help me along thus far. those that have not read one of my posts, i'm in a 10 team start-up dynasty league, all of us new to idp. i thought i did a real good job drafting based on fbg rankings, but i'm not really blown away with my squad's performance yet (i know it's early). i missed some big points in week 1, but understand that there's some volatility to consider. that said, i'm having a bit of trouble identifying who i should "always" be starting. any fb would be most appreciated. thx.

I'd be very comfortable riding these four for a few weeks. I would be just as happy starting Pierce over Lofa if Pierce is healthy.

thoughts on sharper? i watched him closely during the skins game, and was really frustrated. not sure if it was a respect thing or not, but wherever darren was johnson would throw the other direction.

I don't expect much from Sharper this year. He's a free safety who blew up and had a few monster games last year. But, he's a cover 2 safety now and he's not goig to pile up tackles as you wait for the big plays.

Guys all these dbs are available on the wire... Mccalister,Barrett,Andre Dyson,Fakir Brown,Nate Clements and Fred Smoot.. If you had to pick 2 what would it be...

Because of my current cap situation, I don't have the ability to just snatch a guy off the wire. I have to cut someone to free up the necessary space and I'm a little short on LB's because I traded Donnie Edwards for an '07 4th round rook pick (strictly for cap purposes). 9 solos = 3 points. So does 5 solos. Hmm. Assists = nothing. Without seeing your O scoring rules, I bet this is low IDP value scoring. Iow, your IDPs are not very important. Maybe 10 or so finish in the top 100 scorers in this league? I don't think you're short on LBs. I think three is plenty in this system. I've been torn between EJ and Simmons for over a month (I own both). Simmons may drop off when Odell comes back, so maybe EJ is the better to own for the whole season. But there's nothing about your roster or waivers that cries for change. Cole would be a nice addition. Sacks have nice weight in this system. Abraham is ppg gold but he may miss more games.

It looks like Ed Reed is an overhyped bust...

1.5tack, .75assist, 5int, 4sack, 3ff, 2fr, 1passdefend, 1per 10 yards kick/punt return

Do I drop him for:

J. Phillips

C. Hope

W. Harris

M. Minter

S. Schweigert

M. Jackson

K. Herndon

N. Collins

I'm short on lb's and I'm bumping my head up against our salary cap at the moment.
A little more detail on this comment needed.
Because of my current cap situation, I don't have the ability to just snatch a guy off the wire. I have to cut someone to free up the necessary space and I'm a little short on LB's because I traded Donnie Edwards for an '07 4th round rook pick (strictly for cap purposes). We're able to start multiple formations in IDP, so while I don't have loads of depth, the multitude of flex positions gives me enough latitude to put together an effective lineup. Here are the formations with my current roster:A: 2 DL - 2 LB - 2 DB

B: 1 DL - 3 LB - 2 DB

C: 2 DL - 1 LB - 3 DB

D: 1 DL - 2 LB - 3 DB

DL: Robert Mathis, John Abraham

LB: Keith Bulluck, Ernie Sims, Brian Simmons

DB: Gibril Wilson, Michael Lewis, Terrence McGee, Mike Brown

REPOST:::

We moved to the tiered system for tackles last season. This was the commisioner's brainchild and his logic seems to be that the system rewards "studs". Unforunately, CBSsporstline doesn't support the inclusion of assisted tackles in the "tier". Therefore assists must be scored seperately. So, after pounding my fist on the table the commish relented and we scored the assists seperately at 0.5 pt/ast tkl. During the offseason, the assisted tackle issue was put to a leaguewide vote and it was shot down. I really think this was due to me posting a 13 - 2 record and dominating the points race. To be fair, the offensive scoring rules are quite restrictive as well.FG - Field Goals 3 points
