The Boogie Monster.

Two LA-based comedians talking about urban legends and gohsts and such.  One of them is Kyle Kinane, my favorite stand up.
Thanks for the tip.  On paper, I should really like this, but I dumped it after 2.5 episodes.  It seemed like a poor version of The Dollop.  And Kinane clears his throat about 100 times per episode.

Anybody listen to the Malcolm Gladwell podcast that just started, or the other one from the people behind Radiolab?
Gladwell podcast is terrific.

Just listened to the "Blame Game" episode.  Interesting conclusion that it was driver error that caused those Toyota acceleration crashes a few year's back.  If I understand correctly their were times where the gas pedal did get stuck but the driver could have stopped the car if they hit the brakes.  The crashes were predominantly caused by drivers thinking they were breaking where in reality they were flooring the gas pedal.

I don't take everything Gladwell says as gospel.  But I do enjoy his boldness.

Another tidbit from Gladwell serries.  Not breaking news but still startling.

Princeton has a 22billion dollar endowment making $750+mill a year.

I drove 16 hours over the last two days.  Probably 13 of them were spent listening to The Dollop and Lesser Bonapartes (the Moorish Spain series).  Good stuff.

'Stuff you missed in history class' is great.
Is that the one where about 20 episodes in, the guy broke script, said he couldn't fake it anymore, and quit?  I thought it was great that they kept that as an episode.  I didn't make it too far past that episode due to female vocal fry annoyance.

Maybe, but not that I'm aware. If it was this podcast it was long before I started listening. It's just two ladies these days who talk about weird and wild stories throughout history. Some are duds like most podcasts but most are pretty entertaining.

Jocko Willink.

I can honestly say that he, not just his podcast alone has changed my life.

Hes a former Navy Seal who talks a lot about being accountable, hard working and a leader. I only wish I met someone like him 25 years ago.

His podcast is usually him discussing a book, often militarily themed, which actually isn't the biggest reason I listen. Its the stuff he says and shares in between.
Dot for my next work trip when I usually listen to a ton of podcasts.

The Adventure Zone is too good. Next episode is slated to be the finale of their first campaign, three years in the making.

The McElroys are all great storytellers.

Also overcoming the name "Jocko."

I like Gladwell's writing well enough, but I can't stand his voice for some reason. Makes that podcast a hard listen even though the topics are interesting.

If this is inappropriate for this thread, I'm happy to delete, but if not... shameless plug here for my own podcast - Don't Wait. Leap!

In the podcast, I interview business owners about what they were like growing up, why they made the leap into running their own business, and then what life is like as a business owner.  Each episode is about an hour.  It is inspired by long form interviews like Charlie Rose, Girl on Guy (Aisha Tyler's former podcast), Inside the Actor's Studio and I'm sure is subliminally influenced by a lot of my favorite podcasts like Nerdist, Never Not Funny, Crabfeast, Business Rockstars (back when Ken R was the host), and a slew of others (I have a nearly two hour train commute, so lots of time to listen).

If anyone takes a listen and has any thoughts or feedback, I'd love to hear it.  Season 2's premiere was a lot better than episode 1, and I am working to make them better and better as I go.

If anyone on here is a business owner, I'm also always looking for guests.  I'm in northern NJ, but I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to have a skype recording with good sound quality.

Joe Bryant is a business owner...

Really, really liked season 1. Season 2 is mediocre and sponsored by Blue Apron.

I tried the search function so forgive me if already discussed. But The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe (the dirty jobs guy) is awesome. "Story telling for the ADD".

I could listen to Rowe read me the phonebook but these are on average 10 minute short stories about people, things, places and how they came about. Really interesting story telling has you guessing the subject, some are obvious while others are harder to figure out. Give it a listen.
I'll really been enjoying this one. Not only does Rowe have the perfect voice for a podcast, I love that these are only 10 minutes long.

If anyone else knows of short podcasts of 15 minutes or less, please share.

I haven't listened, but The Lead has short sports podcasts.  Typically on a show like Simmons, he'll paste together 2 guests and 4 topics for an hour-long episode.  The Lead covers just one topic in a shorter podcast, but might do multiple episodes in a day.  http://www.theleadsports.com/main/podcasts/

Alexi Lalas used to have daily 2-minute podcasts, but he's 3 formats down the road by now.

15 minutes is pretty rare for podcasts.  Are Freakonomics episode that short?  That was one that come to mind.

One that I really love lately that is short is Song Exploder.  Usually 20mins and under.  The podcast features an artist who breaks down a new song of theirs and then at the end of the episode they play the song in full.  Found a lot of good new songs this way that I might not have bothered with otherwise, but I am sure it depends on your music tastes - it leans a bit indie/alternative.

:hey:

I get to NY quite a bit. I'm sure I could swing up to NJ sometime.

But the @Joe Bryant suggestion is probably a lot more interesting...

One of the underlying premises is that "everyone is the hero of their own story" - in 7 interviews so far, that is proving to be very true.  Would love to have you on.  I'm in NYC most days, so hopefully next time you are in town, we can make it happen.  Would love if you'd PM me...

There are many shorter podcasts I like, some of them are around 15min but they almost all vary in length from episode to episode. If you are anything like me I typically skip the first minute and the last few minutes.

~10min : This Week I Learned, Real Time with Bill Maher(Bonus Bill/Overtime)

~20min : Planet Money , 99% Invisible

Upon looking for suggestions of other podcasts to try, I stumbled upon:

My Dad Wrote a Porno.  Obviously NSFW.  The premise is one of the podcaster's 60 year old father writes a bad erotic novel, so of course they read a chapter an episode and bag on it.  Bad writng, UK humor and accents, bad sex scenes, etc..

Memory Palace.  Shorter one about unique stories from history.  Probably somewhat similar to 99% invisible

I will definitely give it a try. It's nice to have a few for sitting in a waiting room, etc to balance out the "Hardcore History" and "Joe Rogan" podcasts that are better on a long train/plane trip.

I discovered the Kevin Pollack Chat Show this week.  Apparently been around for a long time and streaming on Youtube.

Pollack is not a particularly good interviewer but when hand picking past episodes of guests that I'm generally interested in, he's tolerable.

There are two episodes with Billy Bob Thornton (who I generally find fascinating and I will read/watch/listen to anything he's involved with).  If you don't listen to any, but just fast forward to the last five minutes of this episode, it's a pretty funny story of BBT meeting Peter Falk.

I know I'm late to the party here, but I finally couldn't deal with the stock iPhone Podcasts app anymore and forked over $3.99 for Pocket Casts.  I really wish I had bought it a long time ago.  Easily worth the money.  And as an added benefit, it supports Apple CarPlay, so I can use it in the car I just bought.  Big  .

Their stock podcast app is horrible and clunky.  It was a big reason I was dragging my feet getting an iphone vs. Galaxy.

How do these pod catchers work?  I understand it tracks what programs I want.  Does it download them to your phone when connected to wifi?  Can you then listen to them without using data?  Or does listening to them require data or wifi?

I know that's how Pocket Casts works since I just configured it.  I went into settings and set all my subscribed podcasts to auto-download new episodes, but turned mobile data off, so it will only download when I'm on Wi-Fi

I use Downcast.  I choose for each podcast how I want to get the episodes.  For some, I subscribe.  When I'm on wifi, it automatically downloads any new episodes.  For others, I manually add new episodes (think of a chronological history podcast, where you want to start at episode 1 even if it's currently on episode 100).

It also automatically deletes episodes I've finished listening to.

I have an Android, and I like Podcast Addict. Easy to use and free.

My 13 yo boy just finished History of Rome in a month and is caught up on History of WW2 normal and member episodes, so I loaded all episodes of Revolutions and History of Byzantium to give him the option to follow Duncan or follow the Romans.  He went for Revolutions.  It's so cool that he's carrying around an iPod nano with over 300 ~30 minute history podcast episodes plus a Carlin.  He's going to drive his history teachers nuts.

Maybe they have been mentioned, but there are a few that I have just been introduced to in the last couple weeks or so that I have really fallen for:

The Next Picture Show:

Some of the people from the AV Club (pretty sure), and they juxtapose a newer movie with an older one. Really love this format.  Examples are:  Contact/Arrival, Close Encounters/Midnight Special, old Ghostbusters/new Ghostbusters, etc...

The Great Albums:

really glad I stumbled on this one.  A couple guys that are the main hosts and they are musicians themselves (also have some decent guests) talk about an album in it's entirety.  Talk about background of the band, other albums, etc.. and then go into a song by song review of said albums.  Anything from Weezer to Slayer to Springsteen are episodes that I have encountered so far.

Cine-files:

I thought about @jdoggydogg when listening to this one.  Hosted by a couple guys - one a directing teacher and one an actor - they talk about a variety of movies.  In depth discussion about behind the scenes, themes, editing, music, you know - everything that goes into creating these movies.  Fell in love after listening to the episodes about Apocalypse Now, 12 Angry Men, and especially Die Hard.  Great stuff here.

These all sound good. I'm down with anything AV Club related.

Maron with Jennifer Jason Leigh is pretty good, if only because of the sexual tension. Maron watched Fast Times to prepare for this interview?? :lmao:

I like Maron a lot. But he is poorly prepared sometimes. He only talks about what he's watched. Leigh has a new Netflix series, and Maron didn't mention it once - which means he hasn't seen it. Dude, spend 30 minutes and just watch one episode.
