I was thinking more of the characters we saw across a season or two at least, but yeah, those guys were pretty dumb. I don't think Brandon had a lot going on upstairs either.

Couple of observations on Pie O My episode

* Ralphie calls jockey a midget and when they meet, Ralphie is barely taller than the jockey

* Ralphie jumping up and down screaming "I'm rich" over and over when he won only 40k. The disparity in wealth between the wise guys was always of interest to me in this show. Tony lived like a king as a captain, and people like Paulie lived like poor people in a tiny apartment.

 
Paulie lived like he did because he was cheapskate who probably didn't get anything more than he really needed. I mean, this is a guy who in the episode where he and Vito are talking about their close to a million dollar score, is seen clipping coupons while talking on the phone about it. :lol:

Tony, meanwhile, was all about excess. Plus, Tony had a wife and kids; Paulie had just himself.

 
Watched the last episode of season 3 last night. I always hated how they ruined Junior's singing with that ##### Meadow throwing stuff at him, and then that weird music montage that goes over his voice at the end. What was that all about?

Just listening to Junior sing was great.

Paulie is shown in the series to need money at one point. It is not like he is a miser sitting on top of a ton of money. Tony knows he can't really afford Green Grove for his adopted mom.

True, Paulie was not a boss, so he naturally wasn't gonna be rolling in cash non-stop like Tony or any of the NY bosses. Plus, they always alluded to other earners kicking up more than him (whether it was Albert, Ralphie or Vito). But I suspect Paulie was never really in dire need of money (except for maybe when he first got out of the can in the middle of Season 4), but that he just hated having to spend money he didn't count on having to spend. Like the 8K a month for his ma at Green Grove.

I was not comparing him to Tony as a boss. Obviously Tony would have more as a boss. But when the series started Tony was only a captain and was living great. Although he made have been made captain very young which could have allowed him to build up his money. I do agree with you that Paulie was likely a cheap *******.
 
Likely? I think everyone about Paulie screamed CHEAP *******. :lol: :P

As for Tony, he always came off as pretty smart when it came to business and making deals. To use his phrase, he was very much of a pragmatist when it came to the big picture.

Not to nitpick, but it was $4K/mo. That was the exact amount he demanded from Jason Barone, remember?Speaking of Jason Barone (Chris Diamantopoulos), he's been on commercials lately. Investments or insurance or something, I forget exactly. He's got a lot less hair, but it's definitely him.

:shrug: I have no idea where Tony gets 8K from. Maybe Livia's stay cost more than Nucci's for some reason?

In the episode "The Fleshy Part of the Thigh", it was disclosed to Paulie that his dying Aunt Dotty, a nun, was actually his mother. She had become pregnant with him by a soldier identified only as "Russ" during World War II. Nucci, the woman Paulie had thought of as his mother, was really his aunt who took him in to hide the scandal. This flabbergasting news sent Paulie into an emotional tailspin, in the grips of which he severed his ties to his Nucci and did not attend Dotty's funeral. The episode ended with Paulie extorting $4,000 per month (the sum of Nucci's retirement home costs) from the son of the late owner of the Barone Sanitation company, unbeknown to Tony.

Maybe prices went down when new people took over. Remember that they whacked the owner of it ("that hair piece mother ####er!" :lol: ) at the beginning of Season 2, so maybe the murder and suspicion of mob ties made Green Grove's stock go down and prices went down with it.

 
The acting in this show is so abysmal at times (Big #####, Bobby, Chrissy, AJ etc etc etc) that when you watch an episode like Whitecaps and watch the tour de force that Falco and Gandolfini put on, it is almost jaw dropping.

On one hand, yes, Falco and Gandolfini are brilliant actors in a completely different league than some of these scrubs. But the casting is key here. The supporting characters are very well cast, and they aren't usually asked to do more than their abilities can handle.
 
During Season 5, there is a scene between TS and TB when TS gives TB control of the casino.

During this conversation TS says "let me see what I can do about getting the books opened for you"

The last time those words were used was during season 1 when Christopher questioned why he was not yet made.

Does this mean that TB was not a made guy? The TV reports made him seem like he was.

Ok they answered this question in the next episode. Tony B was not a made guy. Christopher was complaining that not only he got control of the casino but that he was also going to be made.
 
As much crap and criminal deeds that Tony did over the length of the series I found the two most evil ones to be when he whipped Zelman with his belt and when he baited Janet to snap after she was trying to get help for the anger issues.

Imperioli, Drea and Aida Turturro were all pitch perfect for the most part.

One of the examples of how the show, in spite of some questionably segments, never stopped being great. That was a great episode. It's not easy to pull off the send him to the desert to get high and f storyline without flirting with a shark ramp.

Talentless Steve Shirt-rippa does the commentary on the DVD for this episode. He said he and JG did that whole scene themselves, and only needed a stuntman when Tony fell on the table. He said it's not easy going all out in a fight with JG because he has hands like a catchers mitt. :lol:

The hi-jacked poker game.Is it bad to say that if "Sunshine" (played by Paul Mazursky) had just kept his mouth shut that the scene would not have escalated?If he had not antagonized the situation, then maybe it all plays out differently.

Oh, for sure. He annoyed Jackie Jr.Speaking of Jackie Jr. I still can't find A.J. Soprano on an NFL roster. I thought he would be a dominant defensive tackle by now, given all the expert tutelage by former All-County linebacker Jackie Aprile, Jr.
 
Weird thing in episode 11 season 1:

Tony's half asleep and in his robe at dinner time. Livia is making him nuts will all her criticisms, and Tony goes back to bed. Watch Tony go up the stairs. I don't know if Gandolfini was mocking zombie movies, but he does the weirdest walk up those stairs.

As I recall, that was the episode where Markazian told Tony that Big Puss was wearing a wire.He was in a daze that whole episode. As he told Paulie, "I've been walking into walls all week."

 
Something occurred to me today. I'm surprised I never thought about it before.

When Jackie Jr. was dating Meadow, he got deep into Tony's doghouse. Tony caught him playing cards at his casino, then he caught him getting a lap dance, then found the gun on him when he gave him the bathroom beatdown.

Then Little Lord ####pants comes over to the house on Christmas morning to give Meadow her gift. He talks to Tony in the kitchen. Tony's disappointment is evident, and he ends the conversation by telling Jackie that he hasn't decided what he was going to do with him.

At this point, don't you think it would be a good time for Jackie to do whatever it takes to get back on Tony's good side? Maybe something like... sharing some information? Jackie Jr. was with his Uncle Richie in Junior's kitchen when they were plotting to kill Tony. We saw Junior tell Tony in the doctor's office what Richie was planning, and he claimed he tricked Richie into thinking he was along for the ride ("So you're like a double agent, huh? F##kin Matt Helm?"), and he insisted that Richie was acting alone.

It would have been an interesting plot twist if J.J. confirmed to Tony that Junior was indeed the point man on the murder plot.

Despite the fact that the Hair Apparent was going to Rutgers and was going to be a male model....I don't think he was very bright.

LOL. It was Christufah who could have been a male model, or a writer. But only from a position of GREAT wealth!Jackie Jr. wanted to design men's clothing. You know, like Hugo Boss.

Either that or get shot in the head by Vito in Boonton.

 
Yeah, Jackie wasn't very smart. Plus, he seemed to eventually buy Tony's story that Richie went into the witness protection program (in the scene at Artie's restaurant in Fortunate Son), so he has no idea what the resolution to that conflict was, other than his uncle flipped (which he was conned into thinking). Plus, ratting on Junior (who was still technically the boss, and would have been talked up in very high regards to Jackie by Richie) to Tony could have been a death sentence for him. But really, Jackie was just stupid. :lol:
