nice thread. Going to New Orleans for the first time in a couple of weeks for 3 days. Already talked to Tipsy and going to check out his restaurant. Staying at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside.Any must do's in our short time? (sunday morning 20th to wed morning 23rd).Sounds like The Joint is a place we should try to eat at? Best seafood place?
I've said it before, but I highly recommend K Pauls. The blackened Louisiana Drum fish is amazing.

Warning: gonna have to cab it to the Joint. Get the cab company's phone # b/c it's not a tourist part of town (near the naval base). One of the best seafood places is located right in your Hotel - Drago's. Get the chargrilled oysters ( a few dozen) as appetizers.....also the stuffed lobster is my favorite entree there, but everything is good. Another good seafood option is Acme Oyster House (a few blocks into the quarter)
thanks - probably skip the joint then as we only have a couple of dinners - might as well stick around the area we are in if there are so many options. Will check out Drago's.

I'm going to New Orleans this weekend for the first time in a decade (and first time above legal drinking age) so I'm really looking forward to it.

Will do my best to convince my friends to swing out to Dante's for some grub. Should I mention anything to the hostess? Drop the footballguy's secret password and get a free appetizer sort of thing?

I'm the "hostess". I'll be wearing a skirt. And there is always something extra for FBG's.

ALWAYS??!?!?!
Pretty much. I don't ever remember not giving something away to a FBG. Except Joe...He paid double.

Heading out on Sunday. Whats the best mall to go to for "regular" stores. Anything near Hilton riverfront? Any outlet malls worth checking out?

What about beaches? Too far away?

Whoo-hoo! Posting from my room in New Orleans now. Lost too much money at Harrah's last night, couldn't believe how much the table limits were on Thursday night. Walked along Burbon earlier today, my favorite place I stopped in was Old Absinthe Bar. Seemed like a very locals type place, lots of suits for a Friday afternoon. Strangely enough, I think Bourbon would be a lot better if they got rid of some of the many strip joints and replaced them with bars.

Hoping to hit up Dante's tomorrow night. Headed to Drago's for the charbroiled oysters in an hour or two, will report back. I've developed an affinity for Abita Amber! (Never could stand TurboDog though.)

dont skip the joint. its delicious!!!!

Looks like I may be heading to NO for a long weekend sometime between May-August (flexible at this time). Are there events going on that I should specifically target? Not likely that I can scramble down for the Jazz festival, so interested in other offerings I may be unaware of.
Hmmm...while there are always a ton of different festivals going on in new orleans, typically the major ones avoid the summer months because of the heat. Greek Fest is during Memorial Day weekend, and is a lot of fun. If that doesn't do it, check out http://www.nola.com/festivals/ for some more details. Any specific questions, feel free to post.
Essence Fest is during July 4th weekend.
Or you can opt for the poor man's Essence Fest when the Falcons come to town...
LOLEssence fest is actually a really good time. But very very hot during that time of year!!

:lmao:Limits are high @ Harrah's all the time...that's what the only land based casino can do.

Did you get a Lucky Dog?

Anyone looking do to something tonight, this event is a blast. $30 for 2 hour open bar and food, and then the "pageant" followed by a band.

A pageant parody in which male contestants vie for the coveted title of Mr. Legs. The winner is the contestant that raises the most money through pre-contest solicitations. Prizes for the top three contestants, best costume, and hairiest, sexiest, and skinniest legs will also be awarded. Call Wayne Olivio at 522-2124 ext. 13 for information or to be a contestant.
Nothing like New Orleans to put on an open bar to raise money for recovering alcholics

Oye, got so used to staying up on Bourbon Street or Harrah’s the last few nights that I couldn’t get to bed until like 2 or 3 last night. Overall verdict is that New Orleans is an excellent vacation spot and one I won’t hesitate to visit again in the future.

Huge :lmao: to Dante’s Kitchen! The food was amazing, both the BBQ Shrimp and the Shrimp and Grits were excellent appetizers. I can honestly say that was the first time I’ve had grits in probably over a decade (as I hate them) but those have me seriously rethinking my position. I got the parmesan crusted pork loin which was very tasty and cooked perfectly. My friend got the lamb chops which I tried and it was the best lamb I’ve ever tasted. Most places over cook lamb, but this was melt in your mouth goodness.

Tipsy was an excellent host and thanks so much for the Abita Ambers on ice! Don’t take it the wrong way that we didn’t eat much of those extra sides you comp’ed or got any dessert, we were all stuffed! Will definitely go back the next time I’m in town for vacation.

And a big, double :lmao:  for seating that party of 8 or 9 hot girls in the same room with us! My coupled up friends enjoyed laughing at their MTV/Valley Girl conversations, but as the only single guy at the table, I really enjoyed the extra eye candy! :)

Those girls were at least hot....they were the worst table of the weekend however....split entrees, no apps, not many drinks...and 8 different credit cards. But at least they were hot.It was good meeting ya and the other 2 FGB's that came in this weekend. Still waiting to meet gamblor & his tonight. Dante's: The official restaurant of FBG's in NOLA. I should add that to my website.

We got back today and had a great time. Thanks for all the tips from everyone and especially to Tipsey for some great hospitality. The food was awesome everywhere. Went to Acme, Mothers, cafe du monde,Dragos and had a fantastic meal at Dante's Kitchen. Tipsey also was gracious enough to give me the real Katrina tour and took me to the Joint for lunch.

One interesting touristy thing we did was a segway tour which was a lot of fun. It was very hot and humid - dont go down without your goldbond.

Thanks again to Tipsey for the great hospitality. :goodposting:

Good to meet y'all and my pleasure!

Hey guys, I'm hoping to go to NO for the 49ers game Sept.28. I'm just wondering if it's necessary to rent a car. We'll be staying near the French Quarter, and I'm hoping to avoid renting the car.

Absolutely no need to rent a car. Cab ride is 20 minutes from the airport. You'll be able to walk from your hotel to anywhere (quarter, bars, restaurant, dome, etc) from your hotel. What hotel are you staying at?

After a quick look, leaning towards the crowne plaza. Nothing in stone though. Thanks for the response that I wanted to hear. :goodposting:

We don't have enough for a NOLA FF league, do we?
We should, I think. Here's my short list:Doug B

Tiger Fan

Chris Cooley Fan

Tipsy McStagger

Afro Samurai

saintsman (lives in Houston?)

Forgetting some people ... there's also some Saints fans that pretty much only post in the Shark Pool. Gotta go over there and get some names.

Hey guys, it's almost certain now that I'm going to New Orleans from Sept 36-30. Right now the two hotels I'm leaning towards are the Sheraton or La Pavillon. Both appear to be located centrally, but La Pavillon seems a little further out of the way. I'd prefer La Pavillon because it seems more New Orleans than the Sheraton, and is a bit cheaper. How is the location? It says 4 blocks from the French Quarter, is that further or closer to the dome than the Sheraton? Is it a safe walk from the French Quarter late at night? I plan on a late night or two and won't be renting a car.

Also wondering if any of you are going to the game. I'd love to know the best place to tailgate, my GF has never been to a football and I want to show her the full experience.

All info would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to re-read this thread for ideas.

La Pavillon is close to the Dome, but a good hike from the Qtr. Also tailgaiting at the Dome sucks, Tiger Fan may help you there, as I don't goto many games. Sheraton is a block away from the qrt. And close to Harrah's. If your into late not partying Harrah's is good. You can PM Tiger Fan Tipsy or Myself. We'll all be glad to help you out. And I'm always up for a drink :wall:

Thanks. Is walking around he quarter at night safe? I assume it is but want to be sure.

I'm looking at booking through expedia and they offer shuttle service to and from the hotel for $64.16. Would that be worth it or should we just take a cab?

Yes as long as you aren't alone on a street where nobody else is. And just tell people to go away if they start to approach you. The FQ is safer now than it ever has been, but like any city with tourists....they get targeted from time to time.

Go with the cheaper one....they are both the same when you go to sleep....Pavillon is just as corporate feeling as the sheraton but a little fancier.

Thanks Tipsy and Cooley. The prices are similar so I'll probably stay closer to the quarter at Sheraton. I'll probably be tossing out a few more questions as I'm really looking forward to this trip. Been a huge Saints fan my whole life(got front row tickets  ) , and me and my GF love to eat so we should have a great time.

Go to K Paul's. You won't regret it. (As well as Dante's, of course).

Dante's is so overrated.

Looks like Tipsy/Cooley covered everything. Looks like y'all should have a blast. Stay on the main streets and you'll be fine

For anyone wanting to stay in the quarter, Ive been finding the best rates at Iberville Suites (Discount part of the Ritz Carlton a block off of Bourbon) - you can usually get a suite with a sleeper sofa for 100-150 - 4 can stay without a problem.

Hey all, my trip is less than a week away and I'd figure I'd run a couple things by you guys. Made reservations for Arnaud's for Sunday evening, should be good. Mainly what I was wondering was if anyone has been on the natchez boat tour. I'm planning on making reservations for the dinner jazz cruise but wanted to check in here first. And for Tipsy, I was planning on taking the St. Charles streetcar to dinner, that gets me to your restaurant right? BTW, Frommer's speaks highly of your restaurant, but I'm sure you're aware..

never been on the boat tour.....do you have a link?

The street car is nice...but make sure you get on the right one coming uptown. You are going to want to get off one stop after the streetcar turns off of St. Charles onto Carrollton @ Maple St. We are two blocks from there.

Come hungry!

The Frommers writer & I have talked several times over the years. She loves this place.
