Games Between QBs with Both Having Multiple SB Rings (1 Viewer)

The Jerk

Footballguy
I've found five games in which the starting QBs each had won two or more Super Bowls as starters.

Three of them occurred in 1979:

Janury 21, 1979/Super Bowl XIII: Pittsburgh/Dallas (Bradshaw 2, Staubach 2)

October 28, 1979: Dallas @ Pittsburgh (Staubach 2, Bradshaw 3)

December 30, 1979/Divisional Playoffs: Miami @ Pittsburgh (Griese 2, Bradshaw 3)

The first such matchup was November 14, 1976: Miami @ Pittsburgh (Griese 2, Bradshaw 2)

The final such matchup was September 22, 1985: SF & LA Raiders (Montana 2, Plunkett 2)

Does anyone know of any similar matchup that I missed?

Are any of these games incorrect?

Brady and Roethlisberger are now eligible to become the next such matchup. Unfortunately, it can only happen in the post-season in 2009.

Edited to specify SB rings in title on Nov. 4, 2012.

 I specifically checked for Griese/Staubach matchups in 1978 and 1979 but somehow I managed to miss it.

To reset, there have been six games that featured starting QBs who both had won at least two Super Bowls as starters.

November 14, 1976: Miami 3 @ Pittsburgh 14 (Griese 2, Bradshaw 2)

November 5, 1978: Dallas 16 @ 23 Miami (Staubach 2, Griese 2)

Janury 21, 1979/Super Bowl XIII: Pittsburgh 35/Dallas 31 (Bradshaw 2, Staubach 2)

October 28, 1979: Dallas 3 @ Pittsburgh 14 (Staubach 2, Bradshaw 3)

December 30, 1979/Divisional Playoffs: Miami 14 @ Pittsburgh 34 (Griese 2, Bradshaw 3)

September 22, 1985: San Francisco 34 @ LA Raiders 10 (Montana 2, Plunkett 2)

In addition, there have been ten games that featured five rings (again won as starters). Two of the games are listed above; the other eight are:

September 7, 1980: Houston 17 @ Pittsburgh 31 (Stabler 1, Bradshaw 4)

December 4, 1980: Pittsburgh 0 @ Houston 6 (Bradshaw 4, Stabler 1)

October 26, 1981: Houston 13 @ Pittsburgh 26 (Stabler 1, Bradshaw 4)

December 3, 1990: NY Giants 3 @ San Francisco 7 (Simms 1, Montana 4)

December 26, 1993: Kansas City 10 @ Minnesota 30 (Montana 4, McMahon 1)

November 6, 1994: LA Raiders 3 @ Kansas City 13 (Hostetler 1, Montana 4)

November 20, 1994: Cleveland 13 @ Kansas City 20 (Rypien 1, Montana 4)

December 24, 1994: Kansas City 19 @ LA Raiders 9 (Montana 4, Hostetler 1)

November 14, 2010. New England Patriots at Pittsburgh Steelers. If Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger both take the field in this game then we will see our first matchup between two quarterbacks with multiple Super Bowl rings since September 22, 1985. Will Roethlisberger still be a Steeler? Will he be on suspension? In prison? Or does history happen?

I made an attempt to count up all games matching up QB's with two or more rings in the pre-Super Bowl era as well. There were a lot more back then but most of them involve just four quarterbacks. The very first NFL contest ever between quarterbacks who'd each won two NFL title games came on November 21, 1943, when Sammy Baugh's Washington Redskins topped Sid Luckman's Chicago Bears 21-7. Luckman got revenge a month later in an even more historic game, the 1943 NFL Championship Game, where he became the first QB to win three titles. The two men played seven times in all after each had won a second title.

11/21/43 WAS 21 CHI 7

12/26/43 CHI 41 WAS 21 NFL Championship Game

11/18/45 WAS 28 CHI 21

11/17/46 CHI 24 WAS 20

10/26/47 CHI 56 WAS 20

11/28/48 CHI 48 WAS 13

11/20/49 CHI 31 WAS 21

Coincidentally, Bart Starr and Johnny Unitas also matched up seven times after each man had earned at least two rings.

09/29/63 GB 31 BAL 20

09/20/64 BAL 21 GB 20

10/18/64 BAL 24 GB 21

09/26/65 GB 20 BAL 17

09/10/66 GB 24 BAL 3

12/10/66 GB 14 BAL 10

11/05/67 BAL 13 GB 10

Unfortunately, injuries to Starr, Unitas, or both wiped out several more potential meetings including the 1965 playoff tiebreaker game that would have been the only postseason matchup in their classic rivalry. Tommy Thompson won back-to-back titles with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1948-1949. He played one last season in 1950 and squared off twice against Sammy Baugh’s Washington Redskins. At the time of the first matchup the aging Baugh had actually been benched but he won the job back by the time of the second meeting. Thompson's Eagles still crushed Baugh and the Redskins.

11/12/50 PHI 33 WAS 0

So that makes 15 total matchups between QB's who won multiple-championships pre-Super Bowl. But there might be a few more. Arnie Herber's actually the first man to ever twice quarterback a team to victory in the NFL Championship Game, leading the Green Bay Packers to titles in 1936 and 1939. He retired in 1940 but during WWII he came out of retirement to play for the New York Giants in 1944 and 1945. The Giants played Baugh’s Redskins twice in both of those seasons.

12/03/44 NYG 16 WAS 13

12/10/44 NYG 31 WAS 0

10/28/45 WAS 24 NYG 14

12/09/45 WAS 17 NYG 0

But I can't tell from the available information if both men actually played QB in all four games. According to the boxscores at Pro Football Reference, Baugh tossed a TD in the first, third and fourth matchups with the Giants, and Herber only threw for one in the second matchup. Baugh started only 4 games in 1944 (he was busy with his cattle ranch that supplied beef to help the war effort). So Baugh might have missed that second 1944 matchup with New York. Meanwhile, Herber’s credited with starting only 3 games in 1944 and 0 in 1945. So I have no idea if which, if any, of the 1944-1945 Giants/Redskins matchups count as games matching up two-time champion quarterbacks. Note: I didn't count AAFC or AFL titles.

Time to update the list. After 25 years without a matchup between QB's with two or more rings, we've got a historic matchup in consecutive seasons. With the same two QB's. It's that time again! One of my favorite topics, although apparently not that interesting to most other FBGs. Nevertheless...

By my research, Sunday's Steelers @ Giants game will be the ninth contest in NFL history that features starting QBs who have already won multiple Super Bowls as starters. Even though it's now occurred the past three seasons, prior to this recent run only one similar matchup had occurred in the previous 30 seasons.

I'm also interested in this topic. I believe this is the first season since 1979 with three active quarterbacks with two or more Super Bowl rings. We have never had four, but that could change if Rodgers, Brees, or Peyton Manning win a second ring this season.

Unless I'm missing someone, I also believe there has never been more than one active QB with three rings as a starter. That could also change this season if the Giants or Steelers win their third recent Super Bowl.

Based on the apparent lack of interest from everyone else, perhaps we should get a room.Did you write an article/blog post concerning this a few years back? I thought I saw something written by you when I did an Internet search a couple of years ago. It made me smile.

Just read that the 2004 QB draft class is the only one to have produced more than one multiple-Super Bowl champion. The vaunted 1983 QB class only produced one champion with two total championships (Elway). Of course, that class combined for 11 SB appearances compared to 5 so far from the 2004 class.

Updated list through 2012 regular season (at least):

November 14, 1976: Miami 3 @ Pittsburgh 14 (Griese 2, Bradshaw 2)

November 5, 1978: Dallas 16 @ 23 Miami (Staubach 2, Griese 2)

November 4, 2012: Pittsburgh 24 @ NY Giants 20 (Roethlisberger 2, Eli Manning 2)

Here we go again. Brady vs. Roethlisberger. The third time these two have faced off as multiple Super Bowl winning QB's. And the first time any such QB's have played each other more than twice.

Also a record 4th straight season with this type of historic game after a quarter century without one.

Brady beats Roethisberger in just the tenth game featuring multiple Super Bowl winning quarterbacks.

As those two plus Eli Manning are the only active multiple Super Bowl winning QB's it seems extremely unlikely there will be another such matchup this season. Next season does not set up for any regular season games between any of those 3 QB's either. The odds of another historic matchup would of course improve if a current one-time champion QB wins a second ring this season. Peyton Manning, Brees, Rodgers and Flacco (hypothetically) are still in the chase.

With the elimination of the Steelers from the playoffs last week, there will no postseason matchup this year between two quarterbacks with multiple Super Bowl rings. The last time such a game was played was in 1979.

We have now had four straight seasons featuring a game between QB's with at least two rings. But that streak is in serious jeopardy as I do not believe the Patriots and Steelers face off in the regular season next year or that either of those teams will play the New York Giants. However, three of the four active quarterbacks with one Super Bowl ring are all alive in the NFL's postseason tournament. If Brees, Rodgers, or Peyton Manning win a second ring this year, there will be a very strong chance that next season will have at least one matchup between QB's with multiple rings.

Tonight Peyton Manning can become the 12th quarterback to win at least two Super Bowls. If he can do it, then barring any unexpected retirements, the NFL will for the first time have four active QB's with two or more rings. The 2014 Denver/New England regular season matchup would become the 11th contest between QB's with multiple rings, and for the fifth straight year we would see a historic QB matchup after a quarter century without one.

November 14, 1976: Miami 3 @ Pittsburgh 14 (Griese 2, Bradshaw 2)

September 10, 2015: Pittsburgh 21 @ New England 28 (Brady 4, Roethlisberger 2)

Thanks to Judge Richard Berman, the 2015 NFL opener featured the 11th all-time contest between quarterbacks with at least 2 Super Bowl rings. After a quarter century without any such matchups the trio of Brady, Roethlisberger, and Eli Manning have now combined for 5 in the last 6 seasons and, barring injuries or Goodell-imposed suspensions, we should see another historic battle on November 15th when the Patriots and Giants play.

Roethlisberger has now started in 5 matchups against other multiple ringed QB's, breaking the tie with Bradshaw for the most ever. Of the 11 total games played, 9 have featured a Steelers' QB. Of the 8 QB's on the list, Bradshaw has the most wins: 4. Brady is second with 3. If all goes well for Brady he can tie Roethlisberger for most appearances and Bradshaw for the most wins on November 15th.

There still have never been four active QB's with at least two Super Bowl rings (so close Russell Wilson).

Tom Brady and Eli Manning have played each other before but this Sunday will be the first time they have faced each other since Manning won his second Super Bowl. This will be the 12th all-time contest between quarterbacks with at least two Super Bowl rings.

great bump. never saw this thread unfortunately until this year

November 15, 2015: New England 27 @ NY Giants 26 (Brady 4, Eli Manning 2)

Brady wins his fourth contest in five tries against quarterbacks who have won at least two Super Bowl rings. Only Terry Bradshaw has as many wins. Eli Manning is now 0 for 2 in these battles. Roger Staubach and Ben Roethlisberger have lost 3 each.

This was the third season, after 1978 and 1979, that featured two games between QB's with multiple rings. A postseason match involving any two of the Patriots, Steelers, or Giants would make 2015 the first season with three such games (the calendar year of 1979 had three of these games).

For a few weeks it appeared to be at least a possibility that for the first time ever an NFL season would begin with four active quarterbacks who had won at least two Super Bowl rings. However, Peyton Manning's decision to retire eliminated that possibility. Instead, Manning joins Bart Starr, Troy Aikman, and John Elway as the QB's with multiple rings who never matched up against another QB with multiple rings.  Obviously Elway and Manning retired after winning their second ring.  Starr retired before any other QB won two Super Bowls (though he did match up many times against a QB, Unitas, who won two pre-Super Bowl NFL titles).  And Aikman's only opportunity to play against a fellow multiple-titled QB would have been in 1994, Joe Montana's last season, but sadly the two didn't face each other that year.

Sadly, Ben Roethlisberger's knee injury denied us another helping of history.  Instead of a historic fifth meeting between Brady and Roethlisberger since both became multiple Super Bowl champs, we got Brady versus Landry Jones. Hopefully Roethlisberger will be healed in time to play Eli Manning's Giants on December 4, 2016. Eli is still looking for his first win against another QB who has at least two rings.

I am pretty sure Brady was a 3-time SB winner when Eli beat him in two Super Bowls. ;)

Correct lol. I should have begun my last sentence with the phrase "Since winning his second ring".

The big day is finally here. Eli Manning vs. Ben Roethlisberger. This will be the seventh contest since November of 2010 between QB's with at least two Super Bowl rings. Prior to that there had only been six such contests total.

November 14, 1976: Miami 3 @ Pittsburgh 14 (Griese 2, Bradshaw 2)

November 5, 1978: Dallas 16 @ 23 Miami (Staubach 2, Griese 2)

December 4, 2016: NY Giants 14 @ Pittsburgh 24 (Roethlisberger 2, Eli Manning 2)

Eli Manning loses for the third time and he may have seen his last chance to win one of these historic contests. Brady is 40 and, unless they meet in the Super Bowl, the Giants won't be facing the Steelers again any time soon.

Roethlisberger has now matched up 6 times against another QB with at least two Super Bowl rings, the most ever.  He would need one more win to tie Brady and Bradshaw who have the most wins with four each.

Amazingly, a Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback has started in 10 of the 13 contests on the list and won 7 of them.

Finally! After a 38-year wait we will once again get to see a playoff matchup between two quarterbacks who have won at least two Super Bowl rings.  Only twice before in NFL history have two multiple-ringed QB's faced off in the postseason: Super Bowl XIII and the 1979 Divisional Playoffs. Now the long-awaited third playoff matchup will occur in this week's AFC Championship Game.  Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger have played each other four previous times after each had already won at least two titles but this is their first such matchup in the postseason.  No other QB with at least two rings has played another such QB more than twice.

This is will be the 14th matchup featuring QB's who have won at least two Super Bowls.  Brady and Bradshaw have each won four of the previous 13. Roethlisberger has won three.  So if Roethlisberger emerges the winner he moves into a tie for the lead.  If Brady wins, he stands alone with five.

The Giants and Packers will not meet in the regular season in 2017, so even if Rodgers wins #2, Eli Manning will not get an opportunity there.

The Packers are scheduled to play the Steelers in 2017, so Rodgers will get an entry on this list should he win the Super Bowl.

Okay, this is kind of nerdy, but on November 1, 1992, Mark Rypien and the Redskins faced off against Jeff Hostetler and the Giants. Not only were these two quarterbacks the two most recent Super Bowl champs, but both of them actually had 2 rings (Rypien also got a ring in in '87 and Hostetler got a ring in '86).

If the Steelers win the SB this year, the next Ben/Brady match up will be the first where both QBs have won 3 or more SB.

Yes. I think the thread began discussing only quarterbacks who actually started and won at least two.  There are other games that would have to be added to the list if we counted QBs who earned at least two Super Bowl rings without starting and winning more than one Super Bowl.  I will try to work up a list.  In addition to Rypien and Hostetler, such a list would also feature games involving Marc Wilson, Steve Young, and Phil Simms.

It will be the first matchup of quarterbacks who had won 3+ rings as a starter. (Steve Young and Troy Aikman faced off in 1996 and 1997 when both QBs had 3 rings, though 2 of Young's had come as a backup).

November 14, 1976: Miami 3 @ Pittsburgh 14 (Griese 2, Bradshaw 2)

November 5, 1978: Dallas 16 @ 23 Miami (Staubach 2, Griese 2)

January 21, 1979/Super Bowl XIII: Pittsburgh 35/Dallas 31 (Bradshaw 2, Staubach 2)

October 28, 1979: Dallas 3 @ Pittsburgh 14 (Staubach 2, Bradshaw 3)

December 30, 1979/Divisional Playoffs: Miami 14 @ Pittsburgh 34 (Griese 2, Bradshaw 3)

September 22, 1985: San Francisco 34 @ LA Raiders 10 (Montana 2, Plunkett 2)

November 14, 2010: New England 39 @ Pittsburgh 26 (Brady 3, Roethlisberger 2)

October 30, 2011: New England 17 @ Pittsburgh 25 (Roethlisberger 2, Brady 3)

November 4, 2012: Pittsburgh 24 @ NY Giants 20 (Roethlisberger 2, Eli Manning 2)

November 3, 2013: Pittsburgh 31 @ New England 55 (Brady 3, Roethlisberger 2)

September 10, 2015: Pittsburgh 21 @ New England 28 (Brady 4, Roethlisberger 2)

November 15, 2015: New England 27 @ NY Giants 26 (Brady 4, Eli Manning 2)

December 4, 2016: NY Giants 14 @ Pittsburgh 24 (Roethlisberger 2, Eli Manning 2)

January 22, 2017: Pittsburgh 17 @ New England 36 (Brady 4, Roethlisberger 2)

The first playoff matchup in 38 years between QB's who have started and won at least two Super Bowls turned out to be a bit of a uncompetitive letdown.  The Steelers' loss eliminates the possibility of a head-exploding matchup next year between QB's who would have started and won at least three Super Bowls.  And Green Bay's earlier loss ensures that in 2017 Brady, Roethlisberger, and Eli Manning will remain the only active QB's with at least two rings.

Brady has now won five of these historic matchups and stands alone at the top of the list.  Roethlisberger has started in seven such matchups (3-4), Brady six (5-1).

It is pretty amazing that before 2010 there were only six of these games in all of NFL history (half of them in 1979), and now we have had eight more of them in just the last eight seasons.

As discussed a few posts earlier, the updated list that is the subject of this thread only includes games between QB's who have both started and won at least two Super Bowl rings. [scooter] correctly noted there have been QB's who won two or more rings but who didn't necessarily win any or all or of them as a starter.  So for Super Bowl Sunday here is an addendum to the list to account for all other games matching QB's who had at least two rings at the time (though I am not 100% positive the list is completely accurate). I am using the most expansive definition of "won" possible.  Jeff Hostetler and Mark Rypien were on Super Bowl winning teams as rookies but both were on injured reserve for the entire season.  I have no idea if their teams actually awarded them rings.

September 2, 1991: San Francisco 14 @ NY Giants 16 (Hostetler 2, Young 2)

September 6, 1992: San Francisco 31 @ NY Giants 14 (Young 2, Simms 2)

November 1, 1992: NY Giants 24 @ Washington 7 (Hostetler 2, Rypien 2)

January 9, 1993/Divisional Playoffs: Washington 13 @ San Francisco 20 (Young 2, Rypien 2)

October 10, 1993: NY Giants 41 @ Washington 7 (Simms 2, Rypien 2)

November 14, 1993: Washington 6 @ NY Giants 20 (Simms 2, Rypien 2)

January 15, 1994/Divisional Playoffs: NY Giants 3 @ San Francisco 44 (Young 2, Simms 2)

September 5, 1994: LA Raiders 14 @ San Francisco 44 (Young 2, Hostetler 2)

September 11, 1994: San Francisco 17 @ Kansas City 24 (Montana 4, Young 2)

November 6, 1994: LA Raiders 3 @ Kansas City 13 (Montana 4, Hostetler 2)

November 13, 1994: Dallas 14 @ San Francisco 21 (Young 2, Aikman 2)

November 20, 1994: Cleveland 13 @ Kansas City 20 (Montana 4, Rypien 2)

December 24, 1994: Kansas City 19 @ LA Raiders 9 (Montana 4, Hostetler 2)

January 15, 1995/NFC Championship: Dallas 28 @ San Francisco 38 (Young 2, Aikman 2)

November 19, 1995: Dallas 34 @ Oakland 21 (Aikman 2, Hostetler 2)

November 10, 1996: Dallas 20 @ San Francisco 17 (Aikman 3, Young 3)

November 2, 1997: Dallas 10 @ San Francisco 17 (Young 3, Aikman 3)

There are 17 total games on this list.  All occurred from 1991-1997.  Seven took place during the 1994 season.

Steve Young played in 10 of the 17 games, going 7-3.  There are three playoff games on this list and he was the winning QB in all of them.

Joe Montana went 4-0 in his games. Mark Rypien went 0-5.
