Californian's Rejoice! Your taxes are going UP UP UP! (1 Viewer)

I don't WANT to laugh at all you Californians, but you really screwed yourselves today. Will you never learn? Seriously?

http://www.businessinsider.com/calstrs-pension-vote-2010-11

California recently got its budget situation under control, but everyone figures the state is still in serious financial trouble.

And this news won't help, though it was probably inevitable.

According to the Sacramento Bee, CalSTRS (the big teachers retirement fund) is set to vote on Friday whether or not it should reduce its annual investment returns estimate from 8% to 7.5%, a move that will add hundreds of million to state debts (since the pension is guaranteed, and public taxpayers are on the hook).

That would be a huge decision, if they do it. 8% has been the level set since 1995 (talk about a whole nother era), and artificially high return estimates are how the pension systems aren't (on paper) even more insolvent than they already seem.
:bag:
This seems like a major conflict of interest. That being said, I don't plan on owning property in CA when the pension time bomb really starts to hit.

Great point. The Democrats and the Unions will own the budget. The state is going in the tank and Meg or any other Republican could fix the budget at this point in time. In order to fix this problem you would have to destroy the public unions and their pensions. It ain't gonna happen. Nobody is that powerful. You can't really raise taxes to fix the budget because businesses are already fleeing California. In order to attract businesses we have to create an attractive business climate for businesses. Ohio knows this and it is advertising and attracting California Businesses in droves. Democrats don't understand the problem and will try and fix the problem by making it harder to business here: Higher taxes and more government regulations. This will be like throwing gasoline on a fire to put it out.
Great post. I'm sure Google, Apple, eBay, Chevron, Cisco, WellsFargo, Disney, Intel, HP, etc. are all on the horn to UHaul making plans to move to Akron.
Care to explain California's net emmigration problem? People were fleeing this state even before the bottom fell out...
Ironically, I know for a fact that at least two of those companies have been actively shipping out jobs for the last decade.

Wow, I'd love 8% forecasted returns, and have the taxpayers make up the difference if it doesn't exactly work out that way!

The only tax that needs to go up is property taxes (well that and a tax on cannabis). Repeal Prop 13.
Whether or not property taxes are the only tax that needs to go up, after tonight a LOT of taxes are going to go up.
Sometimes that's necessary. It will hurt the state in its economic recovery, but the bullet will have to be bitten.
OR we could cut spending. An option that's completely lost on 60% of the state's electorate.

Not that I mean to sound all republican, but considering that CA is already among the highest taxed stated in the union, I'm pretty sure that there are better options. The only bullet that should be bitten is state spending. And yes, that means state pensions as well. Nobody else in this state has anything guaranteed to them. They state workers shouldn't be any different. And besides, when 20% of the state labor force can be laid off at an a given point without the rest of the citizens noticing, I'm pretty sure we don't need them.

No doubt that spending will have to be cut. Pensions and benefits to the public sector will have to be reduced. I have no problem there.

However, saying that taxes are "off the table" is not acceptable either IMO.

Balance the books on both sides of the ledger.

But what about the fact that Californian individuals and businesses already face one of the highest tax burdens in the country? At some point you will have sucked this state dry. The state already has net emigration. Higher taxes will only accelerate that.

We can balance the books by cutting spending only. The economy is struggling right now. Businesses have no incentive to expand in California, much less stay here. Increasing taxes makes that worse. I'm not sure how this point is even arguable.

Good. Maybe the home prices will come down to reasonable levels. This state doesn't need more people. The tax rate and the tax types will have to be looked at.

Perhaps the millionaire surtaxes? Not a great way to keep your most productive citizens when they can jump over the border to Nevada and have an absurdly lower tax burden.

Businesses have little reason to expand or stick around in most places in the US right now.I don't want to turn CA into South Carolina.

You're a math guy, and this math problem isn't difficult. If a successful company (of which there are still many, despite the economy) can make more money elsewhere, they might pursue it. And this isn't a hypothetical. It's happening. And it continues to happen. And as the jobs go, the tax base goes with them.

LOL. You don't get it. The population continues to grow despite the net emigration of American citizens. You're gaining "tax takers" and losing "tax payers.". Enjoy.

Can we start deporting people yet?
That will cost more money than it will save.
We only have to deport people once. We spend $13 billion per year just on education for illegals.
Or just start cracking down on businesses that hire them. Really all you have to do is have people running around the city yelling "La Migra, La Migra" and watch them scatter. Good times, Good times.....
That is the key if you crack down on busness that hire them it will slow illegal immigration fast.

:goodposting:

California elected a leadership team that basically guarantees the state will need a bailout. At the same time, the rest of America voted for a Congress that would deny them one.

So break it down for me like I'm shuke.
More American citizens are leaving the state than moving there, not to mention businesses. More illegals come than the net loss of citizens. So you have a net population increase but the additional people aren't paying more taxes than they're taking in services. So those paying taxes are increasingly subsidizing those who don't pay much in taxes. The end result is higher taxes and less services for those citizens who choose to stay. And that is only going to accelerate now that you only need a simple majority to raise taxes and the global warming bill wasn't suspended.

Prove this to me please.
While I appreciate you saying please, nope. You asked me to explain it to you and I did. You can choose to believe it or not. If you want to verify if that's up to you but I've posted evidence supporting most if not all of what I posted above before. And I know you've read some of those threads. I'm not going to regurgitate it every time you decide you want to see it. Plus, most of it is easy to find on the Internet. You can do your own research if you REALLY care about the issue. But I suspect you're just a Tim clone in which case nothing I'd post would alter your stance anyways.

THERE'S NOT AN OUNCE OF PORK HERE...

Saw a story that CA borrows $40mil per day from the feds to make unemployment payments. Accurate? Don't see a link to the original LA Times piece.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the state owes $8.6 billion already, and will have to come up with a $362-million payment to Washington by the end of next September.

The continued borrowing means federal unemployment insurance taxes are going to increase, upping the annual payroll costs $21 a year per worker.

(11-11) 04:00 PST Sacramento - --

California faces a $25.4 billion budget deficit over the next 20 months - nearly double what some leading lawmakers predicted a week ago - and a solution to this newest crisis is expected to be far more difficult than in years past, the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office said Wednesday.

Declining revenue and lawmakers' past reliance on one-time budget fixes have contributed to the recurring deficit, Mac Taylor, the legislative analyst, said.

California, Taylor said, has a basic choice: Solve the problem now or pass it to future Californians.

I'm sure a car registration fee bump will solve everything, right?

Nearly DOUBLE what some folk were expecting as of a week ago? How are you that far off?

Taxing some pot would sure help.

the additional people aren't paying more taxes than they're taking in services. So those paying taxes are increasingly subsidizing those who don't pay much in taxes.
Prove this to me please.
You really need more proof that California's model of increasing taxes and increasing services doesn't work? I think the better question would be, prove that it does work.

California is borrowing $40 million a day from the Feds (us) just to pay unemployement insurance. The state is in danger of going bankrupt. It seems pretty obvious to me.

You know, maybe we treat pot the same as we do legal prostitution in Vegas. Make weed only legal in California, where it is taxed at a high rate. Make it the experimental lab to see if it would work across the country.I doubt there's more weed sold anywhere else in the United States than Cali, so it'd certainly be a boon economically.

That's not what you said. You said, "the additional people aren't paying more taxes than they're taking in services." I asked you to prove this point. You have yet to do so.

He didn't say it. I did. You should really look who you're responding to. He's simply pointing out the ridiculousness of your obstinance. I've posted evidence showing illegals take more in services than they pay in taxes. I'm not going to dig it up every time someone chooses not to believe it. You can look in the illegal immigration threads if you really want proof.

Sorry I missed that. My apologies, djmich.Your evidence has been a bit less than convincing IMO (most leave out SS payments which will never be cashed in). Furthermore, the economic benefits in the private sector more than offsets any modest difference in the balance on the ledger. Illegal immigrants keep prices for many things much lower than they would be otherwise.

It is next to impossible to do business in California. This is one reason why.
That's funny. I went to work today, just as I've done almost everyday for the past 10 years in Cali. I grabbed coffee at the coffee shop in the basement of my building. I had lunch at Grab and Go Subs. All the businesses appeared to be operating smoothly.

You really think CA has a healthy business climate? Aren't you the one who accused Stat of being nothing but a  earlier today? Cause you're either fishing or less credible than I already thought.
