Rules:

1. With the exception of one category (see below) you can only choose ONE PERSON per pick.

2. You can only choose 5 persons that were born in the United States.

3. There are no racial or "politically correct" requirements in this draft. I would hope that a global draft of persons would be representative of all continents, but it's too much work for me to enforce it. Within the restriction set up in #2 above, it will be entirely up to the drafter.

4. I originally considered excluding Americans from this draft, because of overlap with the previous draft. But I have decided against it. The difference between the two drafts is that in this draft we will be looking at everything from a global perspective. For example, in the American Draft sports category, Babe Ruth was a pretty high selection. In this draft, he probably should not be taken given the limited number of slots.

5. Just as in the American Draft, I am not going to define what "Greatness" means. That is up to the individual drafter to explain, and to the judge to evaluate.

On to the Categories:

1. Leaders This would be the heads of state, whether king, prime minister, dictator, president, etc. The men (and women) who run countries.

2. Military The greatest military leaders/generals in history. Miltary theorists/writers would also be acceptable here.

3. Scientist Would include accomplishments in the realm of pure science. Great mathematicians would be placed here, as well.

4. Inventor Separate from pure science, these people are more famous for having applied science to living (technology).

5. Discover/explorer The brave heroes/heroines who, in the words of Captain Kirk, go where no man has gone before.

6. Humanitarian/Saint/Martyr These people devoted their lives (in some cases sacrificed them) for the betterment of human life.

7. Novelists/short story this category devoted to the greatest fiction ever

8. Playwrights and Poets A combined category, because I did not want to ignore either of these, but neither deserves a category by itself (IMO) so I merged them together.

9. Villain Choose the worst people in history.

10. Athlete Better defined than "Sports figure." Let's limit the discussion to who are the greatest athletes in history from a global perspective.

11. Composer This category strictly limited to the composers of all forms of music throughout the ages.

12. Musicians/Performers The greatest performers of music in world history. For this category and this category alone I will allow more than one person to be drafted at once; I am thinking specifically of modern rock bands.

13. Painter This is limited to the most famous painters in history.

14. Artist/Non painter Could be a sculptor, archictect, even a movie director.

15. Philosopher These people have pondered the meaning of existence throughout the centuries.

16. Religious figures Separate from philosophy, though there may be some overlap here. These are people throughout the centuries who helped shape the faith of mankind. For the purposes of this category, all Biblical characters are to be treated as real people. I don't want to get into any debates as to whether Jesus or Moses actually lived. We'll assume they did in this draft.

17. Celebrities Could be movie stars, athletes, other famous people. These are the ones who everywhere they go, people recognize them.

18. Rebels The people who have rebelled against the norm throughout history.

19. Intellectual May overlap with philosopher, but here I'm looking more for people who have written/argued about politics, human culture, and human interaction rather than broader issues of existence.

20 -22 Wildcard. Anyone you want.

Just for the fun of it, I will offer a prize for this draft: a one year subscription to Footballguys.

First three posts are all set up for now. I deliberately did not set the clock until Monday morning. Take your time, no rush, no pressure to make picks.

Heck yeah! I was actually hoping I'd get the turn, or at lease that I'd be close to one of the ends. Gives me some flexibility.

Let the games begin!

13?

Not too high, not too low.

Will miss out on the absolute cream however.

Still should be plenty available at 13 & 28.

Do you guys believe there really is any advantage ( or disadvantage) in these sort of drafts based on what position you're in? I know that logically there shouldn't be, but intuitively you feel like certain spots are better than others.

i know that in the FF drafts I've been in, I've hated being either two high - two years ago, for instance, I was dreading having the number 2 choice- LaDamian was the obvious #1, but there was no obvious #2, and I figured I'd get screwed no matter what I did. Do you guys have a preference?

Just found out I am skiing Sunday and Monday. :banned: Really hope we get to lucky seven before I leave...

Of course I have a preference. There are a few names that are absolutely dominant in their fields and would define a draft. For some of the categories there are multiple really good picks, but there are 6 absolute standouts here.If I get one at 13 i will be shocked

I am going to throw my name out there again as someone to confer with on picks. Don't have the time or ability to draft myself but willing to help advise someone.

As a judge for "Military", if you wish to know what I will be looking for, here is the following:

(Not necessarily in order of importance)

Strategic grasp and development; tactical leadership in battle; organizational talent; training and development; consistency over a long period of time; winning battles and wars; wise use of resources; wise use of terrain; application of force and mobility, military theory, use of opportunity.

I've conquered the world a few times in CIV III and I do well in Risk. Can I draft myself?

You certainly can. But it's not about what you know, it's about what the judge knows.

I wanted be either first or in the middle-end of round one. No complaints though, I have a pretty good idea of who I'll get at #3.

Why no picks yet? We should be able to get at least 3 round done before the clock goes on.
Doing research and the draft order was just handed down a few hours ago. What is the rush here?
No rush in a mean sense, but let's be honest - research? For the top pick? This should be a no brainer.
It is not much of a no brainer. There are many directions I am going to go.
 you shouldn't follow conventional wisdom...

 Neither should you.

Tim in the other darft I would have found it helpful to also have the draft broken down by category

Leaders

john doe

jane doe

Military

Gen. John Smith

Admiral Jane Smith

etc

I kow its a pain to add one more tracking, but you may want to consider it.

How does the eligibility work? Can I draft someone at one spot and then switch that person to a new category and draft someone else in first spot.

I guess what I am asking is when does the category have to be given?

You can switch categories during the draft if you want . The categories are final only after the draft ends.

maybe not, but then again, you know that I'm going to...(1.2 HULK HOGAN!!! YEAH!!)

This is difficult. I have to pick someone in a category that will get dwindled down before my next picks. I am not positive how my pick will be perceived but I am going to pick with a certain outlook in my mind. I am not going for the popular pick, which I know some will say I should do with this one at least, but I am looking for world impact.

Greatness - to me is thinking outside of the box. Creating or bringing to light something that had not been done before be it thinking, military, whatever... being a revolutionary. Many people are revolutionary in their lives but with each revolution there is a rebellion. So, how does a pioneering revolutionist not fall due to rebellion? It gets copied and replicated instead of fought against... figuratively speaking.

With that said, under the haste of others to get going, I am going to make my pick in a few minutes.

(1.2 HULK HOGAN!!! YEAH!!)
Would the rest of the world know who Hulk Hogan is? (Serious question).
yes. Japan & other Asian countries and, say, England, Italy, & to a lesser extant Western Europe...but they've been doing international shows/broadcasts since very early on...he so shouldn't actually be picked in this draft (and is admittedly marginal at best in the other one), but they do know who he is...

I am picking this person for the impact on the world that this person has had either directly or indirectly. I also am picking this person because the things he is given credit for are being felt today. This person can be argued to have had the most impact on any military mind set ever. Before he was alive there were wars, battles and so on, but those wars, battles, military lacked definition. He gave that definition to what the military is all about... it can be argued. All walks of life have followed the writings of this man. And, I believe, his writings and philosophy have affected more people in the history of the world than any other figure that will be drafted and I mean ANY other person to probably have ever been alive. Who is he? With the 1.01 pick in the World's Greatest Draft... Mario Kart selects:

1.01 - Sun Tzu - Leader possibly Military, Philosopher, Intellectual

The king of Wu tested Sun's skills by commanding him to train a harem of 360 concubines into soldiers. Sun divided them into two companies, appointing the two concubines most favored by the king as the company commanders. When Sun first ordered the concubines to face right, they giggled. In response, Sun said that the general, in this case himself, was responsible for ensuring that soldiers understood the commands given to them. Then, he reiterated the command, and again the concubines giggled. Sun then ordered the execution of the king's two favored concubines, to the king's protests. He explained that if the general's soldiers understood their commands but did not obey, it was the fault of the officers. Sun also said that once a general was appointed, it was their duty to carry out their mission, even if the king protested. After both concubines were killed, new officers were chosen to replace them. Afterward, both companies performed their maneuvers flawlessly. Sima's biography claims that Sun later proved on the battlefield that his theories were effective, that he had a successful military career, and that he wrote The Art of War based on his tested expertise. His descendant, Sun Bin, also became a famous scholar of the military arts.[2]

The Art of War is attributed to Sun, and it was originally called the Sun Tzu Ping Fa (Pinyin: Sunzi Bingfa), or simply the Sun Tzu. It presents a philosophy of war for managing conflicts and winning battles. Contrary to popular belief, it contains not only the writings of the original author, but also commentary and clarifications from later military philosophers, such as Li Quan and Du Mu. It is accepted as a masterpiece on strategy and often referenced by generals and theorists throughout history.[3] Of the texts written before the unification of China in the 2nd century BCE, six major works survived, including The Art of War. During the Song Dynasty in the early 1st millenium CE, the six works were combined with a Tang Dynasty text into a collection called the Seven Military Classics. As a central part of that compilation, The Art of War formed the foundations of orthodox military theory in China. Illustrating this point, the book required reading to pass the tests needed for imperial appointment to military positions.[4]
Why this pick? He is attributed to be the leading thinker in the philosophy of the Taoism religion which today is followed by millions of people, hundreads of millions of people and billions of people throughout history. He is given credit for the philosophy of military thought with the writing of The Art of War although some dispute it, and him, the evidence, of what there is may be found lacking. Lastly, I picked Sun Tzu because I can place him into other categories depending where the draft goes from pick number one to picks number forth and forty-one.Mario Kart

Wow. That is certainly an out of the box pick. And I have to say, a major major reach for the first pick in the draft, when I suspect you could have had old Sun much later.

I first heard of Sun Tzu in James Clavell's marvelous Noble House, probably one of my alltime favorite novels. A few years later, Clavell actually wrote an introduction to a modern version of The Art of War. However, I was NOT aware that Sun Tzu was the leading thinker of Taoism. How many millions of people practise Tao, in comparison to the monotheistic religions? I suspect that at this point it's a smaller number.

Sorry, Mario, I don't like this pick for the first in the draft. I would probably love it much later on.
