MEMPHIS BBQFest > 2023 > 1 Month Away - $100,000 budget due to inflation! (2 Viewers)

Crunch time.. 10 weeks till park opens to the public.

If you're planning on coming and you've NOT already booked your lodging... GET ON IT NOW. Rooms are almost gone and AirBNB seems to be drying up as well.

@TheFanatic has locked in his travel info and will be in the house Thurs>Sat as well.

We're talking with Grill Beast about a small sponsorship to hopefully close up some gaps in budget.
If you're coming down and want to do a Jr Sponsorship, holla at me. ($150 gets you 4 Day park access wristband, Shirt, Koozie, Vip Bar Access, Sponsor Booth Wristband (front of line) access)

Meeting with the AV Company Nolan to go over the system this year, and we're looking at debuting a small Modular video wall this year. Not sure how we're going to deploy it just yet but should be fun.

Not just me. Dad's coming with me.

Not just me. Dad's coming with me.
WOOT! :banned:

I need to get with you, I'd love to do a social pimp out / announcement that we'll have the GrillinFools onsite snapping pics / broadcasting if folks wanted to meet you guys / ask questions / etc. (but mainly just to try to drive what traffic we can toward your site / social platforms.

Lots of ways to do that now. Instagram and FB Live both allow dual broadcasts. And of course, I'll tease out that I'll be heading down there ahead of time and tagging you guys.

Let me look into it this weekend - when announced so much #### was going on in my life that I didn't know if I'd be down here in Dallas or back north - glad to still be here. Likely comes to dollars as I have to be smart about spending as I relaunch life. If I can find an affordable way to get and stay there I'll do it

No worries just trying to get a head count of FBGs :D

You can save money when you're dead. Beer and BBQ for as far as the eye can see awaits.

After enough beers, it's as far as the drunken eye can see. Just ignore that river thing off to the one side.
I am amazed that more folks don't fall into the river. There is zero fencing. If you walk out the front of our booth there is a 8' wide sidewalk, then the grass immediately starts sloping downward gradually, then abruptly. There are some boulders... then water. Fast moving, mile wide water.

Given the average BAC at this festival is WELL above the legal limit, i'm shocked there aren't more issues. The massive music festival held on the same spot 9 days beforehand does have large fencing along the river, however.

So you're saying the park administrators believe that the BBQ crowd is more responsible than the music crowd. Me thinks this is not going to end well. I might have to go for a dip this year.

We are hitting full stride now with preps. 6 weeks until the park opens. I've been doing a poor job of updating given the new job blocks FBG, and I've been too busy.

• We're finalizing those last couple sponsorship deals trying to get that cash shored up.

• Ms June 2016 Playboy Venezuela has moved, forcinga replacement unfortunately. Her replacement JoJo is a firecracker herself though.

• We're investing in some sort of Pro DMX lighting controller where you program in all the gear you have, and it reads the waveform files of the songs being played and intelligently controls the entire lighting system automatically. For when we don't want to #### with it.

• We are contracting out to a professional London Voiceover artist (woman with a sexy ### voice) to record some "Drops" for the DJ to punch in while blending between tracks. These will be produced with effects and such on part with top radio stations and nightclubs.

• We've opted to contract the illustration for the shirts to a guy from Belarus to try to capture that Eastern European flair we're going for (host country is Czech Republic this year).

• Switching to Colombia PFG comp day shirts. They are being embroidered by Team World in NY, gratis. They're also handling all our "Team Player" (team only), and "Czech Yourself" booth shirts, gratis as part of a sponsorship arrangement.

• We have a Team Cookout this saturday for team, significant others, the bartenders, our videographer, and a couple select sponsors. The menu will feature texas style brisket, shoulder, comp style pork ribs, texas style beef ribs, pork tenderloin, Prime Filet Kabobs,... and an assortment of other goodies.

• At said cookout we will be breaking in the new Saber grill. The local head of their marketing firm will be on hand drinking whiskey and documenting some of the cooking with photos to use at their national sales meeting in a couple weeks.

• Budget is looking okay... not in perfect shape, but we have 2 more irons in the fire and just need one to come through.

• Memphis in May has the annual "Team Day" downtown on Sunday, where teams pay for services (electric, santitation, etc), pick up wristbands/tickets, pay for ancillaries, etc. We will be starting with brunch downtown at 11am for 3 hours before the team day meeting. Ideally we will NOT be so drunk as to forget to register for ancillary entries... thereby mandating a panicked bribery of catering Central BBQ for the entire Memphis in May office to get them to accept our late entries.... not like that happened LAST year or anything....

• We are next door with Memphis Fire and Paramedics again   . They have upped their stockpile of IV supplies from last year. In addition we have another 20 banana bags and accompanying needles/tubing donated by a buddy who runs three pediatric clinics. I think it's safe to say I'll be taking at least a bag of fluid a couple mornings during the festival.

So yeah...we're still idiots. Can't wait to throw down with my Saucepect GB's @sbonomo and @tipsy mcstagger, with our Memphis Fire GB @Tusken Raider next door, and of course @TheFanatic who will be down from St Louis!

####loads more to do... banners, cups, koozies, LED Wands, etc will all be ordered this week.

Tick tock tick tock!

I jumped without a parachute heading to MiM without anyone sponsoring me, and it looks like I found at least one sponsor. And on top of that, I very well might get to hang out with one of the few big names in BBQ that I have not met and someone my dad thinks is the best. More on that soon.

I was good just going down and having a blast with the Saucespects and some other folks I know who will be there, but if I can mix in some business, I would be giddy.

Things are coming along great!

We had a team cookout last Saturday that got a little out of hand with regards to what was cooked:

https://www.facebook.com/usualsaucepects/videos/1753269604694758/

17lb prime beef brisket

~27lb baby back ribs

14lbs beef ribs

8lbs pork shoulder

8lbs pork loin

12lb Prime Filet as Beef kabobs

plus lots more as sides and whatnot. Suffice to say there were lots of doggie bags despite there being ~30 guests.

Also looking at flying in authentic an entire Japanese A5 Kobe Ribeye roast from Japan for the festival (beef entry and team/sponsor snacks).

Still waiting on final art revisions for the shirt but should have that this week.

Every year, at the start of the football season, I do a tailgating at home party. Everyone brings beer and $20. Dad and I create the menu and serve 5-6 courses, almost all of them meat. Two years ago, I learned that meat sweats was a thing and not a myth. Started with burnt ends and then three of those value packs of wings, then went to three slabs of ribs, then an entire beef tenderloin and I can't remember the other course. I almost called in sick the next day. I woke up more than once in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat. I think I should work on that doggy bag route next year. We had only a handful of wings leftover. #IHaveFatFriends

  I love it

Sounds like one hell of a cookout

Every year I tell myself I'm going this year. And every year, I don't. Unfortunately I've got too much going on right now. Good luck, everyone!

Next year I'll be there!

3 weeks to go / 20 days to go.
HUGE potential developments:
• ALSCO jumped on board to provide logo'd scraper mats, anti-fatigue mats for kitchen/bar crew, logo'd chef shirts and aprons for team, bar and kitchen towels, gloves, etc..... all for free, just to put their logo on our Sponsor video reel.

• We have ordered the Japanese A5 Waygu Ribeye... 11.5lbs of it for $1300 shipped     It will be amazing.

• BIGGEST DEVELOPMENT: We are currently in talks with the highest levels of Univ of Memphis athletic Department about getting new head coach Penny Hardaway to engage in a Steak Cookoff vs his Assistant coach and Grizzlies legend, Mike Miller. This would be Emcee'd by Grizzlies play by play guy, Eric Hasseltine and his former Producer Bash (who's on our team). Eric is joining a couple key boosters and media folks who are well connected with the coaches and university in going to bat for us to push this. Mike miller reportedly likes the idea. We are handing off a formal proposal to be put in front of Penny.

For those who don't know... Penny and Miller are effectively walking Gods in this city right now. Not sure there is a hotter name to have at your event. The fact that we are this close to pulling this off is shocking to me. It will be the biggest PR stunt in festival history. Festival Directors are 100% on board and are offering us carts to escort the players, etc. They will also tap thier media resources and have tons of cameras down there. We'd expect significant crowds so we will have County SWAT officers securing the front of the booth.

Saber Grills (provided us a very nice IR Stainless grill) is 100% on board and will send a second grill as soon as we get green light. This would be a huge PR coup for them as this is a Weber corporate event. All these cameras will be showing the city's two hottest names cooking on Sabers in the heart of the World Championship of BBQ.

Security and guestlist will be insanely tight for this if it happens. We will have multiple 70" flatscreens and our new LED video wall showing live footage of the grilling out to the crowd outside the booth (the players will be positioned at the very front looking out over the crowd and river as well).

Things are going great, otherwise. PODS gets loaded next saturday. They screwed up and are giving us a 16' instead of a 12'..which will be a huge problem space wise in fitting with our smoker behind our booth... but working out details for that onsite.

Crazy times....  if this cookoff goes down, we will be instant legends.

WTF at that Waygu ribs price?  For the love of all that is holy regular ribs are freaking awesome.  How much better could these possibly be?
That price is an steal for legit Japanese A5 Kobe Waygu Beef... even within A5 grade Japanese Beef, there are grades of sources who get pick of the litter so go speak. This will reportedly be an obscenely good cut of beef.. with full paperwork / traceability.

So how much pressure is on the guy who has to cook that beef?

Soooo......

This has moved up the food chain and now Athletic Director Tom Bowen is on board. He loves the idea, but wants “both his coaches” on board... meaning Penny (basketball) and Norvell (football) facing off.

He told us he was going to be on a plane with Norvell Sunday and will pitch it to him... and has a meeting with Penny Tuesday and will do the same. He’s given us his “batphone” and Private email address.

Well... THEN I happened to be in Tunica tonight wifh my better half and Called up a buddy who’s Director of VIP services for Harrahs here. I’m in a fantasy league with him and he’s close enough with Deangelo Williams that DWill named my buddy his daughter’s godfather. I got him up to speed and he said DeAngelo is in, and said he was meeting up with him and Norvell tomorrow at an event and told me to come to chat them up about it ahead of the Tom Bowen meeting.

Soooooo today I’m apparently sitting down with DeAngelo Williams and Mike Norvell to lock this in..... no pressure.

If this happens now, it looks like it might be the Mount Rushmore of Memphis Athletics:

Cookoff Between Penny Hardaway and Mike Norvell.

Judged by DeAngelo Williams, Mike Miller, and ????

Emcee/Play by Play by Grizzlies radio guy Eric Hasseltine

Today is possibly a make or break day for this...

Good luck, I would suggest a few bumps and a couple of scotches before the sit down. That should put you in an ideal state to make your pitch and close the deal.

I just want to say Good Luck, we're all counting on you.

But seriously, that's pretty amazing!

Met up with Coach Norvell and Deangelo briefly yesterday. My buddy who is very close with Deangelo is also apparently tight with Coach as well. He pulled us over amidst a horde of media and fans and introduced us.

My buddy told Coach “these guys have the best booth down at BBQfest. Tom (Bowen) is going to talk to you about it tomorrow but these are the guys behind the booth you’ll be going to” He and Deangelo were both all smiles and like “hell yeah, sounds good”. We chatted very breifly then let them go as folks were pressing to meet them. Short and sweet but we left with a very good feeling about it.

Today Coach Norvell and Tom Bowen are flying somewhere and will talk it thru. We get an update tomorrow from Bowen’s assistant. Then Tuesday he will pitch Penny on it for the final piece of the puzzle. Nothing is locked in yet, but getting a damn good feeling about this.

We are now starting to work through logistics like how we will secure a walkway through the crowd for 20ish booths North of us who will be walking their ancillary entries to the judging tent from 1-2:30pk that day. We need the crowd mostly dissipated by 5pm so our sponsor dinner guests can get into the booth.

Who knew an AD and coach needed private time on a plane to discuss possible eating bbq? No wonder these guys get paid so much, no time for ribs.  :D

From what I understand, they had prior plans so Bowen just is using this as face time to talk over it. But yah... it’s kinda funny.

This is all kinda crazy... it’s hard to convey the cult-like popularity of Penny, and a lesser extent Norvell, in this town right now. I don’t know of any public appearances where they’ve shown up together like this. This will be big news IF it happens. @Tusken Raider‘s Booth next door will have a great view too.

Hey! Thanks man but I think we are likely to just be selling them at the booth. If we end up with a surplus I may open it up on here. I already owe Keerock a couple from past years ?
XXL if one slips through the cracks

thanks

This is going to be sooooooo Epic. I know you got this, Icon.

Wanna go to the Smithfield party Thursday night? Melissa Cookston is hosting. She's a friend and also a client. I trained her on how to crush Instagram. Smithfield reached out to me today to ask if we could do something similar to the Royal (they paid me to attend and picked up my hotel and took care of my media credentials which got me into every party!). Melissa is a spitfire but if she likes you, she's phenomenal.
