12 Team IDP League Draft Strategy

Recommended Posts

I'm drafting in a 12 team league this season that uses IDP spots as well as an IDP flex. We don't draft until September so our draft order hasn't been set yet. Here's our roster requirements:

1QB

2RB

3WR

1RB/WR flex

1TE

1K

1DL

1LB

1DB

1IDP flex

8 Bench Spots

My thought was to draft 2QB's, 6RB's, 5WR's, 1TE, 1K, 2DL, 2LB, 1DB. Does this look like a reasonable goal for drafting when IDP's are involved? Also what round should I start considering drafting IDP positions?

My league's scoring system is:

Passing Yards 0.04 per yard

Passing Touchdowns 6

Interceptions -2

Rushing Yards 0.1 per yard

Rushing Touchdowns 6

Receptions 0.5 per reception

Reception Yards 0.1 per yard

Reception Touchdowns 6

Return Yards 0.04 per yard

Return Touchdowns 6

2-Point Conversions 2

Fumbles Lost -2

Off Fumble Return TD 6

Tackle Solo 1.5

Tackle Assist 0.5

Sack 3

Interception 3

Fumble Force 2

Fumble Recovery 2

Defensive Touchdown 6

Safety 4

Pass Defended 1

Block Kick 4

I like to stay flexible after the middle rounds, especially when there are flex lineup positions.

I think I'd plan on 2QB/5RB/5WR/TE/PK/DL/2LB/DB with one offensive and one defensive flex drafted wherever the best combination of value lies. I'd tier out 20 IDPs at each position. There's two schools of thought in a league with few IDP starters. Try to press the slim relative advantage by taking stud IDPs early or slough all three positions until late knowing that there'll be very little separation after one or two top IDPs go.

This season, I think you can definitely wait until a number of other teams have taken IDPs. If your offensive group is solid and the IDPs continue to slide, then I'd consider moving on an IDP a little earlier. Unless a guy like Barrett Ruud slides to the 6th or 7th LB off the board, I think you can target a couple of LB2s with big potential, choosing instead to take a top five (or top 2-3 if possible) DL.

my favorite every time. You can never have too much offense. Trade away your excess offense for the hot-hand IDP during the season
