Top 10 KR/PR IDP's looking at 2013 (3 Viewers)

It's looking like McKelvin is the safest pick among starting DB/kickoff returners due to Manning's and Wilson's questionable defensive status/playing time? Is that the consensus? Is Ellis Hobbs going to return kicks in Philly? Is he even starting on D? FPG Depth chart lists Brown as the starter at CB.
I don't follow the situation, but from what I've heard it's Brown/Samuel.I'm not even sure how much KR duty he'll get with Maclin, Jackson, and Demps on the roster.

does anyone know for sure that Mckelvin will return kicks? i kinda think with his fragility that he will only do it as a specialist or when the really need a big return. he's had as many nicks and scrapes as demetrius williams and reggie bush this offseason/preseason

Looks like luck of the draw again this year. I'd get McKelvin though or maybe Josh Wilson because Trufant is injured.

Exactly. Hobbs was soooo nice for IDP owners last year, but things change. he is pretty much off my radar.

It looks like Smith for Denver had some nice returns in the first preseason game, but not sure what his end role will be at this point. He had kick and punt returns, ya gotta figure with crazy Marshall possibly snapping at any minute they want to keep Royal off the returns, which means "someone" will get the job and Smith had much better numbers then the other guy.

Just trying to keep in one place.

What about Leggett for KC? He had some great numbers before getting hurt and has already posted 2 excellent preseason games and in game 2 added a punt return. Any chance he can stick as a punt returned and nickel corner?

Anybody aware of a site that is projecting KR/PR total yardage for IDPs?

Yahoo predicts KR/PR yards for offense, but not IDP...

Just calculate your own. It's not that hard and you're only looking at a handful of players that are worth having.

Nothing I have to add here. Just wanted to "." for future reference. Watching the Josh Wilson and McKelvin situations closely.

This was over in the shark pool....

SEATTLE

Young wide receiver Deon Butler's days as a kickoff return man may be done as Mora indicated he'd likely limit him to punt return duties for now. Butler has struggled on kickoffs in the first two preseason games. Mora said all teams are trying to adjust to the rule change that limits the blocking wedge on kickoffs to two players instead of the old four, which is exposing return men more than in the past. Rather than get Butler hurt, he said "I think you'll see a little less of No. 11 out there catching kickoffs." Mora indicated Josh Wilson would assume the primary kickoff duties during the regular season and Nate Burleson would be in for punt returns at times, though Butler will continue getting a look there.

This is a summary of all the DB returner possibilities that I've seen mentioned:

Antrel Rolle, AZ - Starting FS and looks to get PR duties if Breaston doesn't

Brent Grimes, ATL - Starting CB and seems to be starting PR

Chris Carr, BAL - Starting KR and PR and depth CB

Leodis McKelvin, BUF - Starting CB and KR

Captain Munnerlyn, CAR - Front-runner for NCB and in the mix for PR duties

Danieal Manning, CHI - Either starting FS or NCB and KR

Alphonso Smith, DEN - Starting NCB and KR

Will Blackmon, GB- Starting KR and PR, depth CB

Tramon Williams, GB - Starting NCB, backup KR and PR

T.J. Rushing, IND - Battling for NCB, in the mix for KR and PR

Brian Witherspoon, JAX - Was a lock for KR/PR duties, but now in battle. Depth CB

Patrick Chung, NE - Backup S, in the mix for PR.

Jim Leonhard, NYJ - Starting FS and PR

Justin Miller, OAK - Starting KR, depth CB

Quintin Demps, PHI - Starting FS and battling for KR

Ellis Hobbs, PHI - Battling for KR duty, depth CB

Allen Rossum, SF - Starting KR and PR, depth CB

Josh Wilson, SEA - Starting NCB and KR, due to Trufant injury is starting CB

Ryan Mouton, TEN - Battling for NCB and KR

Thanks man! That is a HUGE help.Any chance of Leonhard taking over for Washington on KRs? Maybe they might want to keep him fresh for the increase in touches he's expected to get?

Update on Manning - link

Danieal Manning remains questionable as he returns from a pulled hamstring, and [special teams coordinator] Toub said he has no problem waiting for the regular season to use him as the kickoff returner. Manning led the league in kickoff returns last season.

Jpeace, those quotes in your sig are freggin hilarious, I hope they were not poted in this forum though... they just seem out of place.

Also, thanks for the Manning update.

So far I haven't heard much word about that happening. The reports I've seen say that the Jets have other people taking KR in pre-season but expect Leon Washington to be the "man" there again. If anyone else does take KR, I would think it would be Danny Woodhead. But Leonhard getting PR duty with a really good Jets defense could be pretty valuable.

Are you sure about Demps in Philly?'

Last I heard Hobbs was the main KR guy, but it still seems like a muddled mess, with so many experienced, talented return men on the team.

Definitely no "locks" in Philly in the return game, with Demps, Hobbs, and Maclin all more than capable of being great.Basically, he was the starter last year and so far there has been nothing out of Eagles camp to indicate otherwise, depsite the presence of those other two.All three of them have taken KR in pre-season, along with Amendola. Hobbs aggravated an ankle injury and hasn't been solid in CB duties, so his best chance of making the roster would be as KR.I updated the "list" for Demps and added Hobbs also, to be a complete picture. Thanks for the catch.

More on Manning, and it's not good. @BearReport's twitter feed:

If Al Afalava continues to perform at safety and Corey Graham keeps doing what he's doing at nickel back, Danieal Manning may lose two jobs.

Is he?
Everything I've seen (games, reports, etc) has him as the top CB besides Bailey-Goodman and playing in nickel situations. Jack Williams missed time with an injury and Smith took the job in his absence, even after he returned Alphonso is still running the nickel spot.Royal will be the main PR, but Smith seems to be the favorite over Eddie McKinley at KR.

Interesting about Alphonso Smith. Never heard of the guy, but of all the players mentioned, he's probably in the situation closest to Josh Wilson's last year minus the starting gig, but Nickel will definitely do if he wins it. Denver's going to turn the ball over a lot in my opinion and that will make an already bad defense worse, they'll get scored on A LOT.

Who does Alphonso Smith play DB like? Also who would you guys liken his KR skills to? I'll have to watch out for him.

Smith is a ball hawk. He is only 5'9" but plays the ball really well and has great instincts. I've heard knocks on him in man-to-man coverage and that he is best in zone coverage. The Broncos traded next years 1st round pick (from the Bears) specifically to take him this year in the 2nd round, so that says alot about what they expect from him.He played every game for the last 4 years at Wake Forest, setting (or tying, can't remember) the ACC interceptions record. I know that one season (I think 2008) he had 8 picks and returned 3 for TD's. He did see some time at kick returner in college, but wasn't a "starter" there. He has struggled to adjust to KR duty in the NFL so far (handling the ball), which seems to be more magnified this season for rookies with the rule changes. Eddie Royal has said good things about his potential in that spot. Probably an equal factor is that the Broncos have had so much off-season turnover that their special teams units (a point of emphasis for McDaniels) are still coming together.Alphonso is very quick and agile and seems like he has the makings of a really good kick returner.

That would be a big, big upset. When you have a rookie QB, a great KR is kind of a nice thing to have. I wouldn't count on Leon losing that job. He's not even the starter, I don't think freshness is an issue.

Patrick Chung, S - New England. Got all of the PR opportunities against the Redskins. Not in the starting lineup as a Safety, but this makes him much more valuable in dynasty leagues if it continues.

It would be nice to have these numbers in the VBD Sheet and let us customize on how many points per how many yards.

The Broncos played all-around football workhorse Peyton Hillis as the starting KR and he did a very good job. He's not going to be taking any to the house, but he won't be fumbling any returns either (knock on wood). So that drops Alphonso Smith to backup KR role. He did return punts in the second half, so he is the backup there to Royal. At CB he made some mistakes that lead to big plays for the Bears. However, I still don't see any challenge from the other CB to his projected NCB role.

who is the Josh Wilson of this year?

Right now in my FA are Demps, D.Manning, and Rossum. Anyone heard if these guys are starting at their defensive position and for sure getting KR or PR duties?

Demps - maybe gettting return dutiesManning - probably getting return duties, but is he healthy, is he starting?Rossum - likely getting return duties, but NOT a defensive starterThe next Josh Wilson is Josh Wilson (Trufant is out, Wilson starts again at CB). Him and Leodis McKelvin are the only sure thing right now as worthy IDP/KR guys.

A healthy Danieal Manning should be the third member of the "sure thing" IDP/KR list as he will at least start at Nickel but possibly Free Safety with KR duty. Will Blackmon, Chris Carr, and Allen Rossum look to locks for starting KR and PR duties on their teams, but none are starting DB's. Blackmon probably has the most upside from a DB perspective. If your looking for an "out of nowhere" type flyer that surprises everyone if injuries occur to the starters:The best bets are:Alphonso Smith, DenverCaptain Munnerlyn, CarolinaTramon Williams, Green BayT.J. Rushing, IndianapolisRyan Mouton, TennesseeBut predicting which of the bunch is just like taking rookie WR's, your just throwing numbers at the problem, hoping to make one stick.

Yeah and here is what Rotoworld said about D.Manning:

Bears FS Danieal Manning (hamstring) returned to full-contact practice on Tuesday.

Chicago is still in the process of constructing its starting lineup, but Manning figures to get the nod at free safety with Kevin Payne on the strong side. That, of course, is assuming that hard-hitting rookie Al Afalava is left out.

What do you think? Sounds like he should be picked up in IDP leagues.

Definitely should be, especially if return yards are counted. Though I haven't heard any confirmed source that Manning will immediately resume KR duty. At some point he should, though as he was electric in that role last season. With him looking to be the starting FS and NCB (probably bring hin Afalava at FS in those situations?) he should be guaranteed lots of tackle and pass-defense opportunities.

Isn't Chris Gamble starting at PR? Not as valuable, but should be on the list b/c he gets a lot of tackles also.

And isn't Leonhard at KR, rather than PR?

No. Leon is the KR. I believe Leonhard is in the mix at PR, but dunno who has the job.
Footballguys need to update their depth charts then =)
I think they do as soon as things become pretty certain. But you're probably right in this case.

Of the big three, how would you guys rank Manning, McKelvin, and Wilson?

Trufant is out, but when he comes back I imagine that will kill Wilson's value.

McKelvin seems to be fairly safe though he's had nagging injuries in camp.

Manning...does he or does he not have the starting safety job? Kick returns?

Personally I like McKelvin as the "safest" bet of the three.Wilson should be second, because even when Trufant is back he will still see lots of nickel-corner time.Manning is third due to his injury concern and the pre-season play of Corey Graham at nickel and Payne/Alfalava at SafetyManning WILL be starting somewhere when he is healthy, just not sure if at FS or NCB or probably both at different times. I think NCB until Tillman and Bowman are back playing at the very least. I'm more concerned about his injury affecting his KR duties than I am his DB duties, at least while his injury lingers.

This bears watching. He'll likely end up somewhere, and possibly still ends up in return duty. Justin Miller is money on special teams.

If we could keep a running top 5 or 10 IDP return Guys on this Fourm that would be great, and as people get cut, hurt or traded we just ajust it.
