Woke in the middle of the night to find a stranger in my apt (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
WTF. :bag:

I'm a heavy sleeper, so I don't know what woke me, but I woke up about an hour ago and crawled out of bed and ran smack into a guy in my apartment outside my bedroom. I was still groggy from sleep so it took me a second to clue in to what was going on; I thought maybe someone had drunkenly walked into the wrong apartment or something, which has happened before. I ask the guy what the hell he is doing in my apartment, he freezes stiff and mumbles something about "sleeping." As I start to wake up a bit more I'm getting annoyed and angry, so I ask him who the hell he is and how he got in here. He tells me his name is "Mike" but I ask again, angrier this time and he says "Mike Schellenberg." It's basically pitch black in my apartment so I can't see the guy but I can tell he is either drunk or scared ####less. I live on the third floor of a three story condo building, and I've been warned about leaving my balcony door open due to the potential fro theft, so I demand he tell me how he got in -- did he climb up? He mumbles something about "his friends." By this time my son has awakened from the commotion and starts yelling for me, and I wake up fully and realize this guy needs to get out of my apartment, now. I tell him he needs to get the #### out before I call the police, escort him to the door, and shove him out.

My son, four years old, was wondering of course what's going on; I told him someone made a mistake and went into thew wrong apartment. My adrenalin is flowing by this point but I needed to calm him down and get him back to sleep. He told me he was scared; I told him it would be okay, it was just a mistake and I'm here to protect him.

So, like I said, WTF. I looked around and nothing had been taken yet. Should I bother calling the police? I think the guy was being honest about his name. :goodposting: I looked him up on facebook and yes, I think this is him, though I never got a good look at him in my haste to get him out of my apartment and ensure my kid was safe. He was just a skinny youth so throwing him out was no problem; right now I'm just glad it didn't get uglier because I realize if the guy had had a weapon or been more serious about what he was doing, both I and my son could have been in a great deal of danger.

I wake up and find a guy in my home.., there will be a beating before any questions. Glad it worked out, you showed more restraint than I would have.

Schellenberg? He owes me money..

Yeah, I really don't know if I handled it right; I'm here by myself with my son so if something bad happened to me no one would even know about it and the poor kid would be helpless. I figure in retrospect it was probably a good idea to keep it from getting physical... At least I got his shoes.

What's pretty funny (not funny for you yet, pill...but give it time) is that this page will eventually be the 2nd highest google hit for "Mike Schellenberg."

Friends of idiot Mike Schellenberg> OMGHI2U

Future potential employers of Mike Schelleberg> Don't hire this dip####. thanks.

:bag: That's Mike Schellenberg of Winnipeg, Manitoba to be more specific, googlebots.

I seriously applaud the restraint shown. I doubt I would have asked many questions before taking a few swings first.

All jokes aside, you should definitely have held him for the police. Given that you didn't do that, you should call the police anyway. If your building has a history of theft, you owe it to yourself and the other tenants to report any incidence of breaking and entering, even if it turns out to be an accident.

Ugh. I was worried someone was going to suggest that. I really don't feel like dealing with the police if I don't have to, but you're probably right. As far as holding him for them, I'm not sure I agree. With a four year old in the apartment with me and no one else around I don't see how it could have gone down in a way that wouldn't have presented at least some risk. No way am I putting my kid in a dangerous situation if there's an easy way to avoid it.

I've been on the other end of this when I used to drink too much in college. I think it played out as best as you could hope for. You were confused, he was confused. He didn't show any agression and left right away.

The obvious internet tough guy answer is to beat ### first and ask questions later.

Fair enough. I didn't mean to suggest that this was automatically the time to be an iTough Guy, so I'll defer to your judgement since you were there and I wasn't. I'd still go ahead and file a police report though. If the guy just wandered into the wrong apartment, no problem; keep his weed and call it good. But you should let the police determine whether that's what happened, just in case.

How did he get in??????????????/
I guess he climbed up the balcony and came in through my screen door, which I left open for air overnight. Won't be doing that again, obviously. So, I called the cops. They'll be sending someone over sooner or later. Sorry, Mike.

If I'd had a bat or something similar I may have attacked him but I didn't even really know why I was awake until I had already run into the guy in my hallway. I'm still glad it went down this way instead. Big lesson learned for me at minimal cost.

I'd say well done, but if it were me I'd probably put the guy on his ### out of pure instinct/reflex/fear. I'd place myself between him and the kids before anything else happened.

PSST, DONT TELL THE COPS THE PART ABOUT THE WEED
lol. imagine how the interaction with cops would go."yes officer, he broke into my place and left behind this bag. it might be marijuana, i don't know because i've never seen that stuff before." "running shoes? oh yeah, he left these here along with his marijuana.""what do you mean have i been smoking? no, he really left running shoes here, i don't wear size 7"

Where'd he get the flashlight? Did he bring it with him or do you leaves flashlights around for a burglers easy access?

I would have beat the #### out of him with my baseball bat...plain and simple...your in my home in the middle of the night with a flashlight...I don't know you...you are going to die if you don't get out now.

I was very scared for drpill when I saw the thread title. So glad it turned out okay.

Not many people would be so cool when they discovered a home invasion. I would have shown the guy my knife skillz with my samurai sword.

Lol @ all the guys saying they would take bats/pipes etc. to the guys head when half of them would be hiding under the bed.

Sure, now that we know it was a stoned Mike Shellenberg, it's easy to say that. What if it was 6'2, 245lb Devonte Johnson with prior convictions and a weapon?

You did absolutely fine. I wonder how different your reaction might have been if you lived in a house instead of apartment. I live in a house on a cul de sac, with my wife and two young daughters. If there was a stranger in our house in the middle of the night, there would be no plausible explanation other than that stranger meant to rob us or do us harm.

If you have a 4 year old son, you owe it to him and yourself to install a home security system. You can get one of these for fairly cheap.

 I'll look into it.

If you apartment allows dogs, a little yappy dog would give you plenty of warning in cases like this. Probably keep Ol' Mike from "wandering into the wrong apartment", too -- not from fear of the dog, but for fear of discovery.

what happens when the police come and they arrest drpill for stealing Mike's weed?
