Joba Chamberlain signed, 1 year $2.5m. I like it.

If he can stay healthy I think he will like the switch in home ball parks.

Tiger fans really #####y this offseason, twitter not liking this one either. By all accounts the stuff isn't the problem with Chamberlain and getting out of NY might really help him. Not sure how signing a guy like this for $2.5mm is any kind of bad.

I think two things:

1) Wasn't Veras $1.5 million better than Joba?

2) The Tigers seems significantly worse than they were last year. Everywhere except defense. And baserunning.

1) Veras is pretty decent but you probably get two for the price of one

ETA: They definitely need another bullpen arm. If this is it, I'm very disappointed. Still a lot of guys out there though, doesn't seem Benoit will be coming back though.

ETA2: Lynn G. Henning @Lynn_Henning 7h

Tigers confirm shopping is complete, save for one more bullpen arm. Dombrowski repeats: It won't be a biggie.

why shouldn't we #####y?

The starting rotation is worse

The lineup is worse

the bullpen? Maybe a push from last year w Nathan in

They shaved payroll, its clear Mr I said, well you didn't win it, cut payroll I wanna make more money

Still can win a relatively weak division and if you make the playoffs anyone can win.

but this team is light years worse than last years

93 wins in 2013, how many in 2014 do you think?

Starting pitching as good as last year

Bull pen interesting with Nathan, about the same as last year

Infield defense upgrade from last year

OF just one player away from being very good

batting lower then last year, but decent

90 wins and they win the central

The defense is better, the starting rotation might not be worse with Smyly in there, and the bullpen is probably the same unless Rondon can be elite for the entire season. Team has less power for sure but much more speed and defense. I don't know what "light years worse" means, but this team on paper is still probably the best in the division. KC is closing though, but they still don't have the pitching we do.

I do find it hard to believe we aren't going to pursue at least one more bullpen arm. We kind of knew we'd lose Fister or Porcello, but it was assumed we would add four bullpen arms, not just three.

I'd like to see one more in the bullpen, maybe Dave D. will address that before the trade deadline. I thought that was an obvious problem in last years playoffs.

As far as the offense goes I'm willing to bet they don't get shut out as many times as they did last year.

Comerica is built for a more athletic team. We may be worse on paper, but on the field I expect us to be much easier on the eyes.

At least until we get to the last few innings anyway.

My opinion is not changed re the approach to building a bullpen from last year. Throw darts, if it isn't working patch up the holes in July, spend $ elsewhere now. Bullpen's are too volatile year to year to invest too much $. Go the quantity route and hope to strike gold.

Curious what our everyday lineup will look like though, immediate thought being

A Jacks

Kinsler

Hunter

Miggy

V Mart

Avila

Castellanos (swap him and Avila/backup vs. lefties)

Dirks/Iglesias

Iglesias/Davis

Kinsler isn't a natural leadoff option, but if A Jacks scuffles again he at least offers a plan B. Lineup isn't great with everyone up a notch, but it's better than a black hole at leadoff. Hopefully they'll run more too.

Didn't Ausmus already say Miggy would be hitting 3rd?

I think it's gonna be:

Kinsler

Hunter

Miggy

VMart

Avila

AJAX

Castellanos

Dirks/Davis

Iglesias

I think by midseason you'd want Castellanos hitting 5th fulltime, then swap Jackson and Avila as appropriate. I really think Jackson will benefit not hitting lead-off and we're gonna see more power from him. I think the biggest if in that lineup is Castellanos, if he can't hit then you have painted yourself in a corner with this lineup. Avila can hit 5th because he has a great eye, but we know AJAX can't and Castellanos we just can't be sure. I really think it's important he starts the season hitting well, we are really leaning on him.

One thing I do think this does is leave the door open for some July trades. You can always scoop up relievers, and maybe a vet to play 3B or 2B and you shift Kinlser to 3B. I think they'll have 14 position players, and 11 pitchers because they'll have to keep Perez because they don't have a backup SS. Avila, Holday, Cabrera, Lombardozzi, Perez, Iglesias, Kinsler, Castellanos, Dirks, Davis, AJAX, Hunter, Kelly, VMART

Bullpen would be Nathan, Rondon, Al Al, Joba, Krol and then Coke, Alvarez, Putkonen, Reed or Ortega among others for the last spot.

I'm keeping my expectations for Castellanos tempered. Expect him to hit in the 7 hole, but if he translates quickly slide him up.

A Jacks not batting leadoff makes sense though. Batting him 6th or 7th makes a ton of sense.

Danny Worth and Luis Marte dropped from the 40-man roster, clear waivers, back to Toledo.

Sounds like the Tigers are expecting Dirksie to have a comeback season. Listening to DD last week on the radio he kept talking about Dirks and how his knee was injured all year and how many spot in the order a healthy Dirks can bat in.

I think Castellanos is the wild card for the tigers, if the kid can play at the big level like he did in the minor's he be money

The Tigers are less talented than last years team. But I do think they will win at least as many games. I think V-Mart will be more productive than Prince hitting behind Cabrarra. The defence will be significantly better. I think the coaching will be better and the bullpen will be more stable. The Tigers blew way too many games especially early in the season when the bullpen was in complete shambles. The tigers will gernerate more runs with base running and hit into fewer double plays. Batting Average, Home Runs and Runs scored will decline. Porcello will have his best year. Max will decline from last years numbers, but will still be one of the leagues best. Verlander will have a much better year. Smyly will be as good a Fister. Sanchez will have a better year.

how exactly will the bullpen be more stable? Smyly wont be in it to help get to the 9th, sure the 9th might be better with Nathan

but who exactly is setting up now?

Most of last year, we did not even have the closer established. I am not sure it will be better, but the roles will be established much earlier. The first half of last year, the bullpen was an absolute mess.

I thought Krol was figured to be in the Smyly set-up slot.

I surprised that the tigers didn't make an offer to J. Crain, Houston signed him to a one year deal, amount unknown. He would of been a nice additional to the tiger bullpen

It seems like the Tigers are more focused on signing Max to a long term deal than Miggy.

Max is up first, right? Miggy has 2 years left.

If Avilia is batting 5th they are in trouble, I cant count how many times last year Avillia would take the first pitch. (fastball down the middle) Get behind in the count and chase garbage. I would try Iglesias hitting second especially if Kinsler plans on stealing more. Hunter 3rd. Miggy 4th V-Mart 5th.

I don't think Iglesias is gonna hit more than .250, I actually would be happy if he hit .250. Seems like a #8 or #9 hitter.

Unlike with Leyland this lineup will need to be juggled a lot, we'll see how Ausmus handles it. It makes sense to have your best hitter hitting 3rd, and running in front of MIggy still isn't something you want to do a lot. Castellanos is going to be key and the vets are going to have to step up.

I STARTED A 2014 THREAD SINCE THIS ONE IS GETTING TOO LONG!!!!!

Iglesias is not a pure .300 hitter. no He had a lot of infield hits. He does make contact though. I think with Omar Vizquel on the payroll Iglesias will be a project of his. I see the Tigers more so playing a more fundementally sound all around game in the upcoming season then in seasons past where Leyland believe in scoring runs by getting hits. Not moving runners over. Not stealing Bases and not bunting. Ausmus is clearly new school. I think the signing of Davis shows that this will be a different kind of lineup.
