Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (11 Viewers)

Your list (plus Dare Devil and Seven Seconds which are both done) are my favorites on Netflix.

Will Haunting of Hill House continue? It seems the full story was told in the one season - but maybe it will be a anthology type series with a new storyline each season?
No clue.  I just assumed.

I recently rewatched one of my favorite recent movies, Hanna. Holds up great.

Was surprised to see Amazon has made it a series...watched the pilot. Stars the two from The Killing, who I like. But maybe because I just rewatched or really liked the casting of the original, it felt a bit off. Mostly- at least so far- it doesn't have the fable/fairy-tale quality of the original that I really liked. But it's not bad, and the overall story could lend itself well to a series.

Went back to a few shows last night rather than watch POTUS speak.

I tried another episode of "Black Sails" and had to stop. It's just not that good.

Marvel's "Runaways" because I'm trying to find a show for my son. Awful.

"Letterkenny" couldn't get into at all. Felt like a canadian Kevin Smith knock-off in some ways.

"Futureman" was quick, almost funny usually. Giving it a second episode or two before deciding.

Regarding the upcoming Disney streaming service and it’s impact on Netflix. Are we talking all the Marvel and Star Wars stuff? Because if that’s the extent, it has next to zero impact IMO.

As someone whose kids consume 10x the Netflix I do, it’s the kids movies like Moana leaving that would be more problematic.

:goodposting:  I just did a quick check and my Netflix watchlist has 72 shows/movies/docs on it and none of them are Disney, Marvel or Star Wars related.

I won't be cancelling Netflix any time soon.

You guys are absolutely nuts if you think Disney's streaming service will have next to zero impact.  I wonder how many kids under 16 you have at home.

I just meant for me. Obviously it will have an impact on many other people, especially those with kids.

I have 2 kids under 16, neither of whom watch anything Disney outside of Marvel movies. Which we can get anytime outside of Netflix or yet another subscription like D+

FWIW, I think Netflix kinda already knows its movies aren't that good.  It paid way too much money to get people like Will Smith and Adam Sandler onboard to try to create some traction.  Not sure it's working.  Bright was o.k. but I have a hard time recalling a Netflix movie off the top of my head that was fantastic.  But let's face it, we also aren't paying $7.50 per ticket, plus concessions to sit down in a theater so that may also temper our expectations of movies.  A lot of the crap that goes to theaters these days are o.k. too. The "blockbusters" so to speak are more often than not franchise movies such as super heroes or star wars, etc....  Or else they are part of the PR machine that overhypes huge budget movies.  I mean, I liked Avatar quite a bit, but a lot of people didn't think it was that great and it grossed elventy billion or whatever, no?

And while Netflix series are probably their bread and butter, their success is also going to be their downfall in this writers humble opinion.  People love binge watching series, especially good ones.  But series take a while to shoot, and as they become more popular, their production costs also rise.  Netflix needs to pump out a huge amount of product here to keep people viewing.  Because let's face it, I probably love 5-10 netflix series, and I like another 5-10 well enough, but there are dozens and dozens and more that I'm either not interested in or else watch a few episodes and say, nah.  So on the say 5 series I love, when they come out, I watch them over a weekend or week.  Then I'm stuck waiting for a year(s) for the next season to come out.  In the interim another 250 series come out.  They have something like 700+ series they are constantly rolling out.  One company.  That's a LOT.  Their cash burn rate is insane.  I do like Netflix quite a bit (probably more so now that I've cut the cable) but I can't see how they sustain this content.  I think they are counting on hitting a few home runs (such as HBO has done with Sopranos and GoT) and then raise their rates.  I dunno
While Netflix will lose people to simple competition and loss of content. We have to remeber there is a generation that is now growing up on Netflix. It's all they know. Now those kids may be watching the Netflix cake show or Lemony Snickets. In 10 years when those kids are in their 20s and start watching the new shows of their time there will be a large portion of those that go back and watch the shows of today that will be considered classics.

Stranger things

Peaky blinders

House of cards (yea i know...)

Netflix will have a large catalog of their own content that may continuously grow, always being ready for the new crop of streamers.

Kinda how like those classic rock bands are still relevant. Teens get into The Beatles or Pink Floyd and there is a rather extensive catalog of music to be enjoyed.

We tried the pilot of Black sails recently...felt like a typical skinemax soft porn show with a bigger budget and pirates. Nope.

I've been pimping Futureman in here without any takers. I compared it to Big Mouth in terms of the smart but crass humor, sci-fi/video game geek oriented here. I really liked it- and it gets more and more insane (in a good way, humorwise) as it progresses, so I hope you stick it out and enjoy it..

When is this Disney thingy lauching, and is there a list of stuff that it will effect?   Seems like they own everything, so I do wonder how much It will effect Netflix.

ETA:  also, one of my grumbles about the streaming vs. cable thing is that there will get to be a point where people will have the impulse to have 5-6+ subscriptions to services and you will be paying just as much or more than you were for cable.  The downside for me now is I have 0 access to sports, so that is also being factored into my equation as well.

RE: Disney -  I'm not sure when they are going live, probably later this year.  But they own a lot of content.  And acquiring Fox will give them Hulu.  They are going to be a major player in streaming service, they can probably roll out a nice bundle including sports and stations etc....like an all-in-one package if they want down the line.

People are going to grumble about all of the subscription packages for sure.  But as I've just cut the cable, here is what I will not be grumbling about:

-Having to reup for 2 year subscriptions and be subjected to early cancellation fees

-Having to 'rent' every device in your house.

My last bill for cable was just shy of $200/month. On top of that I got hit with the following every month:

Equipment & services
$41.92
Service to Additional TV
$13.98
with TV Adapter
Qty 2 @ $6.99 each
Service to Additional TV
$9.95
with TV Box
Internet/Voice Equipment
$13.00
Rental
Service Protection Plan
$4.99
Inside Home Wiring Protection for your Cable TV, High-SpeedInternet and Voice Services

eta.

forgot about $10.00 broadcast tv fee and $8.00 regional sports fee every month

eff cable

Now, I bought my own modem and router.  I need no cable box or internet/voice equipment.   I have three subscriptions which cost be $65/month (however, I already had two of those WITH cable, so just one new one at about $40/month).  I'll recoup my outlay of costs in about 4-5 months and then save $130/month.  Oh, and I can cancel any subscription I have at any time with no charges.

I probably will not be getting Disney streaming, but I do think they are going to have a massive impact on streaming.

Disclaimer, I own DIS, I don't own NFLX.  I subscribe to Netlfix and enjoy it very much.

Oof, I could definitely see it being well worth it then.  I think ours was about $70-80 (a little more when I kicked in HBO to watch GOT for a couple months).  So when I am looking at 3-4 of these subscriptions, it is starting to be about the same price and I lost access to all sports besides what's on my local/HD antenna.

That's one of the reasons I went to Netflix in the first place.  The fact that network TV and cable suck doesn't make Netflix worth it.  I'm ok with Netflix for now, but they are going to lose a lot of their best content when Disney takes their stuff away and then the price won't be worth it anymore IMO.  If people disagree and want to stick with Netflix, I truly don't care.  Do whatever you want.  All of this is subjective anyway.  Just because I don't like something or I do like something doesn't mean everyone else has to agree with me.

To these and others conjecturing about Disney+ impact, I do think it extends beyond just the removal of Disney product from other sites. It's not just the back catalog and the boost it gets from Hulu in the TV market -- they will be another shop with very deep pockets who will compete for future movie/series/documentaries that will make content that much more evenly distributed across the big services making it that much more competitive. We'll see the extent, but I can't believe it's a zero impact scenario.

one trick pony show
I really liked Sneaky Pete -- I understand the one-trick pony comment and I started to lose interest in the latter part of the second season but the surrounding characters are great in addition to Ribisi, and the storytelling arc was decent (at least on par with Ozarks IMHO).

That's kinda the premise of the whole sneaky Pete show though... He's a con man and hangs with other con men/women a lot of the time... Pulling cons.

Enjoying "Get Shorty" series on Netflix. Chris O'Dowd finally in a role that doesn't annoy the piss out of me. Ray Romano is decent so far. Sean Bridgers is basically reprising his role of Johnny from "Deadwood". The co-host from the Comedy Central show, "Review", is fun this (and you see her topless). Light and easy like a USA Network show but a little better.

My fear is that once everyone is going streaming style cafetiria style, and the cable companies start losing revenue, broadband prices are going to explode.

I’m hoping that since 5G broadband will be a thing, competition will keep Internet prices down.

I enjoyed Outsider quite a bit. It takes place in 1950s Japan and revolves around an American getting mixed up in the criminal underworld.

Wife and I watched the first few episodes of Mindhunter yesterday while both of us were sick.   Very well made, and the concept is very interesting, but it is also Mad Men - level slow.  By saying that it means that it's not the best show for binging, not that we aren't enjoying it.

I'm not as big a fan as others here. While I agree it is well made and with good acting abundant, there are real problems with the show for me. Mostly the lead actor and the pace of the season's storytelling is way too slack. We all seem to dig the subject matter though. I'm keen to learn if they'll make some adjustments with S2. It's got a pretty short leash with me.

Actually enjoyed Polar. Knew it was based on a graphic novel going in, so expected some brainless entertainment, which it was. Cyndee was worth it, too.
I liked it too for silly over the top entertainment. Definitely a lot of gratuitous violence.

As an aside, took me a while before I realized “Vivian” is Lagertha from “Vikings”.

Not sure it's been mentioned but if you like the Oceans 11 format, don't mind subtitles and aren't offended by some boobies try Money Heist

You can do the English dubbed version but yuck. This is a Spanish cerebral thriller. Good acting and several likeable characters. Gets to the point fast, no slow build here.

Very fun, and fast paced. 2 seasons.

Finished the first season of Mrs. Maisel. Started off great, kinda slowed a little at times in the middle but ended strong. I wasn't intending on going right into S2 but probably will now. Shalhoub and Susie the manager are the best parts. Good show.
