I was about to thank you for reminding me. Then I realized it's a month away. Looks like yet another great show from HBO. Please bump this thread next month!
freaking awesome.also east bound and down is starting on the same night.
In smaller groups, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, and director Martin Scorsese have together made some of the best crime films of all time such as Goodfellas, The Godfather Part II, Heat, Raging Bull, Mean Streets and Casino. Well, if the rumors are true, these four Oscar winners might soon be teaming up for one giant mob movie.
Pacino and Pesci are reportedly “circling” a film that De Niro and Scorsese have been preparing for several years called The Irishman.
The Irishman, based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, is about mob hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran who claims to have killed Jimmy Hoffa and many others. Earlier this year, De Niro spoke at the Tribeca Film Festvial about an ambitious idea he and Scorsese had to make the film once they had the time.
We have a more ambitious idea, hopefully, to make it a two-part type of film or two films…It’s an idea that came about from Eric Roth to combine these movies using the footage from ‘Paint Houses’ to do another kind of a [film that is] reminiscent of a kind of ‘8 1/2,’ ‘La Dolce Vita,’ [a] certain kind of biographical, semi-biographical type of Hollywood movie — a director and the actor — based on things Marty and I have experienced and kind of overlapping them.
If that’s the case, Pesci and Pacino could presumable fit in a multitude of difference places with roles either big or small. Of course, it’s all speculation at this point. Plus, don’t forget, Scorsese is currently shooting his 3D family film Hugo Cabret with Chloe Moretz, Jude Law and others and would probably make Silence after that, a story of Jesuits who face danger and persecution as they try to spread Christianity in 17th century Japan. Stars Benicio Del Toro, Daniel Day-Lewis and Gabriel Garcia Bernal are all attached to that project.
So don’t go buying your tickets to The Irishman just yet, it’s still a few years out at least. But just the thought of seeing those three actors together on screen, with Scorsese behind the camera, is enough to get any film fan excited.
Sepinwall had better be all over this.
Lets just hope if this turns out well they won't shut it down because of the high costs like they did with Rome and Deadwood.very good first episode. Some interesting characters and lots of action.
The sets and costumes look awesome. Typical high production values from HBO.

How do you make a cable TV show look like an Oscar-caliber movie? Getting Martin Scorsese to produce the series and direct the pilot doesn’t hurt. But to pack HBO’s new Boardwalk Empire—a gangsters and G-men saga set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City—with authentic period detail, series creator Terence Winter turned to Brainstorm Digital.
The Brooklyn studio specializes in so-called invisible effects—anything from erasing grip equipment to creating photorealistic backgrounds and props from scratch. Its subtle brand of digital fakery puts A-grade production values within reach of “smaller, more story-driven films,” says cofounder Richard Friedlander. The studio’s credits include Frost/Nixon and Synecdoche, New York, but Empire is its first big TV project. Without Brainstorm’s creations, Winters says, “we wouldn’t have had a boardwalk or an empire. It would have been too expensive.”
No period buildings remain along the present-day Atlantic City boardwalk, so the production team built its own 250-foot-long version of the storied Jersey landmark on an empty lot in Brooklyn. Nearly every scene of the pilot required digital augmentation—particularly the exterior shots—from replacing the modern Brooklyn waterfront with miles of New Jersey sun and sand to re-creating a rumrunner’s boat after the real skiff sprang a leak during production and threatened to sink. The result is a rich, detailed vision of the bootlegger’s paradise that’s as intoxicating as bathtub gin.
Liked it.
Did get a little confused at the end about which character went swimming with the fishes (just looked up to see him getting beat to a bloody pulp).

Then why not have characters like Al Carbone or Arnold Rothberg or Lucky Lucialini?Choke said:Because there is a plenty of actual history on Johnson and Winter/Scorsese wanted some leway with beng able to entertain without having the "true story" become an unentertaining burden.McJose said:I liked it but still can't figure out what the deal is with the main character. There really was a guy named Enoch who ran AC's rackets. But his name was Enoch Johnson, not Thompson. I mean they've got Capone, Rothstein, and Luciano but why'd they have to change Johnson's name to Thompson since the charcter is obviously based on him?
I had the same confusion. I'm re-watching it now and realized it's the husband that threw the money back at Nucky in the casino.Liked it.

They said because they are going to have the character do some things that Johnson may not have done or agreed to do or something like that. I'm not sure how historically accurate this show is going to be.I liked the show and story, but I thought some of the acting or characters (particularly Luciano) were a little over the top. Good pilot episode though for sure.McJose said:I liked it but still can't figure out what the deal is with the main character. There really was a guy named Enoch who ran AC's rackets. I guess I'm looking at it a little like "Rome". Not all that historically accurate but they used real historical figures and kept their names (as far as I know). It's not a big deal...I just think it's weird. They said because they are going to have the character do some things that Johnson may not have done or agreed to do or something like that. I agree that it's kind of weird when you're using mostly real people and telling their story . . . but changing the story so much that they alter the main character.I assume that's what happened with Deadwood though too and that show was great. I hope this show doesnt meet that same fate.I guess I'm looking at it a little like "Rome".
