Welcome to the 14th edition of the uber-nerd baseball drafts. The theme for this league will be "first-year" players only, as defined by the WIS draft center.

Player Eligibility: The player must show on the WIS's "first year" search function. Assuming it is not a partial season, you're good to go.

Generally, we do a slow draft on the message board. It usually starts with a clock of about two hours and dwindles its way down to 30 minutes as the draft progresses. We don't have a clock in the evenings, and we don't start the clock early on west coast drafters.ETA: Lists, emails, and cell numbers for texting usually keep it moving pretty swiftly.

Yeah, I actually just added that to the rules. I accidentally left it out. Pretty sure we've always excluded 1885-1893 because it is not considered "modern" baseball. 1894-2010 should be the eligible field of players.

It looks like if you search for a player like Gene Alley, with the min 20 games and "first year", he won't turn up. If you search with that default games played to 0, his '63 season shows.

Also, as an FYI, it won't really be the true first season for some because WIS doesn't include seasons where a player doesn't reach 50 ABs. (for those that don't use WIS for searching for players)

IIRC, it was supposed to be a "rookie year" draft (assumedly a ""MLB-defined rookie year" draft?). That's not the same as a "first year" draft. It was just that it happened that WIS has an auomatic way to search for "first year", but not for "MLB-defined rookie year".It's pretty easy, in Excel, to take the overall list of MLB seasons from WIS, strip out all that fall under 130 ABs (and whatever it is for pitchers), and then run a pivot to establish each player's "MLB rookie year". Then you can vlookup back into your stats table to flag all "MLB rookie years", and cull out the rest.I would be happy to provide to the league a list of players and their "MLB rookie seasons", so that all can research with the same info....The only thing I can't remember is how to get the full batters & pitchers lists from WIS.

Alley wouldn't show on a 20 game minimum search because he only played 17 games. So, yes, if you're wanting make sure you capture all the guys that played under 20 games in their "first season", you'll have to adjust the search accordingly.Great point on the FYI.Did you find a way to accurately sort the "all-rookie" idea? My ears are still open on that, but its probably something where we'd have to provide all member the eligible rookie list before we started.

Yeah, I started to do it a home in Access...essentially I grab all of the first years that have 130+ ABs, then I take the rest and add their ABs to their second year, if that's over 130, I add them, etc.

If Doug and/or Tremont are able to sort through the rookies successfully, we'll make the theme change. That's what the idea was intended to be, we just settled for "First-Year" because of the WIS search function.

Given that we need one more team for 24, we're still missing 10 dice rolls, and we've got DougB and Tre on a research assignment; I'm taking down the Monday start date. That doesn't mean we won't actually start then, but the main goal is to make sure we have all of this squared away first. At worst, we're probably looking at a Tuesday start.

Alternatively, we can scrap MLB's determinations, and just use WIS's first-season search.OR we could make up our own determination. For instance, we could just say something like "first season over 50 ABs for batters, over 10 IP for pitchers". Something like that.

I don't think it would be hard to do the rookie years. Except the 45 day thing. I feel like that's a recent thing though...maybe not.But you're right, we could do any of those things. Part of the appeal for me is to look at real rookie years though.

Who the #### decided on only 100 as a roll? Before I rolled im like, ok, good chance for a tie here. Bunch of freakin' geniuses here.

We should have just added the 7 rolls that most of us did. That would've saved us from ties.

We could just throw all of the unused 7 rolls and then roll to determine which roll a person got.Sorry, I have an addition to dice with these things.
