SNL is Friggin' Horrible! Except when Timberlake is hosting. (2 Viewers)

I guess I'm still bent that Wiig had to have the full regalia for her no talent @zz.
 Funny comment, but when are you going to realize you might in the minority on Wiig.
Really? There were a slew of the same comments in this thread in regards to her.And I have no idea why anyone thinks Seth Meyers will be good for Late Night. He's decent for Weekend Update but he ALWAYS comes off as smug and a bit doouchey. He doesn't quite pull off endearing at all. I'm not looking forward to his stint after Fallon upgrades to the Tonight show.
If Jimmy Fallon can be successful at Late Night despite the show being completely devoid of laughs and Jimmy apparently not possessing the ability to conduct an interview that is either funny or interesting, anyone should be fine for Late Night. I'm thinking at the very least, Seth Meyers will be able to perform a monologue and conduct interviews that will produce some laughs. Seth's show might not have the highs that Fallon can sometimes achieve with his skits/impersonations, but I really can't envision Seth's show being worse than Fallon's on a day-to-day basis.

Fallon's interview skills are lacking...definitely...but I find myself laughing during his show moreso than most other shows. I don't watch him often but when I'm flipping channels late at night and land on his show...I usually end up laughing within moments. The guy just seems to have my kind of humor.

I get that from just about every late night host. I also think Myers plays it up for SNL. I think he'll be fine. His deliveries are pretty good. Obviously interviews will be different b/c SNL he usually just sits there but I'm intrigued to see what he can do. Besides, I hate all the skits that Fallon and Conan do so I don't care for them in that respect

I actually think Fallon is pretty good on late night. He's not a brillant interviewer but he seems to get the guests to have fun and be comfortable.

On SNL, not sure what the consensus is but I am a fan of the porn stars QVC sketch. Affleck almost lost it when Strong went something like "your whole hand".

Last night's show was definitely one of the best of the season--even with Affleck botching lines left and right.

Big fan of Strong...she fascinates me.I cracked up at that line as well.

I thought that was a pretty solid episode...Highlights were Hermes handbags and Xanax for GayWeddings
In other words, the episode sucked.
 Depends on your criteria I prefer episodes that don't have brutal sketches, even if their highs aren't as high
Hermes went on and on and wasn't that amusing. Affleck took a dump on the art of reading. It was bad, you can admit it.
I though it was another solid effort. Lots of laughs, very few down skits (the daughter of the cop was the only one I didn't care for). As usual we skipped the musical guest.

How do you give Wiig a bloated, overbearing sendoff but nothing for Hader...one of the funnier guys on the show in many years.

I know that punk band gig with Armisen was meant to be the goodbye...I just feel like they spent so much energy on saying goodbye to Wiig but let these guys walk out the door with not so much as a "take care".
Wiig had a runaway movie hit and seems destined for more big movies. Armisen is funny, like Portlandia but he has no future movie career, Hader not so much either. They are more TV guys if you ask me, nothing wrong with that but I don't think it is gonna be hard if they want those guys to return and host in a couple years.

There were fewer cringe inducing sketches though IMO

Saw in another review that Affleck was a good choice for this one because as a director now he knows how to let the stars shine, and this episode wasn't about him, but about Hader, Armisen, Sudeikis, etc

Kanye was brutal

I thought the punk band goodbye was perfectly pitched, and they got a pretty awesome group of musicians to come out there

Man, I  Carrie Brownstein
No ####, what the eff was that 1st song?

Absolutely...it's gonna be tough.Maybe Pharoah steps up...but it's weird how little he's used...wonder if he can...

Ugh. I've watched and defended this show for so long....but the times where I chuckle for more than a few seconds are less and less. I know I couldn't write for the show but the writing seems to lack depth. I'll continue to watch every week (love live music and some of the acts are fantastic-didn't care for song 1 of Kanye, liked the 2nd one) but honestly i'm scared that I won't want to continue watching if the quality of comedy drops below the current level. Do me a solid SNL....be funny.

And thanks for TU for naming Carrie...been racking my brain where I recognized her before-she was in a band that opened for Pearl Jam in a show I was at.

Sleater-Kinney

Very divisive opening act amongst PJ fans

Lots of peeps HATED them and hated that they'd usually have to hear Corin Tucker join in with PJ at least once during the show

I love them

Outside of his few impressions, I don't know that he is funny.
Agreed...has to be a reason why he's never in anything. No camera presence maybe.

I don't get it, you constantly hate on the show, then say its going to be tough to replace them. How is it tough to replace something that you already don't find funny? Personally, I think it will be a great opportunity to bring in just about a brand new cast. These guys seem pretty played out and certainly don't seem on their way to the same careers as some of the famous SNL alumni. Now its time to find the next Will Ferrel or Adam Sandler.

What's not to get? I've said it a half dozen times...I'll say it once more for the slow...er, I mean, you...The problem is with the writers and Lorne Michaels.I've never liked Wiig's schtick and always felt like they pandered to her in every skit.Hader is awesome and Sedeikis makes me laugh. Now we're left with Drunk Uncle and the chick with the huge nostrils that does the Russian immigrant bit and the girl with more overbite than a Hungry, Hungry Hippo...Thankfully Strong is hotter than a billy goat's @zz in a pepper patch...but I'm not sure where the laughs are going to come from...I'm hopeful it'll cause them to push the envelope more and get some fresh ideas.

Agreed, guy's been the best cast member for a while imo. The show may become more female oriented now, as at least imo, Cecily Strong and Kate McKinnon are the best 2 remaining cast members, and I think Nasim Pedrad is pretty funny too, though she isn't used very often.

His role on the show reminded me of what Jan Hooks was like twenty years ago. He was talented enough to lead a sketch, but could also play the supporting roles very well without stealing the spotlight from the main performer. It seems that in recent times, a cast member was either one or the other.

Actually hoping he doesn't return. He's horrible outside his impressions.

I actually think this is a very strong female cast, it's just a shame about 0 writing talent. I guess it's all been diluted by the late night talk shows, and SNL's not very competitive salary-wise. Which is why everybody hits the bricks when they get one whiff of Hollywood.

And now the head writer is out! Somehow because of Lorne I don't think that's a good thing.

But yeah Vanessa Bayer, Nassim Pedrad, Strong and Kate McKinnon are all pretty funny chicks and not awful to look at either.

Actually, I think other than his Obama impression, he's terrible at those too. Most of the time, until they tell you who it is he is supposed to be doing an impression of, I have no idea. I'd prefer they give him a shot at some unique characters to see if he's worth keeping around.

Armisen was 100 times better as Obama. Pharoah does an accurate Will Smith and Denzel Washington, but usually it's repetitive and not funny past the first few lines.

Jayrok said:
He does Will Smith and Denzel Washington pretty good. The rest I don't care much for, including Obama.
Will Smith was actually one of the ones I didn't know who he was supposed to be until they said so. All his voices sound exactly the same to me no matter who he's doing. With the exception of Obama, who he has obviously spent a lot of time on.

I think Cecily Strong and Taran Killiam are the only funny remaining cast members now. I could do without the rest of them entirely.

Maybe they should have a sketch comedy competition where viewers and SNL fans vote on the next set of performers. Might be an interesting summer filler show. American idol style but not auditions for thousands of people. Get a cast of 50 or so and narrow it down to a top 10. Let them perform, judge them, and let viewers decide who they want to see on the new SNL cast. I know there was Last Comic Standing, but this would be specifically for sketch comedy and trying to find comedic chemistry between contestants.

Might work or might be a trainwreck. Either way, someone would make money and funny people might get discovered.
Yea, that's just what TV needs, another reality show.

Really hard to figure out how SNL has reached this level of suckitude. Is it just the writing?

Anyone that has seen The Whitest Kids U Know, The Kids in the Hall, Mr. Show or The State knows that sketch comedy can be really funny. And yet, SNL has suffered through a period of 10 to 15 years of mediocrity. So who do we blame? Loren Michaels?

none of those shows had to come up with a new 90 minute show once per week. the show is also nowhere near as bad as people like to say it is. just have to suffer through some bad shows/sketches to find the good stuff, but it's always been that way IMO.

Hey Rud...I challenge you to record yourself watching any new episode and post it.

I think it would be an interesting experiment.

when I stop liking a show, I stop watching it. you guys should maybe consider using your free time more wisely than watching someone watching tv.

People should try watching some of the first episodes from Season 1. The debut show basically was cringe-worthy in its awfulness.

My bad Rud...I just thought you might run with it...all Mystery Science Theater-like, with the camera behind you as you watched. We could then debate about what moments made you laugh."Did he just laugh?" Nah...I think he just coughed."He's chuckling...this is is...THIS is the funny!" Nope...he was just scratching.

Lorne needs to let loose the reigns of the show a bit. Every interview I read/hear from cast members or writers makes the writing process sound so tedious. They still all sit on the floor in his office each week to pitch ideas and it sounds like most people don't offer their best ideas. It seems like this whole clique, kiss ### session that stifles creativity. Nothing cutting edge. Have you seen anything biting about Obama? Who was the last President they didn't seriously lampoon? The show is totally PC now.

The funniest sketch this season was the acupuncture sketch but was it really much different than Dan Akroyd as Julia Child with the blood squirting everywhere?

They had a very talented cast this season, imo. I think the problem is Lorne.

What are the memorable skits post-Will Ferrell? Last 10 years have been rough. I blame Kenan Thompson.
